Charlton Post-match

I swear you see a totally different game to the rest of us!

The 1st 10 minutes knocked the stuffing out of you??? We could have quite easily been 2 up!

You only ever see games from your own negative outlook and it's getting quite boring!

But we weren't were we...... :(

And Charlton were already looking dangerous on the break, for all our effort early on, Charlton were more incisive in attack and more disciplined in defence, far better prepared and set up than we were.

For all the talk about us creating chances we score remarkably few goals, not enough players in the box in my opinion.

Our strikers are lacking in confidence and composure so we give them little or no support, we have so few men in the box that there is always a spare defender (or two) to snuff out any half chance that we might create.

And yet our goal was scored by King, a central midfielder, and Lloyd is being slated for 2 different easy chances he missed.

I swear you turn up to games already knowing what you're going to say about them and then filter your recollection of the game to suit your pre-determined negative outlook on things.

We were great in the second half yesterday and played our part in a hugely entertaining game. You seem to be the only poster who refuses to acknowledge this.

It was a very enjoyable game.

For the neutral, I would probably agree, a lot of open end to end play and plenty of goalmouth action.......

But I am not a bloody neutral........ lol

Why the hell are we playing so wide open, away from home against a decent team in good form....... :dunno:

Well I thoroughly enjoyed the game, we just need to be brave and stick with it and hopefully the results will come.

I don't believe we were that open, we were undone by a hoof and a throw in. As I've previously said, once we get an experienced centre back back from injury that should be less likely to happen.

After that performance there was no way I could post last night, had I tried it would not have been pleasant..... ;)

I had largely suppressed my negative thoughts from the weekend so It was with considerable hope and some optimism that I got the train out to Charlton. It took about 10 minutes for City to knock that out of me.... :(

Right from the off it was clear what was happening, Charlton allowed us to get forward then hit us at pace, our inexperienced and slightly makeshift back line was exposed time and time again but we made no adjustments whatsoever during the first half.

Unlike saturday, Drinkwater and James were given more freedom which left our back 4 largely unprotected, the classic one man dropping off, one man on the shoulder left us in a tangle that we were totally incapable of sorting out.

We got forward a fair amount ourselves but never really looked threatening, with Dyer and Marshal staying wide the front men were always outnumbered so the half chances that were created were quickly snuffed out.

2-0 at half time did not flatter Charlton, they started the 2nd half at a canter and were somewhat surprised by the energy we showed. King's excellent goal gave us hope and for a while it looked like we might get another.

However it didn't take long for Charlton to gain a degree of control that despite lots of effort from City was never really lost. Whilst we pressed forward with plenty of endeavour we lacked any real guile and quality, just a lot of huff and puff really.

Wum!!! lol

I accept that I think we have become predictable and that I see the same issues week after week, but I think they are so pivotal to the way we play and our season that I can't not comment....... :dunno:

As I said to Fleckney, it was an enjoyable game in the sense that it was wide open but that was because we gave Charlton loads of space to play in. If we are looking to push for promotion we need to get more out of these games than an 'A' for entertainment.

To me our attacking play is mostly huff and puff, a triumph of effort over real substance, there is still little creativity, though one pass from Drinkwater was excellent. Marshall was a peripheral figure and Dyer had one of 'those' games, this left our strikers lacking support and heavily outnumbered. There was always a defender or two to make the tackle or close them down so the 'chances' mostly slipped away.

Despite his goals, King does not really support the front players, that is not his game. Going forward he is a 'one trick pony', hell of a trick though..... :worship:

Understand entirely, though I simply can not be that detached when City are involved......... :/

I thought we were caught out defensively a good few times, could have conceded more (or less) than we did but that is the way it broke on the night.

More experience in the backline will probably help but we really need some cover from midfield, specially away from home, otherwise it is going to be a very tough season.

Frustrating that we were too open in the first half and didn't take our chances in the second half. We could have easily won the game as we dominated the second half and Charlton could do nothing about it.

I certainly am not going to get depressed about the team or any individuals after two games, we all know there are numerous teams in this division who are capable of promotion so it's not going to be easy at any stage. We have the players with enough talent to challenge so let's give it a bit of time.

I knew at the final whistle that the gloom and doom merchants on here would be salivating with joy at our loss.

Can't really add to what the others that went to the game said, we were on top from the start got hit on the break, conceded with their first shot and it knocked the stuffing out of us, then Kermo did what we all knew he would do. Despite our pressure from the start we didn't test the keeper enough.

Went with a mate who doesn't support Leicester, after Dyer got in a good position and spooned his shot early in the first half he said I assume he is right footed, alas no, that was with his stronger foot that troubled the corner flag more than the goal.

Pretty much summed up Lloyd's night worked hard, got in some good positions, but the end product was lacking, I think it is time for Knocky to start ahead of him, he looked class when he came on, except when he managed to trip over himself in their box, and he delivered an awful corner at the end when Kasper had gone up. For all the criticism of Lloyd though he did more the Marshall who just couldn't get in the game unfortunately.

As others have said we dominated the second half King was at his best and will probably start against Blackburn, James did ok, but the Difference King made was clear to see. Defensively we were disappointing, at one point in the first half Bradley Wright-Phillips managed to muscle Morgan off the ball, that shouldn't be happening.

All in all an enjoyable game lots of positives, but the usual negatives, missed the last train back and had to sleep on my mates sofa, now I am in work, still feeling rough and wearing yesterday's clothes.

Nice.

Sounds like we are just carrying on where we left off from last season.

Nothing at all like last season. We are confident and composed on the ball, there is a clear sense of purpose and everyone knows their role.

I cannot stress enough that people need to calm down and allow the team to continue trying to play.

At least someone 'gets it'.

The players may change but the style and setup remains the same....... :(

Vardy is the new Nugent, Marshall the new Gallager and Dyer is still Dyer. nothing changes.

As others have said, an enjoyable game to watch. Certainly more entertaining than the opener against Peterborough.

We conceded two soft goals really, and that was the big disappointment for me. I still think we will be better defensively this season compared with last time out...and it has to be remembered that St. Ledger and Whitbread are still to return.

I know there is a seperate thread for this, but I cannot emphasise to those that couldn't make it last night how bad Dyer was. In the first half he had the ball in acres of space on the left-hand side 4 or 5 times, completely unopposed, and failed every time to put a decent cross in. It seems to happen every time and I'm not sure why Pearson is still persisting with him. And as for the miss in the second half, the less said the better...

Keep him as an impact sub against poorer teams, when he can run against tired defenders and open the game up. But I really can't see how Pearson can keep starting with him. Would be very very surprised if he started the next game,

Dyer is Dyer how he starts games is beyond me, don't care if Kockaert needs time to bed him start him in games and we will be a better proposition on the left hand side.

Even thracian was happy with the attacking performance, and he is the biggest whingebag of all time about attacking displays.

Exactly. If Thracian and Fleckneymike are happy with the attacking side of our game, then it really can't be that bad.

We lost 2-1 and none of our attacking players seriously threatened the Charlton goal, so yes, it is that bad.

It's the defence I'm worried about, not the attack. We must learn to keep clean sheets in games like this.

Reading should be our blue print. At one point last season they won 8 in a row. During that run they kept 6 clean sheets (5 in a row) and conceded 1 each in the other two games.

And yes they did all of that playing 442.

If we learn to keep clean sheets, we will do very well with our attack. Hopefully the return of SSL and Whitbread will make that difference. I hope so.

Dave, I'm sorry, this is RUBBISH.
