Bad Railway experiences

Anyone had any bad experiences on the railway like missed the last train home, waited hours for a train, cancelled train, rude staff, broke down train then put your stories in this

Posted

I've never missed a train because I make sure I'm early enough. I've waited for a delayed train, and travelled a longer distance due to railway maintence but that's it.

It's not usually the staffs fault for problems such as delays and maintence. I hate it when I see a train is delayed due to a problem and the passengers shout at the staff. It's like, shall we get there later but safe, or do you want to end up in that field?

After Sheff Weds away this year the last train from Nottingham to Leicester never turned up, had to cab share back to Leicester with two Man Utd fans, that was a pretty bad experience

About ten years ago me and my family were off on hoilday to Newquay and our train was three hours late! Once on the train we were later told that the train would terminate at Par! On arrival at Par they said a coach was going on to take us to Newquay, once everyone was on board the coach driver came on told us that there "was a change of plan" a train going to Newquay was arriving in five minutes, so everybody at to get off the coach and at to rush to the platform at Par, only for the train to be heavily packed due to it came from London! what a journey!

My biggest problem with train travel is the other passengers. People who are drunk and abusive at midday, people that need to shout down their mobiles. People that insist on seeking out their seat reservation even though there are empty seats everywhere and act like you are some sort of thief for sitting there when you probably paid five times the price they did due to having to get a ticket on the day... Also non-London train travel is very expensive, once im over 25 i don't think i'll ever use the train again as it's usually cheaper to drive myself there and back by car than buy a train ticket.

Trains in Europe are generally great though.

Hang on. You criticise someone with a reservation for wanting to sit in their seat in an empty carriage? Why on earth, when in an empty carriage, would you choose to sit in a reserved seat?

Trains have usually been very good to me, except when I worked at Dunelm Mill's HQ over Christmas 2011, and I'd have to wait 40 minutes for the next train to Leicester from Syston, which would always, without fail be 7-12 minutes later even than that.

I went up to Elgin for a friend's birthday, and didn't reserve a seat on the Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley train, by the time it reached Peterborough for me to board it was at critical mass and I had to stand in between two coaches all the way up to Edinburgh.

Paid £199 for return from London to alfreton today not impressed.

Complained plenty of times on the grind my gears thread about trains, including sitting on a train at a platform, while other trains to the same destination came and went without anyone on the train announcing that it was going to wait there for 20 minutes and I could catch one of the others.

I constantly get pissed off by trains, but more by commuters than the trains, the amount of absolute cvnts you see on a daily basis in London on the tube is ridiculous. Today I saw someone stand halfway on a packed train, get smacked do both arms as the door shut, got her bag trapped in the door so it had to open, she shoved herself further on, got hit again by the door, got her bag stuck in the door. The people on the platform ended up shoving her bag through the door and it eventually left.

30 seconds later the next train turns up. I see this or something similar every time I get the tube.

And this is why I cycle or run to work daily! Unfortunately, because I went out on Friday and left my bike at work over the weekend, I decided to get the bus this morning. It's usually 30-35 minutes door to door. Took an hour and twenty today. I could have walked it in an hour. FURY. Still, better than doing the 30 min (door to door) tube journey, even though only about 15 minutes of it is on the tube.

I know this thread is about trains but I DON'T CARE.

Its not always easy to avoid sitting in a reserved seat when every advance booking comes with a reservation that few people actually use.

After visiting my sister at QMC last week, it reminded me of an entrance interview I had at Nottingham University & how my life may had turned out differently if it hadn't have been for a shite train service. It was 20 years ago, but I can't think things have improved any.

I got to Leicester station in plenty of time. About 10 minutes before the train to Nottingham was due it was announced that it had been cancelled. The next train wouldn't get me to Nottingham in time for my interview, so decided to get a taxi, as that was my only chance of making it on time. The taxi cost something like £50, I got stuck in traffic & I was half hour late for my interview. They were kind enough to still interview me, but I was flustered, nervous, embarrassed & the interview could not have gone any worse. The worst interview I have ever had.

Nottingham University was my preferred choice & I suppose "shit happens", but it's fair to say that I would not be where I am now (for better or for worse) had that train not been cancelled.

From Delhi to Calcutta, something like 40 hours. Sleeper class, each area had six beds, for six people. In my area there was at its peak 22 people, and never less than 15. My top bunk bed turned into a top bunk space of about 1metre squared. No air con, and the bunk was too high to catch the moving air from the fans. It was 40 degrees outside, and the sun was beating down on the metal train. The ceiling was about 20cm from ny head and boiling hot to touch. Must have been at least 50 degrees inside the train. No room for movement. 40 hours. Fun.

Good God man. The longest I did was the 16 hour Jaisalmer to Dehli. In AC3. I felt like a king.

I've had it before where someone was sat in my seat so I sat somewhere else, only to constantly get moved by other people wanting to sit in their own reserved seat. Thus... I can understand anyone wanting to sit in the seat they have reserved as it saves you getting ****ed about.

Been watching a program every week based on trains, east coast and west coast services. Watching it highlights why the prices of trains are so expensive; people will steal a little bit of pipe from the rail that costs like hundreds to replace, and in terms of being late, little things like people trying to kill themselves stops services which then obviously back up. It is frustrating but I'm not one of those passengers that blames the staff because, it usually isn't their fault.

Just arrived at Narita Airport ready to get the train to Tokyo, thought I'd ask some guy directions to get to the platform. After 5 "sumimasens" he directed me, I somehow ended up in Chiba terminal lol Where it is pretty small and Japanese text only, I thought I was ****ed as I was the only gaijin strolling up and down this terminal looking so out of place then I thought I rememebered the Kanji for Tokyo so went for it and luckily it arrived at Akihabara which was 1 stop away from Asakusa. All this with a rucksack, a 20KG suitcase where I was carrying it up and down stairs in a blistering heatwave whilst I was wearing jeans . On the way home I found out such thing of a Narita Express which is 1 train to and from  That was the only time I "got lost" though.

My worst train experience is when the last train on a Sunday afternoon from Euston to Liverpool coincided with Liverpool playing away at Chelsea. Not only was the train rammed beyond belief, but I had to spend the entire 3hrs 15mins to Lime Street being incessantly talked at by very pissed, very tedious scouse wankers.

We all know what scousers are like when they're sober - they believe that they are the most informed, interesting, entertaining and hilarious people on earth - stick some pints of cheap lager down their necks and the problem is magnified.

On the contrary actually the Shinkansen is pure bliss, possibly the best train experience ever. Even the staff on board give you a little bow as they walk in and out of the carriages

I was once sick into one of the heaters next to my seat, only for some old geezer to come and sit opposite me and spent the whole journey sniffing the air wondering what and where the smell was coming from.
