Stade Rennes and/or Marseille could overtake them with one game in hand, though. Meanwhile, AC Arles-Avignon (with that particular Breton amongst their ranks) continue to linger in last place - worst league record for total points in Europe thus far? Didn't Montpellier do something like that last season?

Yeah, but I wouldn't classify them as a typical "small" and rather unknown team like Brest is. Montpellier HSC used to be one of the better and more renowned sides in French football (and only returned to old days in recent seasons).

Just two teams challenging for the title, unlike the two in the premiership (when was the last time someone other than chelsea or man utd won the title) or just the one in serie a (inter have won something like 6-7 successive titles - real open league that is)

Granted Chelsea and Man Utd usually come out on top but it usually goes down to the last ten games of the season before they start to pull away from the others. Wheras there is already a seven point gap between 2nd and 3rd in La Liga. As for Serie A, Inter have only really dominated in the last few seasons and when they have, there's always been competition from Juventus, AC, Lazio and in the past Roma. Having a quick glance at Serie A current standings it looks wide open.

Barca and Real are untouchable just about, no teams in La Liga will get close to them in this year and in years to come.
