The Falklands

Argentina may well not have the military might, but they have some clout in the South American political continent. As it's imperative in the years to come that we have access to the untouched, unmined, minerals, that lay preciously in countries where the government might not like to do business with us and our competitors instead, I wonder how the negotiations will go. The problem is the quantity of oil and gas in these fields and determining whether pissing off a whole continent of countries is a great idea, considering in the next 20 years Brasil will have a great of deal of say in all things worldly.

Not as much as they think. They invited ministers & ambassadors to their rememberence event in Ushuaia yesterday and not one turned up.

What is there to discuss? Argentina doesn't want talks, she wants the Falkland Islands, along with the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, and the British and Chilean areas of the Antarctic. Heck Cristina Kirchner has made it part of the Argentine constitution that any talks MUST end with Argentina having complete control over those lands. People are also talking about some sort of shared arrangement with Argentina concerning natural resources, but guess what, its been tried. Every single piece of co-operative legislation that has been signed between the Falklands Islands, the UK, and Argentina, the Argentines have ripped up.

Britain's claim is so absolute that we have offered plenty of times to take the matter to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to be decided there, but every time Argentina has said no, as she knows her claim is as weak as her economy, which is in utter turmoil after defaulting a few years back, with the vultures from Latin America, USA, EU and indeed that of the UK hovering.

Also, take little interest in "acts of solidarity" from other countries in South America, its just something those countries use to give the allusion that they are all united, when actually Argentina is far from the biggest or most popular kid in the room for many reasons. In fact almost all of the countries from South America bar Argentina and Venezuela (best of buddies ) are deepening their trade relationships with Britain.

Not that I am calling you a liar, but do you have any sources to confirm that, I would be surprised if true, the actual benefit of the Islands is minimal, it is all about the resources, and Argentina are probably not in a good state to cash in on that oil, so I don't know why they would turn down an offer of cooperative drilling, unless it was horribly weighted in favour of the UK.

The only other reason is, as Gold Coast Fox said, pure politicking, and stirring up feelings of anger in the direction of the UK and Chile rather than at the Argentinian Government, and distract them from problems at home. The worry is Cameron will do the same thing, we could end up going in to a war that neither side really believe in over a worthless piece of rock whose sovreignty is beyond question, except by such political heavy weights as Sean Penn or George Galloway (did any see the odious little turd's snivelling performance on "10 o'clock live" it was pretty cringeworthy, oh well at least he will never get elected...

Because what right do they have to attack what is effectively British soil over a period that is meant to be used to remember and honour the fallen

If I ever got into power that'd be the first slogan I banned.

Closesly followed by 'The Great War' and any sort of term for 'Hero'

But that's my favourite Foo Fighter's song and box of chocolates.

Now if those type of heros were to fall (namely all over the floor and get stuck to the carpet), then that would be a tragedy.

And as commercial as it is, we all know everlong wins! ;)

They wont attack, because they can't.

They have slashed their army budget since the last Falklands war and they have failed to invest in a single ship or air craft since.

Also, they only have 3 small boats (no bigger than fishing boats) patrolling their waters... This is not a country capable of mounting an invasion.

The only reason their big mouth president has brought this argument back up is because their economy is failing, it is just an attempt to distract their public from the state of their country...Also, if she really thinks latin america will put political sanctions on Britain, she is off her trolley.

I know that, i was on about the attack on the embassy

Argentina is trying to use the Falklands to do some more antiquated propaganda:

Argentine hockey player and captain Fernando Zylberberg shot exercising on the Falklands (without permission, of course).

What's the saying - if you got problems at your hands in your own country, it's always best to cover it up by changing the focus onto an emotionally rich subject.

Since when did anybody require permission to exercise in any country, ever?

Stunts like this only serve to drive the wooden stake a little further in the heart of Argentina's aggressive territorial ambitions. With their country on the verge of implosion (again) and with the international community hovering over the country like vultures ready to strike they deserve our pity, not anger.

Though i did chuckle at one little comment on that video, "It's not the first time we've seen an Argentinian running on the Falklands" :giggle:

That video is pretty pathetic, but probably no worse than some of the shit the Sun comes out with.

The funny thing is, that advert was actually made by British company, and even though their British based department has condemned it, is very suspicions.

Its just about oil a-f'kin-gen though

As much as The Sun is trying to whip up an 'OMG THE ARGIES ARE DANCING ON OUR SOLDIERS' GRAVES' shitstorm, most of us are coming up with wisecracks such as the one BlueSi has alluded to. That's probably the best approach because that advert is childish and laughable beyond all belief, glad to see we're treating it as the joke it is and moving the fvck on.

Well it is provocative exercising on a war memorial but thats why they did it.

Chile is relatively friendly to us which is why their navy often buys exRoyal Navy ships and they have had a few clashes with Argentina over the years regarding territory.

The latest Argentine leader is using the time honoured technique of blaming foreigners, creating hostile relations to distract from the countrys ills rather than trying to sort them out..

Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the international treaty banning military and commercial activities in Antarctica due to expire soon?

The Falklands will then become a very useful staging post for any activities there and Antarctica's oil resources could dwarf anything near the Falkland Islands. Given a choice of these resources being exploited by Argentina or Britain then I will choose Britain.

I am no fan of Thatcher and her ilk but I am pleased we managed to recapture the islands back in 1982. We should make it clear now also that British territory and overseas subjects will be protected by the British government from foreign imperialism.

I don't know too much about the Falklands, but if the people of the Falklands still wish to be British then so be it, unless Argies can come up with a diplomatic solution. personally i see this as a venture for oil!!

Did anyone see the argentinian ambassador on with Murnaghan this morning. What a mark 1 retard! She didn't actually answer any of his questions, i swear he was trying not to laugh at her. She didn't seem to understand or care that the people there want nothing to do with her country and are quite happy being British. Awful interview and made the whole country seem like an even bigger laughing stock than it already is (if thats possible) .

Oh you shouldn't worry - I'm sure there's plenty who aren't laughing at the UK.

If you read the story behind the video and the exercising, it explains that the problem is that the Argentinian government got hold of it and then used it as a propaganda tool.

Our government would never do anything like that.
