Tommeh Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 If he does sign I'd put a decent wager that Baggies at home will sell out.
Koke Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 What do people really expect from him? Davids is a 36-year-old has-been that hasn't played competitive football for close to 18 months now. How is he going to flourish in a team that plays hoofball like we do? He's not a 'legend' at all. He was a decent high-level player in his heyday but nothing special. Just because he wears those glasses everyone thinks that this man has some sort of special power. A decent player in his heyday? Are you having a laugh? He was a world class midfielder in his prime, and one of the most iconic players in his generations. Zidane once said that Davids was the best midfielder he had ever played alongside. Calling him a "decent player in heyday" is a bit disrespectful and also just plain false.
maddog Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 I honestly dont know if I'll be able to handle him not signing now.I think I'll turn to drugs if i'm totally honest.
Guest Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 I can't make WBA at home, if this goes through I'll be narked if he gets his debut then
Raj Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 I just wanted to state on the record that I don't like it so when it all goes wrong I can be smug and self righteous. I too would like it on record that when it doesnt happen i can say "told you so"

What I mean by high-level is champions league/international standard. In my opinion, Davids was not a stand-out player at champions league/international level. He was good but never stand out in my opinion. Plus the argument is a bit redundant because we're talking about a time long long ago, he wouldn't be a shadow of the player he was, he's not played for about 18 months.
martyn Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 Have to laugh at the comparisons with Paul Dickov getting worse with age, Davids is a slightly different proposition. Could be a masterstroke or a disaster, hopefully he'll do a Prosinecki and tear it up.
TrickyTrev Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 If Davids were on, 20k a week, 40k every fortnight. He'd only need to bring in an extra 2,000 fans at £20 for us to cut even on the deal. Is it that implausible that there would be 32k there for his debut and a couple of games after that. That would be 30 thousand extra people at £20, £600,000. If we stick to the 20k a week figure that is 30 weeks wages, or about the length of a contract between now and June. Financially, I'd say there is not much to lose. Problem is, he's not known for his promotion of squad harmony, so money isn't the only thing that we should worry about losing!

Calling him a "decent player in heyday" is a bit disrespectful and also just plain false. It was class watching him for Barca the couple of times I saw him. A young Ronaldinho would do a trick or two and then the wiley old veteran Edgar Davids would object to being upstaged and try something himself. Implying that he was ever "average" is just daft. The only thing that bothers me about it really isn't so much his 18 months out but the fact he was a bit unimpressive at Tottenham.
Ozwin Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 Howard/Wellens/Brown/Clemence/Oakley wouldn't stand for his shit if he were to try it.

You're falsely assuming the club make 100% profit on every ticket sold, though.

I agree that it'd probably be a shit idea overall all things considered, but something inside me just wants this deal to go through. I just would love to see him in a Leicester shirt. My heart is over-ruling my brain.
Babylon Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 but the fact he was a bit unimpressive at Tottenham. Who wasn't at the time he was there!!
thybluefox Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 Yeah unimpressive in a premiership side. Surely, he'd be more than a competent chapionship player?!

Bluefoxtim Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 Ahhh god. I've convinced myself that he will be signing for us now. If he doesn't, I think I will literally cry. Come On Eddddddyyyy!
Houdini Logic Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 At least Mandaric is wasting his time going through his high-profile phonebook, rather than trying to sell the club...
flanimal Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 After Yann Kermorgant, surely? Well, obviously not even Davids can match the genius of the Kermo. One thing I wonder about, is what role they want Davids to play? Wellens is a kind of Davids player (not saying they are on the same level, just that they play a similar role), King is doing OK lately as a defensive midfielder. Oakley is now playing as RM. Are they just thinking about Davids as a squad player? £20,000 is a lot for a player to sit on a bench. As much as I love Davids, I can only think of one example of an aging legend doing well at City, and that's Les Ferdinand. All the others I can think of were pretty crap.
keithweller Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 You're falsely assuming the club make 100% profit on every ticket sold, though. well, hes assuming they make 20 quid on a ticket isnt he? as the cheapest ticket is 25 quid i believe.

Stan Collymore?
TrickyTrev Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 You're falsely assuming the club make 100% profit on every ticket sold, though. Surely we pretty much would. Fixed costs of hosting the match are there either way. Slight increase in admin, i.e one or two people on minimum wage at the ticket office in during the week and that is it.
Babylon Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 Has anyone got Thracians number, I think someone should call him and check he's ok. He hasn't been on since the news broke that we definitely are after him, i'm concerned he's self harming.
Finnegan Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 well, hes assuming they make 20 quid on a ticket isnt he? as the cheapest ticket is 25 quid i believe. It's still spurious maths unless he actually has any knowledge of balancing the books at a major sporting club.
Finnegan Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 Thought he could only join us in January? As far as I know he doesn't have a club at all at the moment. We don't have such strict registration windows in England like they do in Germany and Italy so theoretically you can sign uncontracted players outside of the transfer window. If FM is to be believed there are deadlines for free transfers but I don't know specifically how that works and it's usually much, much later in the season.
