Could we lose, yes, you can lose any game. But we are as likely win as Nott C if not more. How can a team be seasoned when they have swapped out 28 players. Seasoned in terms of the club, as a collective they will understand this league and how to operate in it, and will do according to their status, budget and ability. We should win, we shouldn’t lose a single game. My expectations are we win this league at a canter, setting the highest points tally ever recorded at this level. That’s my expectation….. Im just not convinced this groups mentality has improved at all, this is nothing about ability, this is about mentality, and that’s what I’m not convinced has changed at all…… Edited 13 August by Pliskin 1

These pair are the two weakest teams by some distance in L1 according to people who know the division better than me Not sure on Notts County with them being newly promoted as they will probably still have some of the momentum with that But there can genuinely be no excuses when we play Burton, most of their best players have left and they have brought in basically no one 1

If this was a factor why do so many relegated teams get promoted back immediately if they're not used to operating at that level. Also Notts county haven't been in this League for 11 years so I'm not sure how you can claim they "understand this league and how to operate in it". Their manager has 4 months experience at League 1 level.
Bablemikey Posted 13 August Posted 13 August I'm really looking forward to it if I'm honest. This is where the campaign starts for real and there's no reason why we shouldn't win. However, I'm expecting this season to be very "interesting" as the club and team go through massive changes. I'm not expecting us to look settled for many months, and I'm sure we'll be looking to further shape the squad in January and indeed the following summer too. Lots of changes, lots of ups and downs, some things that don't work well and some that do. I'm going to try to enjoy the ride and not get too triggered and frustrated in the difficult moments.

L1 and none league is all much of a muchness, I don’t think there’s much difference between the leagues at all, so they’re still better suited to understanding lower league football than we are…. We are still operating with the mentality of a of a premier league club. There’s still for me major red flags with this team, that put us at a massive disadvantage on a league like this, I question whether they have the right mentality and attitude to match the scrappy nature of this league.

Ah come on don't move the goalposts, just admit you had a stinker and didn't realise they haven't played at this level for over a decade 5
Mapperleyfox Posted 13 August Posted 13 August My big concern is RM sticks with the same wasters that got us here in the first place, namely Thomas, Mavididi etc.... Mentally fragile, error prone and in Mavididi's case, he looks for intent and purposes to have thrown the towel in. I hope RM is brave, plays the Bosnian from the start and throws the new players in. Otherwise why have we signed them if they're not ready? Notts will be bang up for it and won't let us have it our own way for sure. 1

However, Jatta has left. Next best player it’s been rumoured wants to leave. Signings have been largely league 2 based including two lads from Harrogate who were relegated down to non league
smallpauldj Posted 13 August Posted 13 August Out of all the sides to be relegated twice in the premier League era. The lowest finish was 7th by Luton. Sunderland lost in the play off final, the other 2 won the league. So I fully expect us to be up there fighting and should be beating these home and away. 2

They’re all much of a muchness, it’s lower league football for which they’ve spent the majority of their existence playing at….. most teams are as bad as each other at this level hence why I don’t think there’s much of a difference between the leagues .
ozvaldo Posted 13 August Posted 13 August Notts ****y 2 - 1 Us Okoli and Luke Thomas will get bullied. Mavididi will sulk for 60 of the 70 minutes he'll play. Cullen will be a ghost. Russell will have immaculate hair.

Fox92 Posted 13 August Posted 13 August Can't people be positive, it's first game of the season ffs. There's been so much negativity, rightly justified, but we've a new manager now and some new players. And we're in a new league (sadly). I'll be going Saturday positively. Can't be arsed constantly reading "oh we're gonna lose" in this thread. If there was anything for it to be based on then fair enough but pre-season is so difficult to read into. 2

From what I've seen of their two strikers against Burnley, Okoli is 5 inches taller than one of them and 7 inches taller than the other one. Let me know! 2

People always use the "bullying" aspect now we've been relegated. I saw people on Reddit talking as if League One was some sort of South American lower league. Been here before and lost 4 games all season and, yeah, things are different but that team then was similar to now in terms of a mixture of youth and experience.

If being able to bully your way through games is so effective why don't these teams just get promoted through the leagues and win the Prem? They'll just bully the other team! I think that is impossible to know at this point as we have had 20+ changes to personnel in the squad, a overhaul of the manager and coaching staff. Add to that we will seen another 4 or 5 changes before the close of the window. 1

They'll just bully the other team! It's always been funny how a passing style of football has always been viewed in England. Was quite funny watching the rise of Pep's Barcelona team and how they haven't played a team as grand as Manchester United etc. before they promptly wiped the floor with them in the UCL final twice. Then when Pep came over here it was all about "yeah but can he do it on a cold wet tuesday in Stoke?!" before he promptly became arguably the best coach to ever manage a team in Britain. Yes there are obvious flaws to playing with the ball. But there are a million upsides to it. I think the average fan only ever watches the player on the ball and this style of play is subsequently largely lost on these people. I'd encourage anyone watching a Russell Martin team to watch the striker, wingers and midfielders when the defenders or goalkeeper has the ball. Watch the movement and see how the game opens up. It was fascinating under Enzo. 3

Would be very interested to see the bloke capable of bullying him and I would question why he's playing football and not in the NFL or high-level Rugby.

Which I can see we are kind of doing, but there’s alot of work left to do, still with the likes of Faes, Okoli, Souttar, Skipp and Mavididi all allegedly leaving….. that’s a lot of players to replace….. granted I know now all of those will leave, but then we will be left with a miserable player claiming a half decent wage doing very little. All of that has a massive impact on the groups mentality!! Edited 13 August by Pliskin
TonyN11 Posted 13 August Posted 13 August Maybe some of our players will have squad numbers before kick-off

LCFCCKEANO Posted 13 August Posted 13 August (edited) Only person bullying Okoli will be himself and his own first touch. If we could guarantee he wouldn’t make mistakes he’d probably be at a far higher level, he has the literal dream build for a centre back Edited 13 August by LCFCCKEANO 2
