Fox in the North Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 As a student in hull, it's really not that bad. The city centre is just as nice as Leicesters (it has also just been renovated in the past few years) and yes on the outskirts it's crap, but aren't most cities like that? I'm gutted that Leicester didn't win, but it is certainly not as crap as you're making it out to be.
Finnegan Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 I'm not being funny but how attractive a shit hole is has nothing to do with culture. It's not won any awards for beauty, has it? Some of the bleakest, ugliest shitholes in the world have produced some of the best art and music, some might argue there's a direct correlation. Hello Detroit?
purpleronnie Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 I'm not being funny but how attractive a shit hole is has nothing to do with culture. It's not won any awards for beauty, has it? true.
Dan Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 I don't know how people are expected to take this seriously now. Hull is one of the biggest shitholes I've ever been to in my life.
Zingari Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 I think, for once, Soulsby got it right when he said Hull have won it because they need it more. The people I know from Hull are less than positive about it - this will hopefully help them turn it around. Leicester is, of course, the jewel of the East Midlands. I'm not sure why we felt the need to apply for it anyway. City of culture in all but name, my young friends I agree , we really ought to keep Leicester as a bit of a secret destination for the more discerning traveller. Best not to draw too much attention and be mobbed by the flat cap and flowery frock riffraff. It's a blessing in disguise
pSinatra Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 I think people are being a bit unfair about Hull. It's not the prettiest, but it's certainly not one of the biggest shitholes. Are people basing this assumption on a rare visit to the KC Stadium? I've never been to the KC, but I've been to Boothferry Park a few times - which is in the same area. It's not nice at all, but it isn't a reflection of Hull as a whole. Hull has a rich history & has experienced many cultures, due to it's port. I've been out a few times in Hull & whilst it's not London, Paris, New York........it's a lot better than Coventry, Derby & plenty of other places I could mention.
Rincewind Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 Thought it was for 2017? How come they award it now? I thought that was the reason for all the roadworks and renovations so to get it ready for judging. Of course if Leicester is judged now it will look bad.
lavrentis Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 Hull got it? I take it they actually took a look in Leicester then.
Bryn Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 No surprise that the people who have actually spent time in the city say it's alright and all the other moronic cuntholes jump on the slagging it off bandwagon. Stupid.
lavrentis Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 Hull's a great city from what I heard. Unfortunately it beats Leicester automatically on the fact it has a marina.
Zingari Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 Hull's a great city from what I heard. Unfortunately it beats Leicester automatically on the fact it has a marina. we've got a marina too it's on Brauny gate
lavrentis Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 we've got a marina too it's on Brauny gate I actually checked that out once and if i recall correctly, that actually has a really poor hygiene rating
Zingari Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 I actually checked that out once and if i recall correctly, that actually has a 0/5 or a 1/5 hygiene rating i don't know why , it looks classy and absolutely spotless
Dan Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 Hull v Leicester is like two bald blokes fighting over a comb. Both shitholes in my experience. Look at the other contenders - Swansea? Dundee? Come on.
Guest MattP Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 we've got a marina too it's on Brauny gate What on earth would possess anyone to eat in a place like that? I'd take my chance in a bin before going in that.
lavrentis Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 What on earth would possess anyone to eat in a place like that? I'd take my chance in a bin before going in that. That place in particular is ridiculously bad. Right next to Tesco 24 hour as well so literally no excuses.

I'm gutted that Leicester didn't win, but it is certainly not as crap as you're making it out to be. I agree with you. I spent a day in Hull last year and, although the approches might be a bit grim, the city centre (apart from the shopping centre) is actually nice with plenty of history and historic buildings that come from the old seafaring days when Hull was a major trading port.
Guest MattP Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 I think people are being a bit unfair about Hull. It's not the prettiest, but it's certainly not one of the biggest shitholes. The consensus seems to be among people who have lived in both is Hull > Leicester. We have certainly slipped haven't we.
pSinatra Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 The consensus seems to be among people who have lived in both is Hull > Leicester. We have certainly slipped haven't we. I just think there's a lot of people on here making judgments without substance. Leicester & Hull are industrial cities & both have their good & bad. I wouldn't be surprised if half the people commenting on what a shithole Hull is have ever been, or anywhere other than the KC Stadium. Should every visitor to the KP base their opinion of Leicester on the shithole that is Narborough Road? The award of City of Culture was not based on which was the prettiest. Look at the last city of culture.........it's a fecking war zone!!
rico Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 we've got a marina too it's on Brauny gate Had a couple of good nights in the place next door
Strokes Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 I've worked in hull, its no worse than leicester if anything..........
Voll Blau Posted 20 November 2013 Posted 20 November 2013 Glad we didn't win, but Hull seriously!!! Er, why?
