broughtonblue Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Worries the feck out of me 2 or 3 times every game. Would like to see Mills/St ledger given a few games together
shailen Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 What a lot of people dont realise is that if he just hoofs the ball up, whos the target man? We dont have howard up there anymore, and in the system we play now the players are more fluid to swap positions with each other and cover one another. If bamba did just boot the ball, he would be giving the opposition possession back and they can start to attack more easily....i rate bamba as a defender, and playing it out from the back is just the way we play. If you look at how swansea played last season, we are trying to emulate that.
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 He's been our player of the year so far undoubtedly. The guy has so much class and even if you just watch him battling for the ball he rarely comes out of it without the ball. Whoever said he's not a great defender I'd have to disagree with that. Look at what you want from a centre half: Can he win headers? Yes Can he tackle? Yes Is he commanding? Yes Can he pass? Yes Is he fast? Fast enough yes Is he composed? Extremely I know sometime's he can be a bit too lax, he nearly got caught out today and should have put it in the stand soon after, but the amount of times he keeps possession for us with his composure and ability on the ball is incredible. Just think, if he put it in the stand every time then that's him giving possession back to the opposition every time. If he can win it and show the composure to bring it out and give it to a Leicester player we still have the ball. And you can't score without the ball. I love watching him, and I'm willing to accept he may cost us a couple of goals a season if he gets caught out, but he'll save us a hell of a lot more, score a few at corners and keep us the ball. Mills cost £5million, is half the player and has already cost us a few goals this year. Keep doing your thing Sol!

Keep doing your thing Sol! agree entirely, mills at present is making a few mistake's and needs to sort out what ever his problem is whilst bamba is a good centre half and a force up front when he is up there, maybe if we can't get a striker put ledger on with mills and sol up front whilst nugent is injured.
Jobyfox Posted 28 August 2011 Posted 28 August 2011 Worries the feck out of me 2 or 3 times every game. Would like to see Mills/St ledger given a few games together Advocating dropping Bamba honestly makes me wonder if you watch the same game as me. Bamba is a solid defender, but he's also a footballer. Yes he does get caught in possession every now and again, but the positives far outweigh the negatives. Mills has been caught out much more than Bamba and it's probably unfair to judge St. Ledger on one performance but, at the moment, it's one game and one match losing error. As someone pointed out I'd rather have Bamba play his way out from the back than have Mills hoof it up to a solitary striker who's also a midget.

As someone pointed out I'd rather have Bamba play his way out from the back than have Mills hoof it up to a solitary striker who's also a midget. Very well put. Bamba is too casual at times and the particular incident today was ridiculously close to costing us but importantly as the post above says his positives far outweigh his negatives. It's also worth nothing that Mills' use of the ball is poor, and when you have almost zero aerial presence, someone like Mills who hoofs the ball or gives it away can prove very wasteful. In defence of St Ledger I would like to say I think his costly error against Bristol has clouded the judgement of some. Granted it was a big error, but apart from that he had a decent game and against Bury he was the better of the centre back pairing for me not only in his defensive duties, but as part of a team that likes to pass the ball and play proper football. He isn't scared of keeping possession of the ball and occasionally moved forward with it, taking it up the pitch and helping to start a driving move forward, as opposed to Mills.
Vlad the Fox Posted 28 August 2011 Posted 28 August 2011 It's the way he plays so I'm afraid we've got to get used to it. Though he scares the crap out of us sometimes he keeps getting away with it which is more than just luck. Apart from being commanding in the air he is also good on the ground, not too many get past him with the ball. As for Mills give him time. There is no doubt that he is a quality defender, maybe the expectation from the fans and his price tag is a bit of a burden for him at the moment. I personally thought he had a steady if unspectacular game today against tough opposition.
Corky Posted 28 August 2011 Posted 28 August 2011 He looks like he'll lose the ball when he takes on players but unlike Mills he's kept opposition strikers under control so far.
accessory Posted 28 August 2011 Posted 28 August 2011 He looks like he'll lose the ball when he takes on players but unlike Mills he's kept opposition strikers under control so far. The two key words. Wait until he's been up against Mackail-Smith or Earnshaw. Then we'll see if the Bamba love-in's still going.

