Finnegan Posted 26 March 2013 Posted 26 March 2013 I tell you what, absolutely delighted Jonny Williams is fully capped for us. No idea what his views are on his nationality, he might have been brought up by his father to strongly consider himself Welsh but Brian Flynn deserves some real credit for pulling him through our youth system because he's a real livewire. He'd surely be an England U21 at the moment.
21st Century Fox Posted 26 March 2013 Posted 26 March 2013 Spain go 1 up with a scrappy goal, Lloris got two hands to it but didn't have the momentum to keep it out.

The Doctor Posted 26 March 2013 Posted 26 March 2013 and there we go, full time. Now then, on to 2016 qualifiers, I wonder how many games we can lose there.
Finnegan Posted 26 March 2013 Posted 26 March 2013 I'm pretty sure, he was referred to as the Welsh Iniesta on the Football Weekly podcast. Joniesta, yep. Croatia equalize with what will be called a wondergoal, modern balls move, rocket shot, super strike, etc. Nonsense, it was just shit goalkeeping. Disappointing, really, we were worth the lead. They've been knocking on the door all game though.
Jordan Posted 26 March 2013 Posted 26 March 2013 Ecuador is taking care of business--they're looking great to return to the World Cup. Meanwhile, the Bolivian "altitude sickness" strikes again--this time Argentina are the victims as they can only leave with a point. Speaking of high altitude, I'm really starting to shit my pants thinking of how the US is gonna get anything out of the thin, smoggy Mexico City air... A loss today doesn't kill our qualifying campaign, but that's not the point--Both sides want to beat the shit out of each other every time they meet regardless of setting, whether it's a World Cup qualifier or if the two teams just decided to play a pick-up game in a park.
Jordan Posted 26 March 2013 Posted 26 March 2013 How big is Canada vs USA? In hockey? Big. In association football? Not so much. Soccer is starting to get bigger in Canada, and while they would consider us to be their main rivals, that rivalry is nowhere near as big as USA-Mexico, or even the rivalries we have with the Central American teams.
ADK Posted 26 March 2013 Posted 26 March 2013 Engbland are so predictable, look good for 15 minutes, go 1-0 up and then go into "injury avoidance mode" whereby all 50/50's or even 90/10's are conceded to the opposition. Hope we don't qualify and it goes to a country where they genuinely want to play international football.

The woman's USA v Canada game in the Olympics was a corker, they were ****ing brutal.

You're too modest, Jordan, opting not to mention your own personal triumph. Beating Japan single-handed...hats off! Great night for conceding late goals for the British Isles teams...all 5 collapsed in the latter stages, didn't they? Though Scotland do seem to get in early these days and collapse shortly before kick-off... Lack of mental strength/concentration?
Jordan Posted 26 March 2013 Posted 26 March 2013 The woman's USA v Canada game in the Olympics was a corker, they were ****ing brutal. Women's soccer is a whole other story--those teams really hate each other, and Canadians were pretty sore after that game, feeling (and in some cases---ahem, Christine Sinclair--saying) that the fix was in. That game was some spectacle.
Jordan Posted 26 March 2013 Posted 26 March 2013 You're too modest, Jordan, opting not to mention your own personal triumph. Beating Japan single-handed...hats off! Huge win--I'm still in with a chance! Although I'm exhausted and I don't know how I'm going to be able to stay up for the game tonight...
purpleronnie Posted 27 March 2013 Posted 27 March 2013 Huge win--I'm still in with a chance! Although I'm exhausted and I don't know how I'm going to be able to stay up for the game tonight... The USA wil qualify out of that group, no worries.
MC Prussian Posted 27 March 2013 Posted 27 March 2013 Uruguay lost out 2-0 to Chile and are now winless in five. And Suarez punched an opposing player in the face. Meh.
cambridgefox Posted 27 March 2013 Posted 27 March 2013 Uruguay lost out 2-0 to Chile and are now winless in five. And Suarez punched an opposing player in the face. Meh. yep,it was Gonzalo Jara who plays on loan at Forest.
Jordan Posted 27 March 2013 Posted 27 March 2013 The USA wil qualify out of that group, no worries. My post was a continuation of the Jordan joke. There have been few 0-0 draws I've enjoyed more than that one, because our boys--especially the makeshift back line--hung in there and showed composure and toughness. This week began with a lot of talk about dressing room discord and insubordination, but what we saw this week--though we didn't see pretty soccer--was a team that played hard, played together, played with pride, and stuck to its game plan. Klinsi made it clear that he was not going to take the USA job if he couldn't bring his lofty goals with him--a long-term plan starting on Day One to create a more technically-skilled team, and to crack into the world's elite teams by playing a distinctly American brand of beautiful football. Klinsi believes that the U.S. cannot hope to improve upon its World Cup performances if the team continues to be stuck in the same style of play it has followed (with some tweaks) essentially since the early 1990s, and he is right. But I think Klinsi learned both from this week and from his team's friendly win at Azteca last year that sometimes, the Beautiful Game is better when it is played ugly. Goals to advance deep at the World Cup are nice, but you've got to get results to get there in the first place, and in CONCACAF, that means a lot of scratching and clawing when you're away. Klinsi was criticized by unnamed sources within the team in that Sports Illustrated article last week for being "scatterbrained" and having no strategical or tactical knowledge, but he got everything right about the defense last night, from the back line personnel decisions to his decision to have two deep-lying midfielders to relieve pressure on the young defenders when they had the ball and were hounded by Hernandez and Dos Santos. As for the World Cup qualifying, I'm not too worried after this week. Getting a point at Azteca--which we'd only done once before in a World Cup qualifier--is huge. And look at Mexico... Let's be honest: they should advance, but they only have 3 points despite playing two home games "Chepo" de la Torre took over Mexico a couple of years ago, and in that time, he shredded the rest of CONCACAF to win the Gold Cup and book a spot in the Confederations Cup, had his assistant coaches go on and win the Olympics gold medal and the U-17 World Cup, and destroyed his group in the semifinal round of qualifying... But all it took was recent results (and two games without a win at home vs the USA) for the fans to turn on the team in the last 10 minutes and chant "Fuera Chepo" last night

The Doctor Posted 7 June 2013 Posted 7 June 2013 Full-time in Zagreb - Scotland have actually won a qualifier! Beat Croatia 1-0.
purpleronnie Posted 7 June 2013 Posted 7 June 2013 Full-time in Zagreb - Scotland have actually won a qualifier! Beat Croatia 1-0. And played very well...apparantly.
Narborough_fox Posted 7 June 2013 Posted 7 June 2013 Massively proud, it's a small step to recovery but we're getting there. Been so much better since Strachan was appointed even if the results haven't shown it.
purpleronnie Posted 7 June 2013 Posted 7 June 2013 Ukraine winning has opened Englands group wide open, Ukraine have a real chance now to win the group. England have a massive game at Ukraine, the winner of that game should win the group.
Guest MattP Posted 8 June 2013 Posted 8 June 2013 Well done the Jocks. Was waiting for the late equaliser and all the 'so brave' shit to start. Venezuela winning away again. They have a real chance. Would love to see them qualify for their first World Cup. Be great for Juan Arango. Paraguay definitely out after losing 1-2 at home to Chile. Venezuela v Uruguay a huge game on Wednesday. Will probably decide who finishes fifth and beats the Asian team in a play off.
Leicester Lass Posted 8 June 2013 Posted 8 June 2013 Our very own Jermaine Beckford scored for Jamaica.
