Are you trying to say the best British comedies are the old ones?

bottom is my personal fave from the list but its not the best and not the cleverest. makes me laugh though.

A couple I liked (I wouldn't count as the best though) were Game on and Red Dwarf. Green wing I liked too and took me a while but got into the mighty boosh. But the office would probably get my vote.

For me my favourite is Only fools and horses, just can't beat it and it never gets old.

Also love Some Mothers Do Ave Em and One Foot in the Grave which I was absolutely obssesed with growing up as a kid I watched it that much!

It would be stupid to suggest that there's no good comedy shows being made now, but I have to agree the levels are nothing like they were in the past.

And just to clarify my views on "The Inbetweeners" - if a program where the "funniest" moments are a few juvenile gags about wanking and embarrassing situations at college is the "Best British Comedy Series" then I must be living in a strange world...

Comedy now is nothing compared to what it was in the past.

Agree, there's still some quality out there but not as much as in the past at all. Think there's more focus on stand-up and shows like Have I Got News For You.

My top 3:

Fawlty Towers

Blackadder

Likely Lads

But when we say past what do we mean? Are we talking 60s/70s/80s or does early 00s count in that too.

Because the 00s for me, had all the best UK comedies.

The Office

Extras

The Thick Of It

Peep Show

Black Books

Also the late 90s had Alan Partridge, Father Ted.

From that list Fawlty Towers is STILL funny, but yes, all those series are ancient.

No mention of Mary Whitehouse Show, or Father Ted or one of my great favourites, TMWRNJ. (Sundays have never been the same :( )

The IT Crowd and Garth Merenghi's Dark Place would be stand outs for me in recent years.

I really don't get the popularity of Fools and Horses. The jokes are so blatantly obvious I can sit through an episode I haven't seen and tell you what characters are going to say 2-3 lines in advance.

Partridge, Peep Show, Spaced, Early Doors, Still Game, The Fast Show, Garth Marenghi, The Mighty Boosh....

Partridge or Marenghi would take the crown for me, but Early Doors is genuinely one the most well written, under rated comedies this country has ever created.

For me it's between Only Fools and Horses, Allo Allo, Blackadder and i'm throwing a new one in the mix that i dare say i'll be headbutted for, but Goodnight Sweetheart. Bloody love it! :D

Wrong thread, this is about comedies.

maybe everyone is too scared of offending anyone

Thats what it is. People would complain about some of the things that were included in past comedy programs.

Bollockssss

Thats exactly what most of the new comedy programs are.

If you would care to place the bridge of your nose in front of my forehead for a sec...

That's rubbish, if anything it's gone the opposite way.

Too far in Frankie Boyle's case.

I find old comedies pretty safe by today's standards, very obvious jokes and most of those on the list just bore me.

I'm 19 and I'd say it's difficult to choose between Allo, Allo, Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, Dad's Army and Blackadder.

Probably Allo, Allo...

I salute you.

Early doors was brilliant. It was a shame they only made 2 series of it. Might actually go and watch the boxset now.

Yeah it was good, the coppers were absolute genius.

Only fools and Horses for me, dont think you ever get a show which can be that funny over that period of time again. Absolutely brilliant.

Open all hours is a strong contender, but it has to be Morecambe and Wise for me - and I'm a little surprised I'm the only one so far? I assume it's been a majority of younger posters voting so far?
