Carrick.

(I realise this is at odds with my "look to the future" comments, my thinking is that Carrick is more experienced at international level and, well, a much better player than Nolan).

I was going mention that bit, I'm not sure about this but am I right in saying Nolan as scored more than Carrick this season? or am i wrong?

Gerrard plays much deeper for England, Carrick also plays deeper which means that he's a better replacement than Nolan, who is more of a box to box midfelder.

One player who deserves to be on that plane for me right now is Jordan Henderson.

Been impressed with him this season, really coming into his own.

Never thought much of him, until this season.

Couldn't agree more.

Not sure if it's the way Rodgers is managing him but he seems much more comfortable on the ball this season.

Agree there it was certainly a mistake taking him to Euro 2012, prior to the tournament he was out of form and didn't look fit. However this time round he's having a cracking season and deserves to be on that plane to Brazil.

As Welbeck done enough to secure a place?

Would anyone be tempted to take Kevin Nolan to the world cup?! scored a few goals an experienced head in midfield. Arguably a possible good replacement for Gerrard for if Gerrard picks up an injury while on tour.

Nolan probably deserved a call up about 5 years ago in a kind of "well done you're not terrible here's an England cap" way, and then never to been seen in an England shirt again. Much like Kevin Davies. He is absolutely nothing like Gerrard, and the fact you think he'd be the best back up to him is laughable.

Just watch Cleverley go ahead of Henderson... can see it now

It's certainly an interesting dilemma, can only see Hodgson taking a maximum of 5 out of Gerrard, Lampard, Wilshere, Henderson, Carrick, Lallana, Barkley and Cleverley.

For me I'd take Gerrard, Lampard, Wilshere, Henderson and Lallana.

Huddlestone and Curtis Davies ought to be considered. Not going to be a common thought but still...

Gerrard, Barkley, Henderson, Lampard, Wilshere.

I get the feeling lampard won't go. Really missing a ball winning defensive type midfielder looking at the names mentioned. Henderson should go on form but can't see him starting.

I think Lampard will go for his experience and he's played a big part in qualifying. I think Gerrard and Wilshere are nailed on to start in the middle +1. Perhaps Rooney even in a deeper role behind Sturridge?

To be honest I hadn't thought about it before but this is the first England squad in my lifetime that doesn't 90% pick itself.

There are a lot of players who are going to miss out. Big names who've under performed, not so experienced players who have been superb, they can't all go.

Players like Milner, as an example. Is he going to go? Bookies think so, 4/9 best price. He's gonna take the place of someone like Lallana or Sterling or Rodriguez who have all had fantastic seasons whilst Milner hasn't done much but has been there and done it at previous Championships. A lot of dilemmas like that for Hodgson is every position.

I massively doubt if you sat down 100 people they'd all give anything like the same squad.

Never compare Kevin Nolan to Steven Gerrard again.

And never suggest taking Kevin Nolan to a World Cup again.

Henderson has been by miles the best English midfielder in the past 18 months.

Well said young man, well said.

Gerrard, Wilshire, Barkley, Henderson and Carrick would be my 5 central midfielders for the World Cup, at the minute.

Glad people are taking note of Hendo now, he was a bit dodgy when he arrived but that was because everyone just took the piss out of his price and he was lumped in with Carroll and Downing as stupidly overpriced underperforming English players who Liverpool bought.

I assume you watch more Liverpool than me and know more of the ins and outs of the team but living here I obviously watch a fair bit and talk a lot of Liverpool working in a bookies. Since he got into the team last year he's been better than any other English midfielder, easily. I said in last year's PL thread towards the end of the season he'd been one of Liverpool's better performers and he'd get better if Rodgers kept him in the team. Fair play to them both, Rodgers for giving him the chance and presumably coaching him very well and Henderson for getting better and better to now being at the stage that it is genuinely very noticeable when he is missing from the Liverpool team (see Arsenal in the cup recently, for example). And that's a Liverpool team challenging for the title, not a 7th place Liverpool team.

5/4 still available for him to go to the world cup. Mental price. Gerrard, Wilshere, Lampard, Carrick, Barkley and Lallana all priced lower than him.

