Shows huge disrespect to the family of the dead man to go around burning stuff and stealing from shops.

And on that subject, if you are drug dealer carrying a handgun and you shoot at a policeman FFs it is no surprise if they shoot back. Wankers.

It seems to me that this rioting has nothing at all to do with the shooting or any protest against it which was taking place peacefully it's just an excuse to indulge in some serious vandalism, violence and stealing because it makes some 'little people' feel big and clever and we'll all pay for it.

something must have spurred them into it

The heavy handedness of a force with low ethical and moral standards. :dunno:

They may or may not be true but the rioting and looting had nothing to do with that it's just an excuse.

Absolutely spot on mate.

A few, around 30 were protesting and a load of low life's jumped on the bandwagon and turned it into something based upon mindless violence and theft.

However we do all need to look at the society we live in and just how it seems to create so many young people with absolutely no respect, care or bother for anyone or anything.

It's frightening.

A report from the Guardian.

The violence broke out at dusk after about 120 people marched on Tottenham police station to express anger over the death of Duggan. The protesters had begun their march in the Broadwater Farm area, the scene of riots in 1985 in which a police constable, Keith Blakelock, was killed by attackers wielding knives and machetes.

A family friend of Duggan, who gave her name as Nikki, said that the dead man's friends and relatives had organised the protest to demand "justice for the family".

"They're making their presence known because people are not happy," she said. "This guy was not violent. Yes, he was involved in things, but he was not an aggressive person."

It was revealed on Saturday that Duggan had been shot in an exchange of fire after the police's Trident unit, which deals with gun crime, stopped the vehicle he was travelling in. A police officer was said to have escaped injury in the shootout when a bullet lodged in his radio.

If reports are true (and despite the Menezes incident, I've no reason to believe they aren't as media outlets aren't going to swallow the police line without this time checking), it appears Mr Duggan was carrying a firearm. Well if you carry something like that, I feel happier knowing that you will meet armed police. We need to know if he resisted arrest or complied, which an investigation will determine, but it appears there was an exchange of gunfire, appearing to suggest that Mr Duggan was not compliant. If that's the case, then the original protestors/rioters who were after "justice" for his death, were in actual fact after revenge, leading to many innocent people suffering.

Agreed, there's also an element that would refuse to believe the police even if they came around to their houses to explain over a cup of tea.

The trouble is that the focus is on one event causing the riot and not the constant harassment that people deal with via police on a daily basis. They are venting their anger for all the things that happen in their lives and this shooting of an armed criminal was just the spark rather than the cause. Quite frankly the press are seldom innocent bystanders and if they reported things properly then maybe the tensions in such areas would not be allowed to continue.

Can I also add the Police to themselves no favours in the respect stakes by fining people for doing 33mph in a 30mph zone etc.

From the BBC article...

A friend of Mr Duggan, who gave her name as Niki, 53, said marchers had wanted "justice for the family" and "something had to be done".

and destroying other people's property, who had nothing to do with what happened, achieves what exactly?

Oh, and I'm loving the way people didn't get Zin's joke.

If the residents will happily burn the property of their own, that is no surprise is it.

Looks to me like the rioting was down to the amount of gang culture that has been going on down in that area for a while now, and the protest was just an excuse to point their anger/violence towards the police.

The met didn't exactly help the situation by not speaking to the protests outside the station all day, when it looks like its obviously a touchy subject now the IPCC have got involved. However, the guy who was shot just happen to be known to police for being a gang member and drug dealer in the area and the fact that he was shooting at police, doesn't exactly give the impression he wanted to be stopped and searched!

Its a disgrace that what was a general protest turned into such a terrible scene...and the looters and rioters are clear scumbags who hopefully will get a taste of their own medicine.
