Steve McClaren may quit Nottingham Forest after less than three months• McClaren said to be frustrated at Forest's lack of signings

• 'He is going away to reflect on things,' says source

The Nottingham Forest manager, Steve McClaren, is said to think his squad is not capable of wining promotion. Steve McClaren could be ready to walk out on Nottingham Forest over frustration at a lack of signings in the transfer window, according to reports last night.

In an echo of his predecessor Billy Davies's frustration with the board, the former England manager believes he is not being given sufficient backing to have a realistic chance of promotion with the Championship club. "He is disappointed and frustrated at the lack of further additions, as he thinks he is short of what is required to take the club to promotion," a source close to McClaren is reported as saying. "He is going away for a few days to reflect on things."

When the transfer window closed, Forest had spent £2m on Ishmael Miller and Jonathan Greening against nine players who had left. They signed three players on free transfers: George Boateng, Matt Derbyshire and Andy Reid.

McClaren is said to have returned to his family home in the north-east to consider his future. The former England manager could only watch on frustratedly as Sven-Goran Eriksson, the manager of promotion rivals Leicester City, and Sam Allardyce of West Ham were able to strengthen their squads over the summer.

"Steve came here in the hope of taking Forest up and was working on that basis," another source was quoted as saying. "But he has always said that the squad needed bolstering in order to do that." Forest lie 18th in the Championship and McClaren is said to have been questioning the ambition of the owner, Nigel Doughty, less than three months into the job.

McClaren had wanted to sign Ashkan Dejagah, a winger whom he managed at Wolfsburg, and moves for Max Gradel, who left Leeds United for St Etienne, and Wayne Routledge, who joined Swansea City from Newcastle United, also fell through. Doughty, a venture capitalist who has an estimated £130m fortune, has invested £70m in the club during his 11 years as owner.

:crylaugh: Would laugh if he left already.

Next time he takes a job maybe he should be less gullible and arrogant and take heed from a fellow Manager, who had already wasted his time overachieving with them.

Soon to be seen talking like a Dutch porno star on Sky Sports.

Surprised he didn't realise how the board rarely let any manager have any money to make transfers especially after billy davies mentioned it so many times, the forest board certainly dont do themselves any favours. I thought it was very odd they got rid of davies he had done remarkably well.

Their chairman/co-chairman has been banging on about the new fair play rules that are supposedly coming in next season and is saying that currently forest are the only team anywhere near to being 'self sufficient' on his twitter account.

He was getting slammed by forest fans on wednesday night. One fan gave quite a valid point though to which i dont think he gave a reply....

'if we are the only club in the league abiding by these rules that havent even been implemented yet, do you really think that the regulators will dock points & fine EVERY other team in the league? No, neither do i'

Schteve should have known better.

Don't like McLaren. Anyway, its the board's fault, why sack a very talented and good manager in Billy Davies who led them to two play off semi-finals after steering them away from relegation?

They have given more money to McLaren than they did Davies but McLaren's signings are not anything on Billy Davies' signings, probably with Greening being an exceptiion who I'd take at Leicester. It also looked as if Lewis McGugan (probably their best player) was playing wide left against Leicester at the City Ground. He'll never have an impact in that position.

McLaren... lol

Steve McClaren's representatives are in talks with Nottingham Forest to discuss his future at the City Ground, BBC Radio 5 live understands.

McClaren, who took over from Billy Davies in June, is understood to be disappointed at a lack of transfer activity at the club.

The Championship side have signed five players this summer, and have only confirmed a spend of £1.8m in total.

No new deals were completed on the final day of the transfer window.

Ishmael Miller (£1.2m) and Jonathan Greening (£600,000) were the only 'paid' transfers disclosed

"McClaren's adviser Colin Gordon is believed to be talking to Forest chairman Nigel Doughty and the chief executive Mark Arthur to broker a compromise," BBC Radio 5 live's Pat Murphy said.

"He's understood to be dismayed at the lack of activity in the transfer market, having spent just £2m since taking over in June.

"McClaren warned last weekend that the next few days leading up to the transfer deadline would determine Forest's immediate future and Wednesday passed without even a loan signing.

"Forest are training today, with no first-team game tomorrow, so McClaren has the weekend to decide if he stays at the City Ground."

Media Speculation

Posted on: Fri 02 Sep 2011

Nottingham Forest have confirmed today that they will be making no comment on the considerable media speculation surrounding the future of manager Steve McClaren.

I think that statement means he is gone or going.

Neither party has made any effort to deny the speculation given the opportunity.

MON likes a lot of autonomy in the transfer market so that would appear to rule him out. Tough times for the noisy neighbour.
