Independent Supporters Association's Lance Tomlyn backing Leicester City's ticket-pricing structure

Monday, June 22, 2009, 08:00 Lance Tomlyn believes Leicester City are starting to realise the true worth of their season-ticket holders.

Tomlyn, chairman of the Independent Supporters Association, has in the past been a harsh critic of discounted offers for matches at the Walkers Stadium, which he said devalued his ticket.

But, although he regretted last week's price hike for match-day tickets, he believes it adds value to the £322 he has paid up-front to watch City in action next season.

Tickets go up by £2 for an adult ticket for most of City's games, and by £4 for six higher-profile games.

Tomlyn said: "These 'platinum' matches certainly add value to my season ticket."

He will be paying £14 to watch the clash with Newcastle in January – while the cheapest 'platinum' seat for the same match will be £27.

"It's down to individual choice but clearly there is a lot of benefit to being a season-ticket holder, and I'm glad the club are at last looking after our interests as a priority," he said.

Tomlyn also welcomed an additional £1 discount for club members which means that a Kop seat for the majority of games will be the same price as last season. The club have has also decided to continue offering a selected amount of £20 'Just the Ticket' adult seats in a section of the West Stand for 'gold' games.

The price will rise to £25 for 'platinum' matches.

A club spokesman said the tickets will be limited to 250 supporters and the sale of tickets will be policed to prevent them falling into the hands of touts.

He said: "One of the things our staff will be entrusted with will be to ensure against a person buying up 50 tickets and then selling them for a higher price outside the ground."

City have also rolled out a scheme where students aged over 12 will be able to purchase cheaper tickets.

South Leicestershire College is entering into a community partnership with City and deputy principal Matt Pinches said: "It is refreshing to see a football club willing to invest in their current and future supporter bases and we are delighted to be able to offer our students a £2 discount this coming season. We are looking forward to the season with optimism and I am sure that our students will get behind Nigel Pearson and his team and give them their support."

Disabled supporters will also be able to claim a free ticket for their carers for all home games.

City's Carling Cup tie at Macclesfield will be played on Wednesday, August 12 (7.45pm). It will be City's first visit to Moss Rose for a competitive match.

This generated a big response including this from Lance:

To all those who have commented on this article I apologise for the way my comments have been put across by the Mercury. Unfortunately I don't get a chance to see what is going to be published before it goes to press and to be honest I cringed when I read what was being said on my behalf. I did say the season ticket holders would be happy that the diffential between match day prices and season ticket prices was being maintained but this has been blown up to become the main part of the article. I also said a lot of other things like I didn't think the prices should have been increased in these hard times etc etc but unfortunately this was not included!! My apologise to anyone who was upset by my comments. Up the City, Lance Lance Tomlyn, Northampton commented on 22-Jun-2009 13:23

Brilliant, what we always knew was confirmed by their own source! :S

Bit cheeky by the Merc, innit?

Somebody should tell them, both the paper and the club (Hoos), to stop pulling the wool over the fans' eyes. Not only is this one move here pretty embarrassing for both institutions, it adds even more discredit to the biggest regional newspaper in terms of sports coverage and it's pretty much quite an insult to the fan groups and the individual fan as well.

Shot in the own foot. Brilliant.

Things will change with the staff. They'll have to. Blanderson off... Who's next?

Trouble is Blanderson's now on Mandaric's payroll so is probably feeding this tripe to the Merc.

I wonder if Blanderson's come across Mandaric's receipt at the Walkers for the £25 mill he spent buying LCFC? :P

I'm not sure who, if anyone, else has experienced this but I've had exactly the same situation when the Merc published a few lines of a letter that I submitted to their fans views' section a couple of years back.

I can't remember the exact wording, but they took my words and paraphrased a line in order to create a completely different meaning. The way they re-worded what I'd written made me out to be making a completely rediculous suggestion. I had written in making a point about the way the team was performing and they changed it into a rant about wanting to change the colour of the kit. I remember getting bloody ripped big time at college (I was at school at the time) as everyone had read the comments... Much in a similar vein to the reaction Lance appears to be having to endure.

You would expect this kind of thing from gutter press; the likes of the Star and the Sun but when it comes from your local paper it's pretty damn pathetic.

Last time I'll be buying a mercury for some considerable time to come.

So what we suspected has now been confirmed, that you can't even believe the fans' comments in the local rag, in case it has been completely and utterly misrepresented and printed out of context.

Nice one Merc.

Don't see what Lance is whinging about. He's experienced enough to know how the Mockery operates.

But at least a few fans are questioning his status.

Is anyone on here a member of LCISA? Has it undertaken any activity in the last decade?

I don't think it's the Mockery, It's this Steve Pumphrey bloke in general. I've mentioned a few times about his love for using brackets in the most patronising way in his articles but since he took the top job he keeps using the phrase "A source close to the player" or "A source close to the club said". Just like with all the redtops, there is no source, it's his opinion put into quote marks.

They should have given the job to Graham Melton or a similar safe pair of hands not some scruffy nobody with a couple of years of journo experience under his belt.

I really wonder what the limit is for ticket pricing you know, in many years to come they will be charging £100 just to get in I bet, thats if they continue this obsceneness.

Its a newspaper FFS. They try to make 'news' out of nothing. Of course they are going to misquote to make it more interesting and hopefully now Lance 'Whothe****areyou' Tomlyn of Northants should have learnt his lesson.

Who cares?

The Mercury editor, who is apparently a reader of Foxestalk.

If he sees this, I hope he steers well clear of Lance in the future (and Cliff Ginnetta as well, for that matter..)

...but they haven't made it more interesting, the article is boring as fook. Probably would have been much more interesting if they'd focused on him having a pop at them for raising the prices in the recession. They did it to brown nose the club, not to make it more newsworthy.

Isn't £3000 for a season ticket at the Arse (they do have a 40,000 waiting list) and £92 for some match tickets? :dunno::blink::S

What would happen if they upset the club? Maybe the club would not give them access to the players, manager, owner and chief exec. What would they print then? They are hardly going to rock the boat over a rise in ticket prices. They certainly played safe with the whole La Manga thing in terms of keeping the relationship going.

A paper needs news to fill its pages. The club a are regular source of 'news' to fill those pages. Why rock the boat?

Speaking as a dad who buy's his lads season ticket.......if we lose a few games they'll be discounts in the Merc.Swings and roundabouts. ^_^

Typical local journalism really. No appreciation of context, just cherry-picking the words of their interviewee/source to fit the story they want to put out. What really irks me though is the Mockery's persistent contention of 'Lance/Cliff said it = this is what the fans think'. It's just so lazy.

But in a one-club city where sport news runs dry over the summer, this is par for the course. The club rely on the local media to present them in a fair light, and the media need the club for stories. It's the same with Radio Leicester - never will you hear a word against the club.
