Dude no-one outside Gujarat and Leicester talk or even acknowledge Gujarati food.

"Dude", that's the naivety. Folk in Leicester are lucky that they can appreciate Indian food is varied. It isn't all pints, poppadums, biryani, paratha and chicken curries.

Do any of these restaurants have piles of litter and left over food lying around outside if not they're not what's making Leicester a dump. :P

I usually go for shit right outside them after i've ate.....

:thumbup:Cool.  Not tried those, next when in town I will have a look.

If you prefer the West Mids, recommend Five Rivers in Walsall - brilliant!

I mean you clearly have an anti Leicester agenda so no point listing any others lol. It was the one on Park Road. Will go to Birmingham again this year so will hit you up for some suggestions beforehand!

Oh come on, FFS, aren't we sensitive.  I never said they were bad, there ok, not great.  Trust me, i'm the same about Birmingham or eating Indian in general, my mates and family absolutely hate me.  Hence I tend not to eat Indian out by choice.

City never recovered from Bombay Bites going from Belvoir Street.  Food was class and it was basically a rave in there whilst waiting.

The resurgence of Silver Arcade is good to see

Bryter Moon is great. It’s about the only place in the city centre that has a good range of local produce. It’s a massive shame a cafe shows up pubs on stocking local beer.

Never said it was.

It's not just cities, it's the country as a whole.

People used to have pride in their houses. People just dump all of their unwanted shit outside the front now and expect some other person to deal with it. If it's not taken in a few weeks it will still be there.

I think this has fed down from councils and up from those who simply don't care.

We see an increase in littering, fly tipping etc and councils are doing less and less to keep areas clean and safe. It's all just building up and levels are dropping more in cities.

Obviously this isnt everywhere in cities, areas of them are incredibly nice

Back in December, I criticised that Leics Council were going down the rent a Christmas market route

At the weekend, I seen Leicester is going to do a lights festival. Oh good, a bit of freshness (although ironically I saw this in Turin over December).

I’ve come into work this morning in Birmingham and found Birmingham is doing exactly the same thing.

Someone must be going around councils making a fortune by pitching the same circuit of events to them

Likely BIDs that arrange it. Leicester CC are completely normative when it comes to trying things. Box parks, the Halloween monsters, light festivals.

Cities with a profile like Leicester’s can get ahead events wise by being trying all sorts and being a great test case. Instead the BID and council will wait until something’s tired elsewhere and package it up as innovative here.

It appears to have been the case in B'ham

We went to that, parking was atrocious. Lights were alright just the weather let it down. I wouldn't go again now I've been, but I think it's great that Leicester are doing stuff like this.

Interesting thread

TLDR: Shaming the rouge clothes factories has led to them shutting down rather than improving standards

No surprise

price points are the issue

if you can’t make it here for the price then you’ll make it in n Africa

we only kept this part of the business by exploiting the workforce, ignoring health and safety and dodging  taxes etc

all we’ve done is move the risks and exploitation back to another part of the world.  the cheap clothing is still being sold.

If govt remove de minimis on cheap imports from Asia then that could help but can’t see it ever going back close to where it was for the e midlands. Things have moved on with the support structure pretty much gone and too expensive to bring back.

We also have the most expensive electricity pricing in Europe which canes manufacturing

Energy is relevant but not the biggest cost in cutting and sewing an item of clothing.  The fabrics are different though and a fair proportion in the supply chain were still being made locally.  Like you say, that wouldn’t work now because of the energy prices.

That’s ancient history though

I've read several times recently on Reddit about a "One-Pound Dan" in the city centre.

Pretty sure I had an encounter with him around 2006 in Castle Park. Bloke asked for a quid as I was walking back from the gym, which I didn't have and he got properly arsey and basically chased around like something out of a Benny Hill sketch. Can't be sure it was him, mind.

Can't say I've ever heard of him but everyone on the subreddit seems to have a story.

Every town has these. Also those who might hang around a bus stop to ask for a couple of quid to afford the bus fare home or similar sob story.  I fell for it once or twice.
