Is it fair to say we are nailed on for top 6?

This may seem a rather arrogant statement but i believe we will now certainly get at least a play-off place this season. This isn't just based on the fact i think our performances have remained pretty much consistent throughout every one of the 18 games played so far but the way the Championship has been in previous years.

We have been astonishingly inconsistent the last two seasons. Yet we always kept a win or two away from the play off places to give us that glimmer of hope every week. The teams around us were just as bad. We had no right to still be in with a chance so close until the end of the season, yet we were.

We have been so consistent in our performances bar maybe last night it has been quite incredible. Although the results have not always been there, if you play like that for 90 minutes every game you will reap the rewards, something i was saying after the 3 straight losses while some of you were ridiculously calling for Pearson's head (such is the fickle nature of a large amount of our fanbase).

There is so many teams taking points off each other if we keep this up we will be there.

So we're no longer having to play catch up with a team full of big names who can't play together. We're a team in the mix playing incredibly well on a consistent basis. We will be in the top 6 come may.

We have Nigel. And Nigel has us. Keep the faith and Nigel will reward us :pearson:

Massive statement!

Bolton are 17th & only 8 points from us in 4th. There's a long way to go yet!

I think December will give us a better indication of where were at, Derby,Cardiff, Millwall, Hull, Burnley all tough games, loose 3 of those and we could find ourselves mid table.

I don't think it's a certainty but it does seem highly likely (maybe a 90% chance) and of course I'd be massively disappointed if we were to miss out by the end of the season.

I find myself looking at how many points we are off the top or 2nd place rather than how many we are ahead of 7th spot. I'm not concerned about not getting a PO place this year, I'm with you when you say that that is the bare minimum, the top two is the target.

I'd say absolutely not, however, we have got a very good chance.

To say we are 'nailed on' for the top 6 is as you say doesn't make us look great and could also make us look like complete twats if shit hits the fan. Things can certainly change and while I'm hopeful that we can have a real go at achieving a top 2 finish, I appreciate that we don't have any divine right to be there, or even the top 6.

We've gotten ahead of ourselves on numerous occasions in the past, the best example being: http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/topic/71101-we-are-no-longer-a-good-championship-team/page__hl__%2Blonger+%2Bchampionship

Oh, and the reason I'm on Foxestalk at this time is that I'm on nights this week, that's my excuse :).

Wow, after reading that it really does make you realise how carried away we got during that period. Having said that i don't think we have looked as good as we did during that period since the O'Neill days.

Admittedly it all went sour quite soon after but the way we abseloutely destroyed sides at the Walkers and outclassed the sheep on their own turf was breath taking at times.

I just think we have such a great chance now we aren't playing catch up like we were in that season. Maybe saying we are "nailed on" is setting me up for egg on my face. But i genuinely believe this will finally be the year.

We have a big chance, I'd probably estimate us being in the top 6 at somewhere between 75-80% considering our start and our room for improvement and investment.

Things are never nailed on in football though, Morgan and Nugent both go down injured next game with lengthy spells out and it looks an uphill task again.

We are nailed on for nothing. We have still have some inconsistencies about us, just takes them to get a bit larger and we will finish 9th/10th again. If we get a goalscorer in Jan though, i'm confident on top 6.

Feel we are good enough and feel we will achieve top 6, however the target has to be top 2 which I am not convinced we are capable of achieving.

The post above about Bolton being only 8 points behind just highlights how competitive the league is, but the fact is we are 4th for a reason.

Just worry about goals and who will get them particularly with nugent out.

I am not even convinced we will make the top 6 yet, I think we may well lose too many games and finish 7th or 8th. We might be performing with far more consistency, but at no point have I seen the real mark of a team that will go up. We don't pick up enough points away from home and too often we settle for dropped points or fail to snatch them all. Top 2 teams snatch 3 points from even contests with last-minute goals etc. We'd have beaten Forest if we were top 2, even after the stupid penalty and blatant handball. We'd have beaten Bolton too. As for the play-offs, results like Leeds will be the death of us, there are too many strong sides in the chasing pack for us to be able to lose games like that.

We have a good chance if we play like we can, we've outclassed a lot of teams this season but it only takes a dip in form to be mid table and a surge in form to be pushing for top 2, even if we were to slip out of the top 6 I would be massively worried because we've got the squad to get back up there, but nothing nailed on no way, such a long way to go yet

If you look at other sides in this league the likes of Wolves and Blackburn they haven't pulled up any trees despite the players they have in their ranks ability alone won't get you into the playoffs the attitude and team ethic alongside that ability will we have that in abundance to make the playoffs with ease imo, the real target is getting that 2nd place, and for me we can do it provided we strengthen in January which I think we will.

Anyone who knows anything about this league knows nothing is certain, anyone can and does beat anyone, (which is why I don't understand the knee jerk reactions to every loss).

What is for certain is we are in the best position we have been in for a long time to mount a serious promotion challenge, we have strength throughout the team and on the bench, not as much as some would like, but more than we have had in previous years. More importantly than that we have a team, not a collection of individuals, and that is what gets you out of this league, a team that will fight and die for each other and the club, if we don't get out of this league this season it won't be through lack of effort or commitment.

Posted

Of course it's not certain, there's really not much points-wise between us and the rest of the top half at the moment. However, if we keep our performances up I think it'd be pretty likely we'll finish top 6. A lot can happen between now and May, but I'm hopeful

It'd be great if we put a few more wins in a row and capitalise on any dropped points from Cardiff and Palace but they're on really good form. As are Millwall... someone cut them down soon please, I don't want us dipping below them.

We need to strengthen, if not then we could slip out of the top six and not get back in so no it is not a nailed on certainty.
