Van Aanholt Overrated?

So he didn't play particularly great today.....

He's been good since he arrived.

Some people need to chill out a bit

He's had a bad couple of games but he's clearly a class act, you had only to see his performance at Derby to see the potential. He has that vital commodity of pace, is good on the ball and is great bombing forward. I have doubts about his tackling though, weirdly he might make a better left winger than left-back, much like Gareth Bale, but he's plenty good enough at this level.

On paper, he looked ideal but he's not impressed me at all. I'd said he's what we are going to keep simply on the grounds of his pace. Such a shame about Cunningham who similarly had poor games but he was humble and tried his heart out every game.

He clearly has quality and potential. Didn't have the best game today but one day soon he will rip someone to shreds with motm performance and everyone will be singing a different song.

I think we all wish Cunningham hadn't got injured though.

From what I've seen he's competent defensively, pretty good at going forward.

Berner is probably a better defender, but as good going forward? I'm not so sure.

Final ball was lacking today but he attacked well and got to the byline on a number of occasions. Gally should have tucked one away after a great run by PVA. Couple of balls like that and some of the knobs on here would be calling for him to be man of the match.

The final ball let him down, on another day it would be a different story. Chill. Out.

It was either him or Dyer who couldnt put a ****ing cross into the box in the last ten minutes.

Stick me on Sven, i'll put a half decent cross across the face of goal in the dying minutes instead of firing it about 60 feet over everyone and out for a goal kick.

He's seems a decent player, but he's not had the best start for us. Derby he was very good, not much since. Because he's been billed as the new Ashley Cole, I think everyone expected a lot more of him than we were ever going to get. I think if he'd have come from a team at a lower level, and he wasn't being compared to the best left back of the generation, we'd probably be giving him a bit more of a chance to prove he has what it takes to cut it at this level.

I was told yesterday that during the half term signing session he commented out loud that he was bored and wanted to leave, which was heard by everyone in the queue with their kids. sounds like he has a right big time charlie way about him and IMO this sums up the way he plays he thinks he is better and more important than anyone else.

Having seen pva on a few occasions now, I think that he is poor defensively, he certainly was at fault for Coventry's goal yesterday.

He is what I would call a winger trying to be a modern attacking full back.

He makes some poor defensive decisions, sometimes his pace saves him, others like yesterday when he was on his arse nowhere near his man or the ball are going to get punished at this level of football.

The new Cole...........:crylaugh:

...................................................................

Two things I don't like PVA

1. Over rated.

2 Over here.

This is (GOOD) PVA

This is (BAD) PVA

...and yet twice yesterday he came close to winning the game for us, firstly with his quick reaction to the goalie spilling the ball where he was very unlucky not to score and secondly with a well place/paced cross into the box which would have been easier to score from than miss.

Don't think he's any better than Kerrea Gilbert who's now plying his trade in the MLS, in fact in many respects he's a lot worse than Gilbert.

His amazing speed & mobility gets him out of a few holes (that his lack of footballing brain & defensive awareness creates) I can't see the difference between him & someone like Aaron Lennon playing fullback

I don't think he has a future at the back, he's been vastly hyped by his mate Ashley Cole and is nowhere near the same player, sure he's young & will develop, but there doesn't look like he has the foundations, all he has is speed.

I think he could work in a back 5 where the fullbacks play further forward, in fact I wish Sven would try it, particularly away from home, you have the extra body at the back when you're under pressure, but when you're on the front foot you have more people attacking & only 3 at the back, although Sven's plan b is just changing personnel & not change the system which hasn't been a great success away from home.

Goalie

Bamba - Bruma - Mee

Naughton ------------------------------ Van Aanholt

Has a much more attacking look about it, & with the extra body at the back we may even, one day, keep a clean sheet, it will also play to PVA's strengths of being better going forward (although his crossing is wasteful so that's open to debate)

The title of this thread needs changing.

It needs changing to "Alan Rodgers, overrated?"

It then wouldn't contain a load of nonsense and would get straight to the point.

The answer being, no he isn't. He's terrible.

The End.

he spent alot of his time on his mobile.. even when he signed my kids book he did it sitting back rather than on the table as he was in the middle of a text or something.. shame really as all the others came across chuffed to bits to be doing it.. bamba was chatting with my youngest and was very pleasant.. kingy was great, so humble..

was bamba with the first attempt...

god knows how dyer missed the 2nd one.. at the time i actually thought it was too much pace on it from pva but was dyer who fluffed it..

As mentioned, the chance on the post was Bamba.

But he did provide Gallagher with an easier chance in the first half than the one he skied himself, which people are only berating because Naughton pulled off a wonderhit with his 'wrong' foot. Fact is King was horribly placed to take the ball and shoot and PVA was right to belt it. He didn't hit the target, it happens. Had we won the game and waded in chances and not been thwarted for almost the entire second half, few would have criticised PVA, but would have praised him for even getting into that position.

I'm already getting tired of defending him (I think he was adequate and no worse than any of the others bar Naughton), when e.g. King had a meek shot straight at the goalie when well placed first half, and likewise had an awfully heavy touch when virtually put through by Wellens first half again. And he's our top scorer, our supposed killer instinct in the box, who floundered and thus offered jack all.

One thing is sure, he's a far better option than Berner is considering the way we play.

Hey, numb nuts. This is a forum, everyone is entitled to their opinion. And I think he's been useless.

On the basis of what ive seen of him so far, he is vastly overrated.

I dont think he defends particularly well, his positional sense is nothing special.

His decision making is poor, defensively and going forward. Woefully inept decision today to go to ground in the tackle..... doesnt seem to understand when to tackle, when to stand, and when to push his attacker wide of the goal....clearly today he should have been pushing the cov winger wide of the goal, trying to stop the cross.

Going forward, he is wasteful. Sometimes he wont show for the ball at all going forward. Other times he will shoot from bizarre positions, no final ball quality or delivery of any kind........where is this explosive pace were told about? show it by bombing on past Gally and offering width each time, as youd be expected to do at Chelsea ala Cole.

Stringer on Monday night said he thought a fit Cunningham would have been a better choice in the side.

I dont want to make scapegoats, i dont want to jump on any bandwagons, i just think SO FAR, the hype has been misplaced.

In other words better off with Bruno but Sven prefers people he acquires his self. He was badlly at fault for the Coventry goal and together with the Yak vastly overrated

Posted

His crossing was way is pacey (when his crosses actually are going in the box) yesterday and most of his crosses were mostly going over for a goal kick. His shooting is as worse as his crossing at times and i thought yesterday's performance was his worst since signing on loan. Bruno for certainly next week please Sven.
