AjcW Posted 8 March 2013 Posted 8 March 2013 No matter whether we have culture or not, we have the worst town planners you could possibly ask for, and one of the most poorly laid out cities in the country... we have lots of nice parts, they just dont link together at all! You come out of a station (that they've spent millions on making it look worse) and you are greeted by a horrible intersection and a ten minute walk to get anywhere close to the actual centre. We've got a cultural quarter built on the exit to the city centre hidden behind the back of a main road into the city that has pretty much nothing on it! (couldn't of just developed it on that road?) And I haven't even mentioned that ****ing blue thing! If all the nice parts were well gelled together, as with a lot of cities, then we would undoubtably be contenders, but as it is we have no right to be on there, and in fact the terrible decisions the town planners have made over the last ten years should be criticised not potentially rewarded!

Alternatively; you could cross London Road, walk down Waterloo Way and make your way to the city centre through New Walk. Certainly beats the journey stepping over the chicken bones and past the dodgy pubs you get when walking up to Nottingham city centre,

God knows what people think of Granby Street.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 8 March 2013 Posted 8 March 2013 God knows what people think of Granby Street. I think the general consensus is that it's a shit'ole.
Finnegan Posted 8 March 2013 Posted 8 March 2013 That Tory MP is right to be fair. MOST SHOCKING MSTTFP QUOTE EVERRRRRRR!!!

Is it possible, that a good amount of shoppers wouldn't want to shop in a multicultural atmosphere. If you look at the city geographically, people on either side of the A6 tend to be culturally different. Maybe if they don't want to live with eachother, they don't want to shop in a similar atmosphere?
Mike the Metal Ed Posted 10 March 2013 Posted 10 March 2013 Always wondered why we have never signposted that route properly and encouraged it. God knows what people think of Granby Street. Home of Grand Kebabs, which has the best customer service of any fast food shop in Leicester. I'll not hear a bad word about it! To be fair, they've been working on Granby Street from the railway station inward ever since they filled in the underpass and introduced a crossing, maybe one day in the far-flung future it'll make its way to the bottom of the road. Now that I live in Southend, where the council have put a fair bit of money into improving the High Street seemingly, I can safely say that David Amess is either blind or stupid (and I think Brass Eye viewers will know which), as when I say Southend has a much-improved, nice High Street, that's all there is. Take a road left onto Chichester Road, and it's no better than St. George's Way, maybe even worse. Queens Road is little more than a couple of run-down shops. The sea front is as tacky as Skegness and has the unfortunate situation of leading you into Shoeburyness. Leicester's actually a lot better than some towns and cities that have tried to reinvent themselves, have you never been to Doncaster?
Rincewind Posted 10 March 2013 Posted 10 March 2013 Is that opposite the Plant on Dover Street? Went in there on Friday night as I went out for a change. They always give you something while you wait.

ADK Posted 11 March 2013 Posted 11 March 2013 Presumably this is a chance to waste some more taxpayers money when public services are being cut.

DennisNedry Posted 6 May 2013 Posted 6 May 2013 What's in it for the city that wins? Just the prestige?

Guest Bilo Posted 6 May 2013 Posted 6 May 2013 Bloody hell cooling, it's like having Jim Davidson on the forum. Put down your Daily Mail, log off the BNP forum, pick up your jazz mag, open up Red Tube and crack one out. You'll feel so much better lad.

They set up marches around the country, defending us from something or other.
Webbo Posted 19 June 2013 Posted 19 June 2013 Surprised nobody has updated this; Leicester has been shortlisted as a potential 2017 UK City of Culture, alongside Hull, Dundee and Swansea Bay. The four cities were selected from a longlist of 11, including Aberdeen, Plymouth and Chester, one of the favourites. Mayor of Leicester Peter Soulsby said: "We're down to those final four and we're determined to make sure we are the 2017 City of Culture." The final decision will be made in November. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-22966794
Captain... Posted 19 June 2013 Posted 19 June 2013 Surprised nobody has updated this; http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-22966794 With that as our competition we might stand a chance.
lavrentis Posted 19 June 2013 Posted 19 June 2013 The thing is, if we have to promote multiculturalism so much it just shows we are clutching at straws. I don't know how Leicester can be a candidate tbh
