Not that it’s the only reason but PSR regulations has forced so many clubs to view youngsters as part of the business model to compete from a spending perspective.
 

Not necessarily talking about us here just sad state of affairs and another example of the premier league ensuring the best talent stays with the elite clubs.

Leicester City’s decision to sell Jeremy Monga to Manchester City, for a fee that could rise to £12.5 million, sent shockwaves through the less well-informed members of the Foxes fan base. The Coventry-born teenager was ultimately prised away by his former boss (technically) Enzo Maresca, who had taken charge at the Etihad.

Whether Maresca had any personal connection to the player to exploit, and whether the price was inflated, remains a question that will likely never be answered. The winger, who had become the second-youngest player in Premier League history when he debuted at just 15, was the first major domino to fall in a summer that would see LCFC's youth pipeline dismantled with alarming speed.

It was not just Monga who was lured to the blue side of Manchester, as Darren Motsi (a highly regarded 15-year-old attacking midfielder who had already featured for Leicester's under-21s) has also seemingly agreed a move to the City Football Academy, despite late interest from Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. Motsi's departure underscores the alarming ease with which the country's biggest entities can now cherry-pick any club's most promising talent.

The allure of elite development pathways proves impossible for talented youngsters to resist. Worse still, the outflow has not been limited to the absolute elite, with sides across the football pyramid capitalising on the East Midlanders' financial vulnerability to snap up elite prospects who might otherwise have developed into first-team figures at King Power Stadium.

Going forward this is going to happen more and more often. We take kids at an early age and then the big 6 choose the best ones at 16 for a pittance. They then send them out on loan a few times and sell them for a huge profit a few years later.
 

Man City have in excess of 200 players across all age groups but only 3 in their senior squad. They have however made £500m in sales of their academy players.

 

The only way the other 86 clubs can protect themselves is to collectively agree not to sign players on loan from the big 6.

 

The fee we got for Monga will be a rarity and in all honesty we might as well close the academy.

Whilst we are developing premier  league players our  loan players should be ready, improved and able to replace them next season.

IF it is happening, I wonder if we might negotiate an immediate loan back. A few clubs have done that sort of deal and I would guess we'd be able to offer a good amount of games played? Better than being in their U21 team - I can't imagine he'll be on the bench at OT.

So if he goes, along with Monga and a couple of others we’ll bank £20.5m plus add ons…..whilst we would like to keep them, that is fantastic business, as both (any) players would want to go to further their careers, surely this is part of an Academy’s role, circa £25 mill in…..and start again? I keep reading criticism of selling youngsters, the academy generally, and the desire to play 4 or 5 youngsters this season…..might be me but suggests we are doing something right…..

Makes business sense selling the youngsters because of the dire situation that the board have put us in. With Louis Page, he has the ability and drive to become something special, and I am upset with selling him cos in a couple of years time he will be worth a hell of a lot more dough. Making a profit is fine, but making a longer investment would be more beneficial. He reminds me of a very young Declan Rice.

The criticism stems from what we have historically done. It's definitely improving but unfortunately, Monga and Page are potentially going to be exceptions. And not because we won't be producing great players but moreso because we're still getting inflated prices because of the fact we were an established prem team (obviously would get a lot more if we were in the prem). Monga maybe different but even though I'm a huge Page fan, it's pretty unlikely we'd be able to get £10m+ based on how much he's played if we're just a run of the mill championship club. 

 

To be fair, we're also having a bit of a 'golden generation' so the test will be whether this continues. Not being one of the best clubs in the country is also going to massively reduce the likelihood of who comes to us. And ultimately it's frustrating that we don't get 2/3 years from these lads which of course increases their market value, but it also helps create a connection with our team again

Personally reminds me nothing of Rice. Very different profile of player; more forward thinking, creative, elegant etc
