Prized possessions

I was going through a few items I had stored in my closet this morning, and realized that I've got a few things that I feel carry so much importance that I'd never give them away--not unless it was some extreme circumstance, anyway.

So, I figured I'd start a thread where I suppose we could share what we've got that has a lot of personal value attached to it, and why that's so. I'm talking about sentimental value, of course--obviously not ridiculously-materialistically-valuable things.

I'll start:

(in no particular order)

- A book: 'Kleenex, Liliput: Das Tagebuch der Gitarristin Marlene Marder'

Marlene Marder was the guitarist for a Swiss post-punk outfit called Kleenex at first, but later they changed their name to LiLiPUT. I listen to a lot of alt rock from 1978-1983, and they're one of my favorite groups from that era. That book is long out of print, but I asked Marlene few years ago if she had any extra copies, and sure enough, she did. Marlene was kind enough to sign the inside cover: "To Jordan, all the best, Marlene Marder." Most of it is written in German, besides zine articles and album/gig reviews from the UK. But I've got it mostly just to have it.

- A football shirt: The Leicester City 2007/08 home shirt, signed by Ian Holloway and the entire squad

Yes, this keepsake has the ignominious distinction of being signed by the only Leicester City team to be relegated out of the 2nd tier of English football. However, as a gift from the club itself, this item is especially dear to me.

- A letter: Addressed to me, from President Bill Clinton

I was quite active in Amnesty International as a high school student, and was president of my school's AI chapter for two years. Anybody familiar with AI knows that Amnesty members write a lot of letters to government officials. Bill Clinton was president during my high school years, and I'd only written one letter to The White House (about humanitarian concerns stemming from NATO actions in the Kosovo War). Since The White House receives a ridiculous amount of letters every day--and had received many about this issue, I'm sure--I wasn't expecting a response (just wanted to be "one of many"). So, I was quite surprised to find a letter in my mail box a few months later from The White House addressed to me containing a reply in a brief letter to me from President Clinton. On The White House letterhead, hand-signed and everything. I still think NATO screwed up a few things, but fair play, it was a solid response. Thanks, Bill.

-A stuffed dog

Shut up. I let my little brothers have it when they were babies, and now I let my mom keep it at her place. Anyway, my ophthalmologist gave it to me when I was 4 and in the hospital after an eye surgery. One of exam devices had a picture of a puppy on which the patient had to focus, and that puppy became a mascot of sorts for his office (hence the stuffed dog).

-A jacket: Blue vinyl gold trim, and on the back it says in gold print:

DAILY NEWS

KODAK

MATH OLYMPICS

1992 CHAMPION

Hell yeah, I won that. Every 4th-grader (9/10 years old) in the New York City public schools had to answer the Math Olympics questions, and I was one of the 32 district champions. One spring day in class, the principal's secretary announced over the loudspeaker that I had to go to the principal's office. When that happened, there was always an anxious murmur in the classrooms because it mean either that someone was in a lot of trouble, or someone had to go home ASAP because there's a family emergency.

I had no idea what was going on--I was a well-behaved kid. Fortunately, the principal (nice fellow) shook my hand and told me I'd won, and that I was invited to a reception in Manhattan where I'd get my awards and stuff. When I got back to the classroom, the lesson stopped because everybody had to know what happened. So, I told them I'd won, and the class went crazy--all the other kids picked me up and carried me around the classroom, chanting my name, sang, "We are the Champions" and stuff. Of course, my teacher understood the significance of my epic win and allowed my classmates to celebrate.

One of the prizes I received at the awards banquet was that jacket. Its size? Adult medium. What kind of 9-year-old is gonna fit in an adult medium? Worse yet, my mom wrote my name in the back of the jacket. 1) That's embarrassing enough as it is, 2) I wasn't going to be able to wear it for a few years anyway and 3) Even if I had worn it, everybody would have known it was mine, anyway. I mean, who the fvck else in my school would have a 1992 Math Olympics Champion jacket?

