Harry Redknapp: FA bosses 'do not have a clue'

Harry Redknapp says that Football Association senior officials do not have the knowledge required to choose the best England manager.

The QPR boss was overlooked for the role when Roy Hodgson succeeded former coach Fabio Capello in May 2012.

"I wouldn't trust the FA to show me a good manager if their lives depended on it," he wrote in his autobiography, serialised in the Daily Mail.

Redknapp, 66, says he holds no grudge against Hodgson after the decision.

But he insists he was the leading choice with England fans and players, claiming senior players texted him to offer him their support.

"This isn't about them giving the England job to me or Roy Hodgson, but English football being run by people who really haven't got a clue - and they get to pick the England manager," he said.

"Everyone said I was the people's choice, the only choice. All the senior players seemed to be up for me to get the job.

"I got quite a few text messages at the time from players saying they would love me to manage England: Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry.

"But the FA went for Roy Hodgson to be the England manager - a man who is more their cup of tea."

Redknapp, who was manager of Tottenham when the decision was made, said he wanted Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers - then with Swansea City - to be his assistant.

"My thinking on Brendan was this: if he can do it with players from the lower leagues at Swansea what can he do with Rio and Terry or Rooney and Gerrard?" he added.

"So when Tottenham played Swansea on 1 April, 2012 I pulled Brendan after the game and said that if all the speculation about me and England was true would he consider coming to the European Championships in the summer as my part-time coach?

"I told him I wanted England to play with as much technical ambition as Swansea. He was up for it.

"Some Tottenham fans might think I was distracted from my club job, but I can assure you the conversation took five minutes. And we beat Swansea 3-1 that day."

Redknapp's side won just twice in 10 matches following Capello's resignation, and he was sacked in June 2012 before taking over at QPR the following November.

I thought he didn't know how to text on a phone?

He's right.

And to be honest, at the time I wanted him ahead of Roy Hodgson. I think I still do. At least he wouldn't be defensive.

I couldn't imagine Redknapp being a 'yes' man though, just like Brian Clough back in his day. I imagine Roy is a total 'yes' man.

They did appoint a decent one in Fabio Capello. Yes the Germany game was a disaster (who subsequently beat Argentina 4-0, so we weren't alone), but that was it in his reign. Qualified comfortably twice and we don't know how he would've done in Euro 2012, we might well have learnt from that Germany defeat.

I don't see Redknapp as a step up from Hodgson really, they are the best of a very average and uninspiring bunch.

The FA are useless, yes, but he's an absolute twat who has no real ability to manage teams and instead just spends way beyond means to put together a side: he'd be completely useless at international level.

He's as dodgy as f~~k. If the FA had given him the job there'd be an in depth expose in the papers on his dodgy dealings the day before an important match. It'd be Terry Venables all over again.

Yes... Harry Redknapp, who wanted Neil Warnock to be England manager, has the right to say its the FA bosses who don't have a clue...

And thank **** that average, money blowing, leather-scrotumed saggy faced old ball bag didn't get the job.

Our FA might make some questionable calls but one of the best decisions it's made in recent times is going for Hodgson over the Ronsealed ****.

There's no decent English managers at all. I don't care what nationality they are as long as they get the job done. Don't get the whole 'we need an English manager' mentality at all.

The standard of English managers is absolutely appalling. When you consider by league position that Sean Dyche is the 5th highest ranked English manager in the country, then something's gone seriously wrong.

In fairness the whole of that world cup was a disgrace. We were truly awful, I was more annoyed by the Algeria match than the Germany one. |The Germany defeat was what we deserved and an inevitability the way we were going.

That said, I did think Capello was a good appointment at the time. His record earnt him the job.

The England manager should be English and Harry Redknapp is the best English manager ergo Harry Redknapp should be the England manager.

Even Alan Pardew's doing better than him.
