Wes Morgan - best defender since 1987 for us?

I've made a bold statement by asking whether people think he is the best defender for us since 1987. The reason I say 1987 is because a match against Swindon in November of that year was the first I ever attended and I have to say he maybe better than my beloved Steve Walsh - my favourite ever player for us !!

What do people think??

I think he's great but Elliott and Taggart were immense against much better opposition.

This!

No point for me saying the same thing.

Morgan is definitely our best defender since the one's Foxer mentioned.

Great signing, great captain, bargain buy and an absolute rock.

Not for me but if he gets us promotion and establishes us as a top 10 prem club then he can rival Steve Walsh and Matt Elliott but until then he is a solid championship defender, and nothing more.

Defensively he may stand along side Walsh & Elliott although we've not seen him perform in the PL and he needs to be contributing at the other end of the pitch with goals before he's deemed better than them.

So a way to go yet.

He's much more well-equipped than any ex-LCFC defender I can think of for modern PL football. He's not going to be the 'best' until we've tasted success with him in the team, warranting value for money.

Even if he was better than Walsh you're stretching it a bit with 1987, Walshie was playing for us in 2000 still so it would be since then.

He's not better than the likes of him, Elliott or Taggart yet is he, and if we're honest his age is against him so it's unlikely he'll prove to be the quality top flight stalwarts they were. And as davieG says they were all contributing with memorable and frequent goals at the other end..

He's been great since he's been here, arguably our best player, but even recent defenders like Berner, Hobbs and Naughton performed superbly for their first year.

Lets get to the Premiership first and then we can start to maybe make comparisons with club legends who impressed in the top flight.

Remember when all the Sol Bamba bummers didn't rate him cos he didn't do Cryuff turn's on his own six yard box? lol

Glad to see he's finally getting the recognition he deserves, he's been quality since day one.

Most teams we've played seem to have been impressed with him, he must annoy the heck out of strikers as he's so difficult to play against and get the better of. Some Wednesday fans summed up our starting 11 well in my opinion, and this is whilst we're without a couple of players

Let's be fair. Leicester were the best side we've played this season. They had two jet-heeled and aggressive full-backs. Two monsters at centre-half who were aggressive and strong in the air. The two lads in there midfield did both sides of the job well. And then the front four had pace, power, and ability. Allied that to a strong work ethic, a fantastic pressing game and what appeared to be great trust in each other. We had our work cut out

That was an enjoyable read. I used to think those things about other teams when they'd come to our ground and think, why can't we play like that?

I'm not going to lie,

Reading that made me hard.

Wes is great but it's ridiculous to suggest he is anywhere near what Elliott and Taggart were.

For a couple of seasons Elliott could easily have played for a top 3 side in the Premiership.

Granted Big Wes is a cracking defender and arguably one of our best signings in the last 10 years taking ability, value for money and what he offers the club in the long term in to account. However, as numerous people have previously stated, it will take something special to knock Matt Elliott off his perch as the best City defender of the last 20 years.

He's been here less than a year

While very solid and very pleasing he's got a long way to go. Didn't the exact same thing happen with Bamba?
