Bert Posted 19 December 2007 Posted 19 December 2007 I think our full backs need to be quick, energectic, who can both attack (ability to overlap is essential) and defend, i think Chambers fits the bill perfectly, after seeing the players that have/can play there this season. Stearman (who i used to rate, and in the back of my mind, somewhere, i still believe is good enough at this level - i've seen him do it ) hasn't fulfilled anyone with optimism this season, Bruno is better at centre back, and doesn't have the pace or stamina i don't think, to last 90 minutes every single game. Kenton seems to be playing cameo roles all over the place.Chambers has shown us (Albeit in a different position) energy, enthusiasm, fight for the cause, the willingness to attack and defend and i think it's only fair he get's his chance to show us what he's really about. Kenton and N'Gotty aren't fast enough as full-backs. They'll cope on occasions but basically full-back is a position that requires people of pace. People who can support at speed but who are agile, quick to turn and quick to recover. James Chambers is our one option despite us being labelled Right Back City and, for some reason, he never seems to get the chance. That worries me. Because he must have some weakness that's just not been widely recognised but which prompted Watford to let him go and City not to play him at full-back. Having seen him briefly at right back against Forest in the abandoned game where he stood between us and a mauling, I can only guess that it's not his defending but his final pass that lets him down. But it was flimsy evidence. Truth is Stearman should move. For his own good. He needs a fresh challenge where he can refocus and where they have people good enough to keep developing his game. You only have to look at our team's failings to realise that so much is not being done. I did hit on this earlier on in the thread.
STUHILL Posted 19 December 2007 Posted 19 December 2007 Losing patience with Stearman, should be dropped to the reserves for a long spell or sold in Jan or Summer if we can get decent enough offer for him, maybe 400k. He looked promising when he first broke in to squad but hasn't really shown that since. He makes mistakes on a regular basis. He is not strong or commanding enough to be a Centre back and yet isn't attacking or agile enough to be a full back. For me he is caught between the two and will struggle to ever become either. Therefore, I conclude he should be sold and perhaps play for average League one teams where I think he would find his level, bit like Heath and O'grady have!

Not many League one sides have 400k to chuck about...then not many league one sides would want rodders. We might be stuck with him if we'll only take that amount.
Thracian Posted 19 December 2007 Posted 19 December 2007 I don't underestimate the value of full-backs. I'd love a good, fast, aggressive full-back but sadly I have to make do with Alan Sheehan. Don't aim Sheehan's faults at me. I've recognised that Sheehan lacks pace as well as the next guy. And that he's slow on the turn. And that he doesn't mark tightly enough. I've acknowedged all these things lots of times. The difference between Sheehan and Stearman/Kaebi/Mattock/Clemence etc is that on the plus side he also makes things happen and has been our best single source of goals/near goals this season, including his assists. By far. Free kick specialists can do a vital job. We've not got many specialists in anything in our team and how badly we need some.
Manwell Pablo Posted 19 December 2007 Posted 19 December 2007 Come on Manwell. If Watford had seriously wanted to keep him they'd have offered him a more tempting deal. Obviously they only rated him to a certain degree. Yes, it still doesn't change the fact that he left. You made it sound like they wanted rid, they didn't , they wanted to keep him.

Yeh ok, I personally would let him go much cheaper, maybe 150k in summer if he still hasn't improved. just didn't want to get reaction out of people saying he was worth loads more than that and had interest from Villa and Sunderland not too long ago!
Micky Ruddle Posted 19 December 2007 Posted 19 December 2007 He is awful. Absolutely awful. The girls at our school scream about him. They go to the matches to see him, not the match. What a real waste of money. He is a useless waste of space, who i just wish we could offload in the January Sales. Villa still want to offer £3.+ million for him?
Koke Posted 19 December 2007 Posted 19 December 2007 Perhaps Holloway will be the man to put his career back on track. But at the moment, he's a liability and recognised as such by fans and opponents alike.A lengthy spell in the reserves, away from the firing line, may help him to recover his form and perhaps even become the prospect we once hoped that he would be. I think Bert mentioned it earlier in this thread, but a loan spell could do him the world of good. Maybe to a League One club who's flying, be it Forest or Leeds or Swansea, could get his confidence back. For some reason, I genuinly believe there is a player in him somewhere and its up to Ollie to get the best out of him. And also, him having played under SEVEN different managers ever since he came to the scene has really hammered his development.
The Stig Posted 19 December 2007 Posted 19 December 2007 He has to improve drastically, I personally don't think he will. There is a reason why he has gone from being such a hot prospect, to the player he is now. He either has the wrong attitude, work rate or mentallity. Whatever something has happened to make him go bad, and I'd be surprised if it wasn't his fault.

This is our problem though, we are always waiting on players to improve or 'reach their potential'. We've done it with lots of players before. Where do we draw the line and say enough is enough, you have had your chance, no more excuses, your not good enough, your outa here!!

He knows he needs to shift some out and he knows he needs to bring new in. Lets just hope he gets it right.

Stearman will never be a top class player. He'll go on to be another Jordan Stewart and have a career like that. I do agree with you though, his attitude are questionable sometimes. He looks like he couldn't care less and would rather be elsewhere as long as he's getting his weekly pay check. Again, that's something Ollie will sort out because he will not tolerate that kinda behaviour.

Funny you mention the highlife. Stearman seems to be one of only five or six players in our regular squad who always seems to be fit.

Well after Hull they had their Christmas party in Leeds . Maybe that was on his mind.

We must be in a very good position to call a player who's just been called up for international duty "useless" and "a waste of space" And yes, I know this was written before the Wolves game and today's game.
Bryn Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 Ollie - "Richard Stearman got more of a tongue lashing than anyone after Hull City, and now he look like the player of a couple of years ago" (Paraphrased). Good to hear, hopefully will be good for us for years to come if Ollie has changed his ways.
Flynny Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 What has Ollie done to him? Two great games in a row, fucking hooray. Absolutely delighted with him.

Webbo Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 Really pleased for him, never thought he was as bad as people said, top drawer today.
Jack Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 One of the best players on the pitch today. Very good solid performance and was good going forward aswell.
davieG Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 Although rather fortunate to not get 2 yellow cards early on for unnecessarly rash tackles
