Kent Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 At the end of the day, Sven sees Waggy every day in training and he has had game time. Maybe not a run of 2 or 3 starts but it looks like he doesn't rate him as a prolific goalscorer and tbh neither do I. I do think over the course of a season he would get goals but I can't see him being a stand-out striker in the league which is what we will need if we want auto-promo (which lets face it, is a must as far as Sven's concerned).
ROB-THE-BLUE Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 Maynard is a proven Championship forward and you doubt he can step up. But you would keep waggy who is far from proven at this level. You really think Waggy can step up nxt year? Why do so many have love affairs on here with players that show PASSSHHHUUUUUN but really are not good enough or really proven. ?? I was gonna say the same thing, I think we're just so used to seeing and 'bigging up' mediocre players over the last few years

I doubt he can but its all in the seeing is believing, we thought the same of another player a few years back....and look how that turned out. If we want to get up this year I'd rather spend a wedge on someone else....but meh. As for Waggy, I'd rather try he out that just throw him on the scrapper, i dont care if hes got passion or not, just dont throw him away without trying him more imo

We need tried and trusted players in that have consistently performed at this level or higher in the past. So far we've done that and I suspect we will follow suit with a striker.
thybluefox Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 Ignoring last season because I do think there was mitigating circumstances, Waghorn scored 12 goals in 43 appearances the season before... around 1 in 4 Maynard's run rate is around 1 in 2 (in a much worse team than we were under Pearson, in Waggy's good season)... this puts him on a par with Yakubu's run rate, but he puts in 10 times the work Snap him up I say, I'd prefer Waggy not to be the make-weight as I believe we'll need the strength in depth, but if that's what enables us to get him, then so be it (unfortunately) If Waggy was scoring 1 in 2 then we wouldn't be looking anywhere This, exactly.

The Year Of The Fox Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 Regardless of opinions I think its unfair to judge waghorn using last seasons statistics. Fair enough if it was 43 games he played under pearson and only producing 12 goals. Thats not enough, but some of those goals (qpr at home) were of real quality! If you want to talk about last season, then we all know under sven he wasn't given a brilliant opportunity, and under sousa he was mainly out of position. He still contributed without scoring in a couple of games- I cant remember which without watching the season review dvd again. He's better than many make out IMO. If sven doesn't want him then fair enough. I just think it'd be a shame to let a good prospect go, whilst losing 4m and in return getting a striker who may prove to be a gamble what with his injuries etc. If Waghorn played 30 full games last season and had still only scored 5 then i'd be agreeing with the majority.
jonw88 Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 Now, I like Martyn Waghorn. And I also like Nicky Maynard. But which one's better? There's only one way to find out........

So 12 in 43 in div 1 is not enough but some qaulity strikes you state. and people think he can step up. Yet Most claimed CMS could not do it here and he scored 30ish in div 1. Blind love cos he runs around a lot. Get rid Sven do the deal.

FrankieADZ Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 You care to name someone else ?? if we're spending £5million on Maynard then...why not we go the whole hog and bid for that Jeffren from Barca..reported £5mil price tag on him I cant think of anyone else but if u think £5mil id good value the so be it, if it was reasonable like £3 then for sure...get him but 5 is silly monies
The Year Of The Fox Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 I like him because of how good he looked in his 1st season. Not because he runs around a lot

FrankieADZ Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 £3!!!! That would be a bargain well cheaper than £5 alot im sure if we could con BCFC in some way...

Babylon Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 A cake baking competition! Waghorn would make a passhun fruit cake.
Kent Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 Surely by the end of this week this will be sorted one way or the other. I hope so anyway...
lestajigs Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 Surely by the end of this week this will be sorted one way or the other. I hope so anyway... I think that's been said for the last 5 weeks!!! I'd Put £20 on it won't be
fryatt 12 Posted 26 July 2011 Posted 26 July 2011 I am quite angry at sven becuse he's offering Martyn Waghorn plus £4.5 million for Nicky Maynard. I think he is a good player but that is a bit too much.

I'm quite angry every time I come into this thread hoping to see a source that isn't the newspapers reporting on what they've read in this thread, which itself was un-sourced (that I can see without reading through 99.9% drivel again) Yes I realise it's my fault for coming in here, but I'm desperate for news
