Leicester City are primed to make a second bid to prise Nicky Maynard away from Bristol City if the striker tells the Robins he wants to go.

City have already had one bid for the 24-year-old rejected and Bristol have been quick to publicly state they do not wish to sell their record signing.

However, Maynard is set to hold talks with Bristol boss Keith Millen when they return for pre-season training next Friday.

If Maynard indicates he wishes to leave Ashton Gate, the Robins are unlikely to stand in his way and City will move quickly with a second bid.

Maynard, who signed for Bristol three years ago in a club-record £2.25million move from Crewe Alexandra, has only a year left on his contract and could leave on a free transfer next summer if Bristol decide to block a move this year.

And if they decide to keep him until the January transfer window, they will get significantly less than they would if they sold now.

City's initial bid is reported to have been between £2.5 and £3m.

Other clubs are also monitoring Maynard's situation and are waiting in the wings. Nottingham Forest were said to be preparing a £4m bid but Bristol have so far received only the one bid, from City. Southampton have also made inquiries.

Bristol are still hopeful Maynard will sign a new contract and Millen said: "The speculation has certainly heated up, but he's back from holiday next week and I'll be looking to speak with him.

"Our stance is we still want him to sign a new contract, the board are strong and sticking to that."

Meanwhile, City should find out whether they will complete the signing of goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel next week.

City are holding talks with the 24-year-old Dane after Leeds United accepted their offer earlier this week, but it is still not certain he will join.

Former England striker David Nugent has not made a decision on where his future lies. City have offered him a contract and he is weighing it up with other offers.

Matt Derbyshire remains another option and talks with the former Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City striker have taken place.

City are also in for Preston North End defender Sean St Ledger and have inquired about Peterborough United striker Craig Mackail-Smith.

Other potential deals are for North Korea striker Jong Tae-Se and South Africa defender Tsepo Masilela.

Your chairman said the same thing, and then changed his statement on the club website a few hours later from "we don't" to "we don't wish".

If the player wants out he'll be gone end of story.

Wow doesn't the mighty Bristol City have legions of fans that you can share your views with? It seems strange how many times you're on this forum.

He's just saying what a manager trying to hold on to his prized asset should say and for what the fans want to hear.

Your club is owned, as are most, by business men. There may come a time when the offer from any club may make it sensible to sell. Can you say that point as been reached for a player with a year to go on his contract? Neither you, nor any of us know what the real offer is. Millen surely doesn't want to let Maynard go but he doesn't make the final decision does he?

exactly! cue the we showed extreme determination and effort to keep Nicky at the club, but he made it clear blah blah blah to good to turn down for the club etc etc

Just a little example for our Bristol City contributors of how these things can go........

A Liverpool spokesman insisted that no deal would be done, however.

"The player is not for sale," the spokesman said. "Chelsea have made a bid for Fernando which has been turned down."

Torres has never intimated he wants to leave Anfield, despite a huge amount of speculation when he returned in August as a World Cup winner.

The rest is history

This situation is completely pointless speculating about unilateral he gets back from his holiday. It really is that simple at the moment.

I know the situation, and the only way we're getting him is if he says he wants to leave. Or bid £5 million.

Any updates Bert?

Read the arcticle, he's not back from holiday until next week and they possibly won't be speaking him 'til Friday.

Likely we won't hear anything for a week. I'm sure there'll be plenty that think this is dead by tomorrow though.

Doesn't sound like his agent is on holiday and surely he's the one working under instructions (and advising) his client of the situation. Can't see Maynard seeing out his final 12 months of his current contract as a reoccurrance of the knee injury could leave him very vunerable. Clearly he'll sign the best contract that his agent can generate and I would think that would be with us unless a PL club gets involved (and they've not shown an interest so far that we know). If he declines the offer of a contract extension with his current club then Sexstone will be forced to accept the highest bid (assuming personal terms are agreed).

I think the penny might have eventually dropped in Bristol that most modern players have no loyalty to anyone other than themselves and the transfer fee will be nothing like they dreamed of.

I'm not really debating any of the points you made. Only the fact that it's been reported that he is on holiday and business will be more progressive when he returns. Why people think it's a players obligation to instantly decide on their future when the club they support is interested is beyond me. They're on holiday, just like millions of other people will be this summer.