But to be fair it is a sweet jacket. Oh, and it fits me today, so while it usually stays hanging in my closet, every now and then I rock it if I want to hipster it up. It's also the exact style of jacket that the New York Golden Gloves (the famous amateur boxing tournament, also sponsored by the NY Daily News) winners received in the '80s and early '90s, so people always think it's a Golden Gloves jacket at first glance. It isn't, but it's equally as awesome. ;)

All LCFC stuff tbh:

Matty Fryatt signed shorts

Paddy McCarthy's Training top

Squad of that season with Rob kelly, signed my programme, (at the last game of the season v Soton (A) 2v0 L)

Sven signed my ST last year

I feel the most important ones are my programmes.....all stored up in a box mostly dating around recent times. Although i dont really get them anymore (except away games) got some dating back in the 70's from my Uncle)

:scarf:

All LCFC stuff including shirts, programmes with autographs, scarves. Most of all though, pictures taken with Muzzy Izzet and Darren Eadie (separate).

Non-LCFC stuff - laptop and phone especially. Pictures of where I've been and experiences I've had are the main reasons why they make it a 'prized possession'.

Family pictures, too. They're the most sentimental.

Anything Leicester related. Tickets, shirts, balls, signatures etc. DON'T TOUCH 'EM OR DIE!

Other than that, anything that, anything I've payed good money for is a prized possession. I don't really get attached to objects so easily

Haven't really got any tbh (should I? :dunno: ). Expensive shit like my TV, Xbox, Computer are a given but nothing too sentimental.

I think photos are the most important non-expensive thing to me.

I have my grandad's tankard on my shelf, would never drink out of it but have always had it in sight in every house.

I also still own my first stuffed toy, the one everyone's got that was bought before they were born.

I asked my mum if we still had mine. Thankfully she said yes. A little teddy bear, I had.

Do you keep them in the toy box with the rest of your dolls?

A folder with every achievement of my life in it. Also got all my old tickets etc in

Phones with photos from trips on

Signed Paret Griffith fight poster in the fight he died in, worth about 4-5k but I'd never sell it.

Well, I'm not sure she counts as a 'possession' as such, but my cat means more to me than I can say.

Other than that, there's the usual stuff... phone, laptop, etc, but they don't exactly have sentimental value for me - it's more the frustration of losing the stuff that's on them.

There are other things I'd be disappointed to lose - pictures, photos, books, jewellery, even some clothes, oh and shoes... lots of shoes.

But the item that holds the most sentimental value, though, is a silver necklace that I bought when I first started seeing my other half. I bought it on a day when I couldn't be with him but couldn't stop thinking about him, and I know that whatever happens in our lives it'll always remind me of him. ^_^

Jordan, that Kleenex/LiLiPUT story is ****ing quality. Ü all the way!

Did you know that they once had a male drummer called Beat (sic) Schlatter, who went on to become a comedian and actor later on?

If you're into that sort of stuff, try Grauzone, a Swiss New Wave/Early Techno outfit!

Stephan Eicher, one of the members is a rather well-known and established musician now, has released many great albums, done everything in pop, mostly French chansons, though. lol

Slightly off-topic, I know.

Prized possessions I don't have many. Most of my belongings are easily replaceable.

I do have a vintage and signed Coventry Blaze shirt from a good mate in Leics that I'd like to frame at one point.

And then there's a yellow LCFC away shirt from 2008/2009 with pretty much all players' autographs on it, too (another candidate for a proper frame).

What I have got framed though is a class picture from my days at film school in Vancouver, BC. Taken on the school's rooftop on a sunny and bright day - a rare treat in that city.

A couple of books I rate very highly - The Stanley Kubrick Archives (a massive and beautifully crafted piece, very heavy though) or Dennis Hopper's "Photographs" for instance.

I also plan of getting a similar book on Tarkovsky, which is currently out of print, in the near future.

Other than that, I do like my Canon EOS 7D very much. And the fact that I'm living in a pretty decent and not too expensive flat/apartment.

But when it comes to basics, I do appreciate meeting new and interesting people in media/film/day-to-day life with every new day.

A teddy bear from heathens airport a few months after I was born - It's almost certain that I have invented the memory but I swear I can remember looking up at my dad as a baby when he gave it to me.

Also remember the England Coins sainsburys used to do for world cups and euros? Well i completed the 1998 set but thought I lost it over time but I found it the other day. My mum also pointed out that was the year my bro was born, that felt weird!

Even though I'm skint at the minute and selling most of my stuff (including the car if anybody wants!) these two thing will NEVER GO!

:P

On a serious note - my All-Ireland winners medal, my banjo, and if I was to pick one book - Jasper Fforde - The Eyre Affair

EDIT - obviously acknowledging that you can't own people
