Fox92 Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Recently, I've been getting constant requests from friends on Facebook, I assume people on here have as well? Anyway, I downloaded it yesterday and just wondered if anyone else on here has? At first, I didn't get it. Thought it was like twitter (I don't have a twitter account though), but I'm warming to it now. I think it has the potential to reach something, maybe even challenge Facebook and twitter. Basically, you just sign in via Facebook (or sign up manually) and see local posts. For example, as I'm at uni in Manchester, so I see posts from people who live in the Greater Manchester area. I expect it to change when I go to different places... There are like different categories to post in, 'events', 'sport', 'news' etc. It's pretty good to see what's going on, such as people were posting 'oh xxx is on tonight at xxx'. People are saying it's just like Facebook and twitter, but I do kind of like it.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Argh not another one, this social networking thing has gotten out of control.
Darkon84 Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Just another way to harvest your location data and find out more about us. No thanks.
Finnaldo Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 I get invites every. fvcking. day. I swear the next person to invite me is going to get a hula hoop shoved up their arse.

Webbo Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 I get invites every. fvcking. day. I swear the next person to invite me is going to get a hula hoop shoved up their arse. The child's toy or the potato based snack?
Finnegan Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 I get invites every. fvcking. day. I swear the next person to invite me is going to get a hula hoop shoved up their arse. ....... wanna join Circle?
Fox92 Posted 9 December 2013 Author Posted 9 December 2013 Darkon I totally take your point. (Sorry, for some reason I can't quote on my PC). I've always been a private person, don't give too much away, but I've constantly been told over the past few months to sign up to these kind of sites by my lecturers and guest speakers who are in the industry I want to work in. I can use it to push myself forward, or advertise, which is what I'll eventually do. Sort of keep it professional on this and on Google+, but use my Facebook account for just people I know.
Fox92 Posted 9 December 2013 Author Posted 9 December 2013 Oh and I'm only asking if people have it, no need for people to get on their high horse.
StanSP Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Don't have it. Got first 2 invites to join it today. Not keen. Facebook and Twitter are enough for me.
Haydos Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 I had 4 or 5 today. I really don't need another way to see what a load of people I don't care about are having for lunch.
stevelcfc Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Been invited a million times now, but won't give in to peer pressure, mainly because it is yet another pointless way in which people which I don't particularly like can contact me. Plus I'm told it ufcks up your phone.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 I know this great local social networking app. It's called talking to people. I think Charlie Brooker (who I often think is a bit of a dick) made a very profound observation on his How Video Games Have Changed Our Lives, when he listed Twitter at no. 1. It is essentially a glorified version of The Sims, but with real people. Which begs the question... who's winning Foxestalk?
Fox92 Posted 9 December 2013 Author Posted 9 December 2013 Yeah I agree Trav in terms of going out and meeting people. I love doing that and for me social networking will never beat it. But the World moves forward doesn't it? I mean, when was the first dating agency? 1980's, 1990's? The Internet is a massive technology, one of the greatest inventions ever. Social media will just increase, especially considering professionals and company's use it too advertise. As I said above, they are used professionally now and it's a good place for people like me to show off their work/skills. Company's and agencies use social media to find out about clients and potential employees, hence stuff like Google+ and Twitter (although I haven't got Twitter) are good things to be involved in.

Don't you just get asked "WHAT F***ING TIME IS THIS!!??" when you talk to people?
Saxondale Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 The only thing more annoying than social media is those idiots who somehow [at least claim to] make a living from being a 'Business Social Media Expert' or similar. Absolute ani*. * Plural of anus

Xen Posted 10 December 2013 Posted 10 December 2013 Just so we're clear - the people inviting you aren't doing it consciously. The app requires so many permissions for you to download it, and then you sign in with facebook - It's inviting others on your behalf, and without your consent. I'm not sure of the accuracy of this, but I've even seen invitations from my mate who's never even touched the app. Quite possibly just scanning your friends list and generating false invites. Either way, the app could be absolutely amazing but if it's resorting to underhand/aggressive tactics to trick people into downloading it I'm staying clear.
MPH Posted 10 December 2013 Posted 10 December 2013 Are people aware that they can block this app and any other so that it stops sending requests? Top right corner of the app request is a little drop Down menu.. block it from there...

Low level customer facing jobs maybe. I doubt many employers for serious professional jobs are interested in reading anyone's tweeting.

No worries mate. I understand that for the use of business, things like this, and LinkedIn etc, can be pretty handy and almost essential for networking and stuff, so I agree that you should probably do it for the professional reasons, but as for the personal side of it...I'll be steering clear. Sounds like you've got the right idea.
Alexikokopops Posted 12 December 2013 Posted 12 December 2013 Sounds a bit similar to the networks that Facebook got rid of about 3 or 4 years ago
