What are people protesting about? The fact the Queen is still alive? Bit harsh that.

At least the 4 day-weekend gives George Osbourne another excuse for the double-dip recession lol

This maybe the result of copious amounts of alcohol but I have to say it again ":o I can't believe it, I agree with acooling."

Really don't understand how people can get excited about something like this.

Hoping to see the republican protest getting some attention on the tele.

I fail to see the attractions of a Republic. Many such leaders have been an embarrassment and certainly don't attract the sort of tourist money a monarchy brings in. No, I'm not individually excited about about the occasion, any more than the Olympics - but that doesn't stop me appreciating what our generally highly regarded Queen does for this country and in so many ways.

It's a pity leading politicians haven't had the same dedication to service instead of self over the years.

Lets get rid of the royals and have an election for a Labour/Tory president to be our head of state, this will stop the moaners......

Palace of Versailles - 2.58m visitors a year, Windsor Castle - 680,000

The extra 1,900,000 people are a lie I assume?

There seems to be some sort of myth about how brilliant the monarchy is at bringing money into the economy.

This video is quite good at explaining it

Really authoratative, that.

You have to be a tremendously sad twat to have any real problem with the monarchy. I don't really care for it all and won't be celebrating the jubilee with any conviction, but I'd still much rather this part of our culture exist than for it to be replaced by more vacuous pop-mccrap

Of course, never mind that it's perfectly set up for the country to become a dictatorship, never mind that it flies in the face of the concept of equality - you've got to be a sad twat to put democracy and equality over pomp & pageantry.

Sorry mate but I don't get this argument at all. When was the last time the Royals forced through a law or action that went against the elected goverment? The Royal family in no way affects the democracy of the country.

Having the head of state an unelected position is undemocratic, it removes the public's ability to pick it's "leaders". However, the point in case is that, regardless of whether they actually exercise it, the monarchy has access to a hell of a lot of power - head of the army, church and state, able to choose the PM, able to declare wars without it being passed by the House of Commons first.

Parliament draws it's powers from the crown through a constitution, but there's very little to stop a monarch tearing that up, removing all of parliaments power and installing themselves as a dictator.