Kitchandro Posted 28 August 2011 Posted 28 August 2011 They are both 2 extremes - Mills looks so uncomfortable and Bamba far too comfortable. In fairness Bamba was incredible in the first 2 games and against Madrid, Mills has looked a donkey overall so far and I'd argue his only half-decent performance was Coventry. £5m is looking ridiculous now. Need Tunchev back and arguably another one because we don't look good enough at the back to me.

Even against Cov I highlighted how Mills seemed to be slack with his marking and favour the long punt over the short ball every time. Reading have sold us an easilty replaceable cog in their machine for £5million and are laughing their way to the bank now that that cog is being exposed as half as valuable as what we paid. They've plugged the gap instantly and we're left with an under-confident, over-rated, never-worth- £5milliom-in-a-million-years bawler whose value is being made to look more absurd considering the guy next to him cost 250k. But many people seem to think because we paid so much he must be good. Get Tunch back and pair him with Bamba asap. There you'll have a skilled, composed, secure centre back pairing to take on the rest of the league....

Towards the end of the Southampton game he put in some great blocks which possible saved us. 5m probably is a bit too steep, but honestly in the championship 5m is too much for any defender. Bamba has picked up a lot from last season and yes does look the much better signing out of the two, but this could work in time i just hope that they click properly sooner rather than later. Curious as to what will happen when Tunch comes back. By his form, he SHOULD play, but who knows what sven will do!
woznotwos Posted 29 August 2011 Posted 29 August 2011 i would lay off mills abit he just needs abit of confidents he was great at reading give him time to settle then he will become good this

Spot on, totally agree, half decent performance at Cov which will be our easiest away win all season, given that they had two 30 yard efforts on goal and Bamba took on Jutkiewicz or whatever his name is. He's already been dropped, and then St Ledger equally comes in with a car crash of a performance, Tunchev back plus a loan deal preferably Mr Vitor.
Thracian Posted 29 August 2011 Posted 29 August 2011 I don't feel comfortable with him at all, and I don't think he is that good. He isn't dominating in the air for me, and I hate it when he doesn't launch the ball when required. He wouldn't have to launch the ball if he controlled it properly in the first place. During this week's "dribble" I don't think the ball was ever within a metre of him. With the number of times he stuck out a leg, I thought it was an in-game exercise programme to stretch his hamstrings! . Great value though!
Wymsey Posted 29 August 2011 Posted 29 August 2011 Agree, he can be a liability and gives us panic attacks when he dribbles the ball out of our box, but I love it when he dribbles it from his area to just outside the oppositions' box (whenever he does)despite the number of attempts the other team try to tackle him.
Guest Col city fan Posted 30 August 2011 Posted 30 August 2011 I love sol... He's the sort of player we need if we are having to graft out a win in a play off final... I'd rather have him in the tent spitting out, than out the tent spitting in.. So to speak The thing that worries me about the bamba/mills pairing is the number of goals we are conceding by not picking up runners from set peices... But this should improve the more they play together
Corky Posted 30 August 2011 Posted 30 August 2011 The two key words. Wait until he's been up against Mackail-Smith or Earnshaw. Then we'll see if the Bamba love-in's still going. He coped pretty well with Maynard.
The Doctor Posted 30 August 2011 Posted 30 August 2011 He's been our best defender this season but I'm sorry, he doesn't look at all comfortable with the ball at his feet. He just doesn't. And that is very worrying for a professional footballer... - utter tosh, if anything Bamba is too comfortable with the ball at his feet.
themotivator Posted 30 August 2011 Posted 30 August 2011 if you feel uncomfortable when sol skins the shit out of each championship opponent we face then you need to grow some nuts. he has been heroic this season. apart from the bits when he cocks it up but luckily this seems to be occurring much less frequently than last year.
k3!th59 Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 this I agree. I remember when one of our legends signed from wigan in the 80s. To start with he was woeful to say the least. Red cards a regularity, and was going nowhere fast. But he grew in confidence throughout a glittering career to be arguably our greatest ever defender (and striker).. His name? Steve Walsh. Matt Mills can come good with confidence and our support.
