Manwell Pablo Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 Seeing as he's seasons over I was just wondering what peoples thoughts on it were. For me he was probable the most exciting signing made over the summer, I thought we'd finally found the answer to our midfield problems. Obviously theres no debating he's been a bit of a let down. I wont says he's been poor, more inconsistant, he's had his poor games, games where he and the rest of our midfield have failed to grab the game by the scruff of the neck, but occasionally he's played quite well and getting a battering on here for no good reason. Then theres the Thracianology. Most assists at the club, Highest scoreing midfielder at the club, 4th highes amount of shots (although what thats suppose to prove I don't know) I think if you stick some decent players around him he could be very usefull next season.
davieG Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 Disappointing, but I guess you could say that for many of the new players DJ, Oakley, Howard etc, etc. Given that Stearman, who's had a very mixed season rock bottom to fan's favourite looks a good bet for player of the season in amongst all these big signings paints a pretty good picture of our all around mediocrity.

Not really, Howard and DJ have been about as poor as I expected them to be.
davieG Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 Not really, Howard and DJ have been about as poor as I expected them to be. I was thinking more re their supposed value, Aren't their goals to game ratio with us is significantly less than last byear as well?
Manwell Pablo Posted 21 April 2008 Author Posted 21 April 2008 I was thinking more re their supposed value, Aren't their goals to game ratio with us is significantly less than last byear as well? ....hmmm Howard yes but then It's just one season, he's been around the football league for years and gone seasons without doing much, he's old, he was never going to walk into a team like this and start banging in goals. He's only been here half a season. Campbell on the other hand has only ever been prolific in the Southern Gas Wankstains NonLeague Division six.
brookfox Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 He's just not lived up to expectations has he? First few games I thought we'd found the answer, but as the season has progrssed (and niggling injuries set in) he's not raised his game. As Captain I also don't feel he leads the team. I'm also not sure exactly what sort of midfielder he is; attacking or defensive. Which kind of makes it difficult to find an ideal partner - with Weso we're not creative enough but with Oakley we look prone to being overrun. In summary, I have no idea!
Ric Flair Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 Not been that bad. He's had some very good games for us, but I expected more. He's not the inspirational type I thought and hoped he'd be, but perhaps that was an over expectation just because he's been a captain elsewhere. I expected him to be a bit of a Hendrie type player who got the players and crowd going when needed, but he seems to lack the ability to be a leader IMO. I think if he stays he'll be better next season, and if we play a more passing style of football then he'll come in to a league of his own as he's assured on the ball in the right environment. I still cannot believe we have Lee Hendrie (ok, only on loan), Matt Oakley and Stephen Clemence in the centre of midfield, plus Wesolowski and yet we're still not dominating teams in the middle of the park. That has got to change next season surely with hopefull those 4.

Hahahahaha, classic As for Clemence, he's had some great games, and some mediocre games, more mediocre than great. But there are so many factors that have made it so difficult for not just Clemence, but practically the whole team, to hit their stride. As for the captain comments, i think he's the most vocal of all our players (excluding loanees). Kisnorbo and Oakley, the two stand in's, i dont think i've ever heard or seen them say a word on the pitch, unless its Kisnorbo having a go at the referee.
Daggers Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 A couple of blinding games but not a "captain". Totally failed to take the team by the scruff of the neck and lead them. Another season like this and he'll be getting people on his back, vocally...if he manages to keep fit that is I wanted Clem to be excellent...but his end of year report is a disappointing D+ with a comment about "must do better" and "needs to make more effort".

D+ is about right, he and others just haven't lived up to there price tags!!!
Trav Le Bleu Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 I agree with all you say Manwell. Plus I would add that due to injury, Clemence hasn't really had a run out with the "better" midfield that we have acquired in the last third of the season (oakley and hendrie). When we can get those three plus A N Other regularly playing together I feel very confident we would be a good team (Hell, we are a good team - playing very very below par)
Chimp Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 AFAIK, Clemence has been struggling with an injury to his ankle which needs an operation. The last time he played for us (Suncthorpe?) he had to have a pain killer injection before the match. He's due to have an operation as soon as the season closes, so, maybe, hopefully, we'll see an improvement next season?
Kilworthfox Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 Clemence has not lived up to expectations, however the stick he gets is 100% unjustified. Remember Forest away? We would not have had one of the best moments this season if he had not been a major part of that side

We would not have had one of the best moments this season if he had not been a major part of that side But people do remember that - and how he destroyed Covs midfield at home...but then what about the times when he simply lubed himself up and bent over?

Geo V Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 He has been a disappointment thus far. He played in a successful team last season and was getting rave reviews doing the holding role whilst Brum had some quality attacking players in the side who gave him less work to do. To be voted player of the season by fellow team members that include the likes of Larrson, Mcsheffery, Jerome, Bentdner and Muamba must have been a huge lift as was being named fans player of the season. He came to us and more was put on his shoulders and he simply hasn't coped despite a decent start when he formed a good partnership with Weso. I think Clem needs quality around him and we simply haven't got enough. He will never be the playmaking midfielder that some hope he will be but in the right set-up he can be very effective but I cant see him being too exciting in this side.
MPH Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 Disappointing, but I guess you could say that for many of the new players DJ, Oakley, Howard etc, etc. Given that Stearman, who's had a very mixed season rock bottom to fan's favourite looks a good bet for player of the season in amongst all these big signings paints a pretty good picture of our all around mediocrity. slighty off topic, but do you think that Players who have left the club can be voted player of the season? *cough* Fulop *cough*
SamL Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 I must admit he's been very disappointing this season but he's struggled with his fitness which could be a contributing factor to his downfall. But lets face it, he's not the only player to be disappointing this season. I'd like to see him around next season but definitely not as captain.
Flynny Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 To me he looked like the kind of player that'd be good in a good team but wasn't always going to put the graft in. When he has he's looked a good buy but occasionally he's shocking. Though I was calling for him to be dropped a fair bit before he was, I'd have him in the team over Oakley at the minute in a shot.
Aeropars Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 He has been disapointing but i dont see that he could drag the team on his own either. Lets not forget, our total creativity has been pretty non existant and when your team is not making the runs, not playing well and not scoring I think that can make even the best player look totally average. Its all about ballance and when its off, the whole team looks off.
Ultra Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 I wouldn't be too sorry to see him leave. In overall terms he hasn't really delivered any more than Williams or Hughes did before him.
i luv u foxes Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 to be fair most of the players here this season have been mediocre and at times has stood out compared to others he will be important next season aslong as we stay up stearman player of the season
James. Posted 21 April 2008 Posted 21 April 2008 Though I was calling for him to be dropped a fair bit before he was, I'd have him in the team over Oakley at the minute in a shot. I'd be inclined to agree but it's just such a shame that a comment like that is even said. I think Ric was saying the same earlier but a midfield of Hendrie, Clemence, Oakley and Bell really should take the piss in this league.