Yeah, strange how people still don't seem to rate him even though he has I think missed one Premier League game for Liverpool since Norwich at home last season which was January. Especially when you say, Liverpool aren't a team in 6th or 7th place, we're a team 4 points off the top. Compare Hendos stats to any other English or central midfielder in the Premier League and I think only Yaya Toure this season comes out ahead of Jordan.

His price tag will always be a cloud over him, until he continues to improve and people actually watch his game when Liverpool are on TV and realise he is a box to box midfielder with a lot of ability. Hendo has had a lot of assists this season and scored some great goals, Notts County in the Cup, Spurs away and both his goals yesterday were good goals, all very different as well.

No word of a lie, one of the best things to come out of the Brendan Rodgers reign at Liverpool is that Henderson refused to move to Fulham apart of a proposed Clint Dempsey deal.. We have benefited in three players from that alone, the improved Jordan Henderson and our poor start to last season meant the owners had to give Rodgers some money to spend and he spent it very wisely on Phillipe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge.

A lot of fans in Liverpool are seeing Jordan as a possible Reds captain, that alone is a lot of praise for a young mans shoulders.

Oh and by the way, whilst we're all praising Jordan Henderson (yes I know only a few people are, that was sarcasm), don't forget Daniel Sturridge who has scored 8 in 8 Premier League games, first person to do that since Ruud Van Nistelrooy. What an achievement that is, especially when you're a one man team with Luis Suarez upfront!

I think that's the main thing I look at as someone who isn't a Liverpool fan when talking about Henderson these days, the fact that so many of your fans have taken him to heart.

He was ridiculed by fans of other teams in his first 6 months or so but quite a few Liverpool fans agreed and some may even have wrote him off. A move to Fulham shows how "take him or leave him" he was 18 months back. Now he's week in week out one of their best players. They all love him. Partly because he's proven them all wrong through hard work as well as skill (see Jamie Vardy for how proving fans wrong turns you into a hero) but also because he is a very good young English player, and one that will hopefully be at the heart of Liverpool and England teams in the future if his improvement continues at this level.

As for his stats, they are massively impressive but as a lot of people will say you can prove any point by plucking some stats to make you look right. People just need to watch him play a few games and listen to people who watch him every week to realise those stats aren't lying.

I had £20 on him to be on the plane after he single handedly (kinda lol) tore Spurs apart in December and I might throw another chunk on him now. Barring a nasty injury, which touch wood looks unlikely as his fitness is impressive as his consecutive appearances show, I genuinely cannot see how he can be left out.

Sturridge is shit hot at the moment and fair play to him too because he had talent but nobody thought he'd be this good. If he can take even 75% of this form to the World Cup we won't struggle for goals if we play the right way.

Shame as Hodgson's in a lose/lose really when it comes to announcing the squad.

For what it's worth I think you could take all four of those you named. Milner gets a lot of unjustified stick for me, tidy player.

Cleverley shouldn't go. He's so average it hurts.

Henderson's surely got to go. I'm glad him, Sturridge, Sterling and others are playing under a progressive manager who emphasises on development of players like Rodgers. If there were more managers like him in England then we'd be a far better side IMO.

Yeah but if you take those 4 then you're done for wingers/attacking mids, no? What about the likes of Oxlade-Chamberlain, who's clearly a Hodgson favourite and went to 2012. Walcott fighting back to be fit would go if he is too? Welbeck?

Not naming players I necessarily want to go or think deserve to go, just ones I can't see being left out. I was gonna write a provisional squad but I ended up with about 35 names and couldn't work out who would realistically get the chop so left it haha.

We have a vast amount of centre mids and wide/attacking mids (not all necessarily any good mind you) but very few strikers. Rooney, Sturridge and then you're struggling for anyone with even a glimpse of quality really.

Gonna be very interesting and I'm actually looking forward to seeing the announcement for a change.

Hull are having a good season. They have strengthened their squad excellently. The acquisition of Long and Jelavic have been key.

Bruce is a very good manager.
