Leicester City Football Club will stage a celebration of Thai sporting culture next month, as King Power Stadium plays host to THAI FIGHT EXTREME 2012!

On Friday 17 August, the eve of the new npower Championship football season, Leicester City owners Vichai and Aiyawatt Raksriaksorn will stage an exhibition of one of the most popular sports in their home nation of Thailand - Muay Thai - adding an eastern dimension to Leicester's reputation as a city of rich, diverse sporting culture.

The event, to be held in a purpose-built outdoor showcase within the grounds of King Power Stadium, will see 16 of the world's leading 'nak muay' competing in eight bouts of elite Thai boxing, displaying some of the incredible technical skills that have made Muay Thai Thailand's national sport.

In recent years, Thai boxing competitions have brought millions of tourists and interested foreign boxers to Thailand to applaud the art of Muay Thai.

And now, as their gift to the Leicester City supporters ahead of the new season, the Raksriaksorn family have worked to bring an exhibition of elite-level Muay Thai to King Power Stadium.

Leicester City Vice Chairman Aiyawatt Raksriaksorn said: "We wanted to give something back to the Leicester City supporters that would also introduce them to part of the Thai culture - something we could share with them, as they have shared their love of football with us.

"We are all very excited about the start of the new season and this will be a chance for us to celebrate its arrival together, before the team gets down to business against Peterborough United the next day."

A modern integration of several ancient boxing disciplines, Muay Thai incorporates the use of hands, feet, knees and elbows. Its popularity in Thailand is already firmly-established, but 'Thai Fight' is aimed at promoting and gaining global recognition for Thai art of self-defence.

Among the world-leading competitors at King Power Stadium on Friday 17 August will be:

BUAKAW POR PRAMUK, ABDALLAH MABEL, ABDOUL TOURE, HAMED ASSAN, ARMIN PUMPANMUANGWINDYSPORT, CRAIG JOSE, CRIVE BOUSSOUKOU, DYLAN SALVADOR, HOUCINE BENNOUI, JORDAN WATSON, LIAM HARRISON, MICHAEL DICKS, REGHI ISSAM, SAIYOK PUMPANMUANGWINDYSPORT, SINGMANEE KAEWASAMRIT, SUDSAKORN SOR KLINMEE.

Leicester City's Chief Executive Officer, Susan Whelan, said: "This is a remarkable opportunity for Leicester City supporters and the people of Leicester and beyond to experience something truly unique to Thai culture.

If we are going to celebrate Thai culture properly why don't we have a night where they set up a tribute to Walking Street in the 1884 Lounge, we could have flower houses and go go bars for everyone, I'd certianly be there and it will get a bigger turn out than watching some weight drained midgets playing Tekken with each other.

Come on Top, you know why us Westerners like Thailand.

I would just love you to say that to them and I assure you those "weight drained midgets" would destroy you in seconds, they are powerful highly trained athletes/martial art practitioners. If your comments are meant to humorous and not disrespectful then you have failed on both counts!

Got a bit of an unfair advantage then?

I used to do a bit of amatuer boxing myself so I'd probably fancy myself against a Thai featherweight. :ldn2012:

They generally are weight drained, I didn't mean that as an insult, some of the fighters I've seen get in the ring in these sort of events are dangerously conditioned (and I do a lot of work in boxing where some promoters will shove a fighter in with a guy a stone heavier to fill a card) to be taking the blows that they do, I read a while back it has a higher death rate than most other compat sports and I'm sure that's one of the reasons.

I'll probably go mind, like someone said it will be entertaining.

No chance I've seen Blood sport over a dozen times the film where they match different martial artists against each other and every time I see it the Muay Thai guy loses!

Not bothered about anyone playing Tekken with each other

Yeh, it's Tekken, exactly. BOOM POW SUPER FLYING TRIPLE AIR KICK. KO.

Christ. Don't ****ing go then.

I'd love to see this, just can't afford the time or cash. In fact, it's probably better entertainment than a bunch of fellas kicking a ball around.
