Welsh rock star Ian Watkins is to appear before magistrates charged with child sex offences, police have said.

Officers said the Lostprophets vocalist – whose hits include Last Train Home – had been arrested as part of a continuing investigation.

A spokesman said: "A Pontypridd man has been charged with sexual offences against children and is due to appear at Cardiff magistrates court today.

"The 35-year-old has been charged with conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a female under 13 and possession/distribution of indecent images of children.

"In order to assist their investigation, South Wales police has named the man as Ian Watkins, a member of the rock group Lostprophets."

Police added that two women, aged 20 and 24 from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, and Bedford respectively, had been charged with "similar offences" and were also due to appear in court.

All three were questioned at Cardiff Bay police station.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Peter Doyle said specially trained staff were available to speak to anyone with concerns or information regarding this investigation.

"I want to encourage anyone who has any concerns or information which they think may be relevant to contact us," he added.

"Safeguarding children involved in such cases is always a high priority and as such measures have already been taken."

I assumed it would be a case of him sleeping with an underage fan (13/14) but he's been charged with conspiracy to rape a 1 year old. :(

Never a huge fan of the band but always thought he seemed like a decent guy.

Just goes to show - all walks of life.

He hasn't been proven guilty yet.

I'm in noway a fan of the Lost Prophets and if this is true, I hope he get everything coming to him.

Just one thing, I'm not legal expert, but how come he can be named, but the two women charged along side him are kept anonymous?

Ian Watkins' Lostprophets bandmates have released a statement saying they are in a "state of shock", following his arrest on Wednesday.

The lead singer of the group is facing a number of charges including conspiracy to rape a one-year-old girl.

A statement on their website said: "Following charges made today against Ian Watkins, we find ourselves in a state of shock.

"We are learning about the details of the investigation along with you."

Signed by "Jamie, Lee, Luke, Mike and Stu," it concludes: "It is a difficult time for us and our families, and we want to thank our fans for their support as we seek answers."

Ian Watkins, 35, of Pontypridd, appeared before Cardiff magistrates facing six charges relating to sexual offences against two young children.

He faces a charge of conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child under 13 and four offences relating to possession and distribution of indecent images of children.

He was remanded in custody.

The court heard that he had not admitted any of the offences, which date from May to December this year.

A 24-year-old woman has been charged with the same offences as Ian Watkins, while a 20-year-old woman is charged with five of the same offences but not conspiracy to rape.

Bail applications by all three were refused and they are due to appear before Cardiff Crown Court on 31 December.

Lostprophets toured the UK earlier this year. Their latest album, Weapons, was released in April.

They also played at Radio 1's Hackney Weekend.

The line i highlighted, my mind just can't take in or comprehend it. To say I was stunned at reading that line is an understatement.

It's only guess but legally you can't identify victims of sexual abuse in the press once an allegation has been made. I assume these two women have children, so if you identify them then you could identify their kids - who maybe are the victims or potential victims.

Totally devastated and shocked when this news broke out. I've liked Lostprophets for a while (not so much with any of their recent music though) and now for some reason I find myself questioning whether I should listen to any of their music any more.

If found guilty, I hope he gets the harshest punishment possible. Same goes for the other 2 women.

That 'conspiracy to rape a 1-year old girl' sickens me even more.

Also, does the fact that they were refused bail add to the possibility that they are fully guilty of the allegations? Has anyone had bail refused but ended up being innocent?
