Having worked for Royal Mail - I’m not surprised at the reports of management being abject in this case.

It is one of the worst run organisations I’ve ever been a part of - which is a shame because I did quite like the job itself (before they started messing about with how to do it).

The usual suspects, for accusing NASA of politicising the plight of two astronauts.

Slander scientists and engineers with more integrity than you'll ever have again, cvnts.

JD Vance.

No further elaboration required.

If the GOP nominate Vance on the back of a recession and stock market turmoil caused by an administration he was front and centre of, it will be a landslide Democrat victory of biblical proportions.

Americans today vote for two things- a charismatic 'box office' candidate and someone they trust to protect the dollars in their wallet. JD Vance would be neither.

Assuming the next election is free, fair and legit.

Is Trump going to give enough of a shit to try to rig it? I'd argue that elections are much, much harder to rig than people realise owing to the multitude of voting systems from state to state and the sheer numbers of people and interests involved even then.

He ran to keep himself out of prison this time round, will be 82 (if still alive) by the time the next election rolls around and the chances of Musk still being part of the administration and not having had a huge fallout or decline in influence are about as strong as RVN winning Manager of the Month.

There might be one more mad MAGA election with a candidate who can't sustain the cultist fervour, a comfortable Democrat victory and thereafter a return to something resembling normality. Difficult to imagine MAGA surviving the retirement or otherwise of the man it was explicitly built to venerate.

Rigged directly? Probably not.

Through voter suppression, capture of the legal system overseeing the election and skilled use of social media manipulation? That, I believe, is possible.

He'll want a legacy, and given he and his ethos really "should" have been a memory after 2021, then I believe underestimating it and the damage it can cause at our extreme peril.

The SCOTUS and legal system has pretty much told Trump to **** off on anything regarding the 2020 election, so it's probably a bit of an exaggeration to say he has them in his pocket. They'll more or less do what he likes on social issues, and Trump v Anderson was a bizarre judgement, but on democracy? It's tricky to see the GOP successfully getting them to overturn a legitimate defeat.

Voter suppression is a stronger possibility, yes, but the sheer scale needed would have to be enormous if the next four years continue as they've started.

In terms of social media, this is the biggest concern for me. The Democrats just don't seem as willing to play dirty like MAGA. They still seem to be playing by the pre-Trump rules of making attacks too polite.

I do think that, in 2028, most of the swing voters will want 'normal' politics back after what looks set to be an inept, erratic and unprofessional presidency but the Dems would be wise to have a bit more bite on the ticket to balance it out. They went for two fundamentally decent, polite and amenable people in Harris and Walz. Go for the skilled, polished communicator as nominee in someone like Buttigieg and a more aggressive, no shits given pitbull as his running mate.

I honestly think that pretty much anything Trump does short of full on invasion of another country/legislative coup/other completely beyond the pale thing can be spun as a success to enough people, combined with successful voter suppression, to carry almost any election henceforth. Look at the way the current economic woe is being spun, and that is the usual hottest button Issue. And look at how what was functionally a coup attempt on January 6th 2021 is being spun now.

That being said, four years, to say nothing of more, is a long time and I hope that I'm wrong.

While Trump has certainly managed to keep his base loyal through clever narrative manipulation, it’s hard to see that lasting forever. As people become more aware of his tactics and voter suppression efforts, it’ll be tougher for him to maintain that grip. Plus, there’s only so much chaos and instability voters are willing to put up with before they want something more stable and normal. The GOP can’t rely on Trump’s personality forever either—his influence will eventually fade, and the party’s internal divisions could open the door for something new. The political system, though messy, has ways of pushing back against prolonged dominance.

I believed that a while ago. Now I'm not so sure. Reasonable people believe that such systems can last forever, but history shows quite clearly how oppressive regimes can take control in so many places - usually after people have sworn it could never happen.

But you could be right. I really hope that you are. For the sake of our species itself.
