Sly Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 As I'm currently a free agent available to the highest bidder, I was wondering how far other people generally travel on a daily basis to actually get to work? I have an interview next week for a job that'd give me about a 140 no direct route mile round trip every day. Multimap reckons it'll take me about 1 hour and 30 minutes each way. This does concern me somewhat as I'm not sure if I'm really up for that on a daily basis! I could just be a fussy bugger! Do other people do this? .... and how do you find it if you do? Obviously, the bloke has told the company will compensate me in some fashion for the distance if I'm right for them and their right for me!

At first it will take it's toll, but you get used to it. Saying that I would love to work locally!! I get no compensation or allowance, so your quite lucky!!
Trav Le Bleu Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 Work is less than a mile away, 5 mins in a car (cos it's an indirect route and traffic lights) or 15 mins on foot! It would have to be an absolutely stunning job to get me to do a 3 hour commute! Having said all that, it can take 40 mins just to get from the outskirts of Leicester to the City Centre in the rush houe sometimes. It's been a long time since I had a job that was both City Centre based and 9 to 5, so I've avoided rush hour traffic for a good long time!
Hitesh Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 Around 15 minutes walk to work which isn't bad. But I am in a company flat so its not too bad, otherwise it would be 2.5 hours door to door and I'm not doing that 5 times a week!
hairy Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 Under 3 miles of mainly dual carriageway. If it takes me longer than 7 minutes I get roadrage
Wilkesy Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 About 9 miles from the outskirts into the city centre. Usually takes around 30mins each way but as i work 9-5 then this can differ, like the other night which took over an hour to get home! It might be an idea to find out if and where any potential traffic might be on your route as multi map won't take that into account.
Guest Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 Takes me 1h 10mins to get from my house to my work across the other side of London on the tube, doesn't really fuss me and I work some god awful hours.
Sir Fynwy Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 Currently travel 12 miles (about 20 mins) to work, looking forward to starting to work from home in january saving 5,000miles/year and giving me 30 mins extra in bed each morning (and no need to get dressed before starting work). When I was South East Sales rep I often commuted 2 hours each way to Kent to start my day, horrendous!
Houdini Logic Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 Working from home today - alarm went off at 8.55am, slippers on, laptop on, cup of tea...
AoWW Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 Live about 30 miles from work - mostly on twisty back roads though so it takes about 45 mins. Not too bad - just annoying in bad weather. I've often had jobs where I've had to drive a fair way to get to them. My general rule is that if it's under an hour each way then it's do-able on a long-term basis. Any further than that and I'd only take the job on if I felt I could move closer to work in the not-too-distant future.
jonthefox Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 About 10 miles for me. The trouble is, is i have to cross just about every major route into leicester. Most days its ok, but others can take over an hour.
lou Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 Normally 6 miles and 20 mins away but currently having to commute to Solihull most days about 40 miles and 40 mins each way. I dont mind it so much its just the M6 that pisses me off but if I leave at 7ish the traffics not too bad - I could live with it to be honest. A jobs a job these days
MC Prussian Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 I do commute to work on a daily basis, Monday through Friday. About an hour each way by public transportation (or a 35-mile stretch). And as The Singh's already mentioned, you get used to it with time. I've gotten used to sleeping or drowsing whilst being on the train. Talking about being proactive.
Guest Posted 10 February 2010 Posted 10 February 2010 I used to work the other side of Leicester, and it could take over an hour to get home at times! Then I worked on the right side of Cov, and it took me 25-30 mins. Currently studying in Nottingham; for a 9am lecture, I have to leave the house at 6.15am yet a 9.30am means I can leave an hour later!
ozleicester Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 Currently live 1 mile from work, takes 4 minutes in the car. (very angry if it goes over 5 mins, by the way have to take the car as im in and out during the day) Was working 75kms ( 50 miles??) for the past 7 months, would take me 1hour and 15 minutes each way on a super freeway. good... You get time to plan your day. You get to listen to either the news or the latest music You can work from the car with bluetooth etc. The longer the drive.. the easier it is to make up time if your running late Driving home gives you time to wind down and get into family mode a good drive can be quite relaxing Bad You will come to realise that you will never get those 10+ hours a week back. The mobile phone means you start work the minute you hit the car. longer on the road.. greater chance of accident If your paying, huge impact on car costs generally means less time with family if you have training, or other evening activities it can make getting to them difficult Every minute you work past your usual finish time.. seems to be twice as bad.
Alexikokopops Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 At the moment it takes me about 40-45 minutes along dual carriageway and the M3. Depending on how things go in the next six months it could change to 20 minutes door to door via the Tube. That would be delightful.

Head Honcho Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 8 miles and half an hour on a good day. 8 miles 2 hours on a bad. Bloody M4
Wycombe Fox Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 On my way to Measham via London. 6 hours there, 1 hour meeting, 6 hours back. Bummer!

Any longer and actively consider not taking the job or moving or finding a room locally to live in off and on during the week.
Basingstoke Fox Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 Usually takes me about 10 minutes to get to work, depending on the traffic lights on one roundabout. Used to have to leave at 8-8.10 for a 9am start. Now I leave at just after 8.40. Love it. If I have a 7am start then the roads are clear so getting to work is nice and easy.
Sly Posted 23 February 2010 Author Posted 23 February 2010 I rejcted this job yesterday. I found out that what google was telling me was a 1 hour 20 minute trip was actually close to 2 hours, so a 4 hour round trip. Fully off!
AoWW Posted 23 February 2010 Posted 23 February 2010 That's a shame, but I can't say I blame you. 4 hours of travelling every day would be far from fun.
