We are not looking for a starting CB with Gerrard. We are looking for a squad player to cover when needed, there us no need to spend huge sums on players like that. And let's not say we have Taft etc, Pearson sees them all the time and will know whether he thinks they are good enough to cover when needed. Loans are fine, but prem teams might not let them go yet until they have sorted their squads. Plus they will want their players to get game time not be 4th choice.

Very much a domino effect so maybe we have a few deals lined up but they are waiting to see if they can get their deals done before they let players leave.
