Fox92 Posted 20 July 2013 Posted 20 July 2013 RIP. Quite a shock really, I was watching 'Not the 9 o clock news' on Thursday night. Performed one of my favourite Christmas songs as well.
Leicesterpool Posted 20 July 2013 Author Posted 20 July 2013 60 isn't really that old! I heard he'd been ill for years and i think he at to cut down on some of his work.
Rincewind Posted 20 July 2013 Posted 20 July 2013 I have bad memories of that sketch. After watching it I had a phone call to say my eldest brother and missus had lost a baby due to a cot death. I'm sure it was the same day as I thought of it when hearing the news. Made me feel guilty for laughing at it.
BoneDog Posted 20 July 2013 Posted 20 July 2013 RIP We watched Morons from Outer Space Thursday night round our house especially for Mel's scenes.
rico Posted 20 July 2013 Posted 20 July 2013 NTNON and The Young Ones changed the face of British comedy, loved both programmes when I was a kid RIP Mel
Mike Oxlong Posted 20 July 2013 Posted 20 July 2013 One day Not The Nine O' Clock News Next day, The Nine O'Clock News Shame. Seemed a decent bloke.
Rincewind Posted 20 July 2013 Posted 20 July 2013 Naturally funny. His facial expressions was enough.
Guest Col city fan Posted 20 July 2013 Posted 20 July 2013 Very funny bloke was Mel Smith Alas Smith and Jones was great when they did their 'chat' over the table near the end of the show. Some of the faces he pulled were comedy classics.

Trav Le Bleu Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 Very sad news, of course famously directed the Mr Bean film. RIP mel Famous for directing Mr Bean?!!? I didn't even know he directed Mr Bean, but I still thought of him as famous, Just goes to show how different generations remember a person. NTNON was a class show in its day.
woddyuk Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Saw him and Griff live years ago. Laughed all evening. One sketch Griff walked on staff in bondage gear and can still see Mels surprised face. Great loss. With NTNON & the young ones they were the Pythons of the 80'w & 90's
BoneDog Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 I've got Wilt to watch tomorrow night. IIRC Mel played a detective in that and Griff is the Wilt bloke.
Rincewind Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 Only a couple of years younger than me. so I really grew up with him. There is no one really coming through the same mold of comedy the old school if you like. Is it an age thing? There are funny comics around but not in the same way. Not many double acts.
