Fifa loses free-to-air World Cup TV battle

Fifa and Uefa have lost an appeal against a European ruling that the World Cup and Euro Championships must be shown on free-to-air TV in the UK.

In 2011, the European General Court said the UK could keep the events on a list of "protected" events of national sporting interest broadcast for free.

It means the two tournaments cannot be sold exclusively to pay-TV firms.

Fifa and Uefa had appealed, after saying they could not sell the events fairly for their real value.

But the European Court of Justice - Europe's Supreme Court - has now said the original decision in the General Court (formerly Court of First Instance) in 2011 was correct.

The BBC and ITV had already secured the rights to broadcast the football World Cup finals in 2014, and they were guaranteed of being shown free-to-air.

But there had been fears that moves towards a pay-TV model would have been in place in time for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, should Fifa and Uefa have won their case.

Fvck off. lol

Platini and Blatter trying to make the biggest football tournaments PPV? What a surprise.

Glad it's been rejected.

It wont last forever, they'll get it sold to Sky eventually.

Really wish the people who are suppose to love and run the game for the good of us all would for once take a step back and look at what they are doing to it.

I love the EU   and being part of it

Yeah what a great thing FIFA can take our own court rulings to some unelected judge who has never had anything to do with this country to try and get it overturned.

Like Pablo says, only a matter of time unfortunately.

What a fantastic way to make the game accessible to anyone and everyone.

Blatter is such a ****, Platini no better. Can't wait to see what kind of ****ing crackpot idea these governing bodies are going to concoct next.

It would be the same whoever was running/ruining it, the more money FIFA/uefa rake in the more ends up in the pockets of those running the game taken from the pockets of the people, the fans without whom it would not exist.

Greed by those running Countries, organisations and businesses has never been so rife. At least in days gone by many were philanthropic along with their greed.

Is it the 80's again?

Long live capitali... oh... erm...

It is just pure greed though. You can't argue that the world cup being free to air has hurt world football - it has always been that way at it has only gotten bigger and bigger. Could they get more for it? Yes. Would they get as many viewers? No. I hope Fifa don't do this kind of thing in Africa or South America, where for some kids who live on the streets, getting the chance to sit around a communal TV, see their idols and dream of one day being them is one of the few things for them to look forward. In a world where footballers get paid immoral amounts of money, FIFA and UEFA need to take a good long hard look at themselves.

They should be on free to air channels but if they are moved to Sky, at least the coverage and the punditry will be better. I can't stand Lawrenson, Chiles or Southgate.

Why are we (the English) not in charge of FIFA?

No-one would talk to us!

Good news - surely they'd want as people as they can to watch the major tournaments - not hide it on Sky.
