Charlton Post-match

We lost 2-1 and none of our attacking players seriously threatened the Charlton goal, so yes, it is that bad.

Really? Everyone else seems to think we did (even Thrac), the radio did, and the bloke on Skysports was beside himself with how many simple chances we managed to fluff.

It's the defence I'm worried about, not the attack. We must learn to keep clean sheets in games like this.

Reading should be our blue print. At one point last season they won 8 in a row. During that run they kept 6 clean sheets (5 in a row) and conceded 1 each in the other two games.

And yes they did all of that playing 442.

If we learn to keep clean sheets, we will do very well with our attack. Hopefully the return of SSL and Whitbread will make that difference. I hope so.

That could be key. I think Moore has a lot of potential, but he is in at the deep end currently. Also, I think he prefers to play RB. Hopefully, it won't be too long before there's a more experienced pairing in central defence, and competition for places across the back four.

The left side, a suggestion.

Vardy is playing well but is currently letting himself (and us) down with a lack of composure in front of goal. Play him wide left and make the most of his pace and set up play. Takes a bit of pressure off regarding him scoring too......

(I would also suggest Knockaert on the right and Marshall playing behind Nugent through the center. Never going to happen though...... :()

This is what I'd like to see with King or Danns and Drinkwater in the middle.

Dave, I'm sorry, this is RUBBISH.

Then why am I struggling to recall Hamer making a load of saves?

Most of the 'chances' were fleeting half chances in the main and Charlton invariably had spare defenders to close us down and tidy up. As I have said elsewhere, our attacking play lacked precision and guile, maybe Charlton were lucky, but if we continue in the same manner, an awful lot of teams are going to get lucky against us this season.

Someone agrees, I must have got it wrong....... ;)

Pretty hard to fit those ideas into a 4-4-2 though Ric...... :dunno:

I'd be surprised if we missed many easier chances than Lloyd and Vardy's near the end if the game. God knows what your definition of "clear cut" is. Lloyd also missed an extremely presentable opportunity in the first half and Nugent missed the sort of chance he'd bury more often than not.

Somebody help me out here - did I imagine all this?!

Well considering most of mine were saying "stop slating x player after two games" and "you weren't even there" that's a bit unfair no?

I have not said anything specific about tonight's game. My comments are general and based on my experience from Saturday and before. For instance I have seen Dyer many times, I therefore feel I am able to defend him against someone who was at one game I wasn't.

I was only messing. :D;)

This 4-4-2 business really let's Pearson down. It's the reason he will never be a premiership manager. Fair enough play it sometimes. But every game? Really impressed me when he played a different formation away at palace last season! and oh wait - we won !

Couldn't watch or listen to the match last night because of work, but when I saw the result I was so deflated. but after reading the comments on here and the Charlton forums there look to be so many things to be positive about, and although we lost I think when we get a full squad (more than 2 cbs to choose from) we will be able to iron out all the niggly problems... Just need a striker to score now!! COYF

I have no idea? Maybe you were asleep, you had the wrong glasses on? Or perhaps just blinded with rage? ;)

First off he wasn't £1.7m, secondly have you even seen him play? Considering I've seen him twice and he looked better than Beckford both times now?

Beckford should be put in cold storage until the FA cup third round.

I was neither blind nor asleep, I can recall a Vardy header that was much too close to the keeper but after that I am struggling..... :dunno:

Maybe it was the wrong glasses, should have tried the rose tinted ones.......

Oh dear. It's bad enough to lose the second game but to try and be happy about it because we 'looked' better than last season is a bit lame. I only had the joys of Dickie Davis (he seems to get younger) to tell me how we were doing but he seemed a lot more impressed with Charlton than us. Why anyone felt that NP would 'turn it around' when he bought in a few stragglers from other clubs defeats me.

Also, it is a bit offensive for some of you to bang on about those who think NP is under qualified for management at this level as 'loving it' when Leicester City lose - what crap - I think George Osborne is a crap Chancellor and Camoron is a fool but I still want Britain to succeed as a country and likewise I think NP is out of his depth but get this - I STILL WANT LEICESTER TO WIN

Horrendous miss by Vardy, this is worrying as we'll only get limited chances in many games this season, you simply MUST take your chances, even half chances. Vardy and Lloyd should be having nightmares about those misses!

We'll get plenty of chances, the quality of this division isn't that great, especially defences.

Left the Valley last night wondering how we'd not come away with all three points, never mind not even getting one! We were better than Charlton all over the pitch, apart from when it came to finishing our chances.

Granted first half we didn't create a great deal, from memory a chance for Lloyd Dyer after a neat through ball to him with him managing to cut back onto his favoured left foot only for him to place very wide.

Second half, key chances fell to Nugent who fluffed his lines as did Lloyd Dyer and Jamie Vardy.

Dyer's perhaps the worst, one on one with the keeper only to scuff a tame shot pretty much straight at him.

Vardy's chance....Morgan with a superb cross only, leaving Vardy with a free header. Anywhere but straight at the keeper and we would have grabbed ourselves a point.

A few other points to note.

Liam Moore - Looked shaky last night, with a few defensive errors. He's only young and still learning the game at this level.

De Laet - Now he has his critic's but last night I thought he was our best defender on the pitch. Got forward well and delivered some decent balls in and managed to cope with his defensive duties also.

Knockaet - This lad is our trump card, the real joker in the pack. He is entertaining to watch, could be a real gem for us.

I think I might move the the Charlton board, reading this board since last night you'd think we were doomed. At least someone likes us...

Yeah they know their football over there, the last comment was particularly interesting.

There number 5 was a beast but an absolute donkey aswell

Where have I heard that before?

All I learnt from this game is that knockaert should not be allowed to take corners. His end product isn't a great deal better than dyers from what I've seen.

To be fair they have been used to league 1 football for a while and we are the first team they have seen at home this season. probably would have said it about most championship sides. But still never seen so much praise for another side
