Jamie Vardy

At least Vardy was willing to have a go. Today Nugent was doing anything he could to not take a shot on. He seems to have no confidence in open play ATM. I'd love to see GTF get a chance to start he holds the ball up so well and brings others into play around which we really need. Also strong in the air considering his lack of height. Impressed with his cameo today.

Despite missing two very good chances I still think he was our MOTM today. By far the most improved player on last season.

He's a changed player, and for me he's been our best striker this season.

But he needs to be taking his chances better, if he scored we would of taken all three points today, but instead we had to settle for one.

Unlucky not to score? They're chances he should be taking. Poor misses.

At least he's working his socks off for the team and creating chances.

Unlike David Nugent.

But obviously because he scored he won't be dropped.

To criticise Vardy's finishing is akin to those who slated Heskey for his goal record.

It's so clear that Vardy offers so much more to the team than just goals and his pace is such an asset. It's fine to have a 1 in 3 or 4 man up there if he's alongside someone else who's scoring the goals. As it happens, Nugent isn't (penalties aside) and  if you look at what else he's bringing to the table in terms of all round contribution at the moment it isn't enough. I think that should make clear where the criticism should be targeted.

Agreed. I think in January we need a real, natural finisher to partner Vardy with.

I think it is not even a vaguely similar criticism.

He's the perfect foil for a Nugent or a Wood to be more clinical. He'd be the first name on my team sheet at the moment, goals or not, his effort and application creates space for other players.

Who said anything about Nugent? Nugent is a better footballer than Vardy by far. Vardy just has a sublime work rate. I'd go as far as saying Nugent played better than Vardy today. Who created Vardy's chance that he missed in the first half today?

I can see were your coming from, his effort is good, but isn't a good enough striker at this level, for me.

When none of our strikers are being clinical, the foiling you say he's doing is wasted.

I still stick by my opinions he'd be better out wide, as he isn't clinical enough to be a main striker, but in a wide role I would agree one of the first name on the team sheet

When things are going well Vardy's deficincies can be washed away or ignored, when things get tough fingers will be pointed.

At the end of the day a turd is a turd no matter how you gloss it  (PS im not saying he is shit, just not good enough at the mo)

Not really his fault.

His work rate got him two goals against Milllllllllllllllllll.

Player who offers so much to the team with overall contribution of creating openings for others, acting as a foil to strike partner, being a nuisance to the opposition and working hard is criticised for not scoring enough goals when as a striker that's supposedly all you're there to do...

I think it's at the very least 'vaguely similar'

Well you've been on the backs of everyone who has said Nugent isn't playing well enough and today he was absolutely shite. Never in a million years was he better than Vardy today.

Vardy put himself about all game and hassled the opposition's defence no end.

In my book you can miss the odd chance (Vardy should have scored 2) if you work hard enough because you're creating space and opportunities for the team but Nugent doesn't look interested at the moment. He's lucky that Wood is injured and that he's got a couple more games till the window opens because he's not looked anything like the player he was and needs dropping.

If he wants a new contract, then he needs to earn one.

Absolute rubbish. Bar the penalty that Vardy won, Nugent did fvck all today. Ludicrous to suggest Nugent played better.

Today

Vardy 69% passing accuracy, 3 shots, 0 shots on target, 31 touches, dispossessed 1, turnover 4, goal 0

Nuge 75% passing accuracy, 3 shots 2 shots on target, 32 touches, dispossessed 2, turnover 0, goal 1

Failing to take into account the running Vardy did, winning the ball back, pressuring their players into mistakes thus regaining possession and setting up attacks.

Erm I think you'll find the 'turnover' stat covers that rather nicely.

The slight problem is that with a passing accuracy of 69% (67% for the season) when Vardy does regain possession the odds on him supply a team mate are significantly lower than if a team mate attempted the pass.

Didn't fault him for the other strikers not being clinical, but stand by the fact that I don't think he is good enough, and not a player to rely on for goals, but would keep him in the side out wide, only due to his pace and work rate, because one striker cannot be relied on for goals, and I think we all accept vardy will not be prolific or even a consistent scorer at this level.

I thought he was brilliant today. First chance was unlucky, header he's got to score though. He's never going to be an excellent finisher, but his all round play creates so much for us so often that I can forgive him.

He's not in the team to score loads of goals.

You're clinging onto a 6% difference for the day. That'd equate to 1/2 passes today. What's more worrying is Nugent's failure to win the ball back or at least attempt to (bar one ridiculous challenge in the first half where he was lucky not to be booked).

I'm not clinging on to anything, I don't particularly rate either player and certainly don't have a 'favourite'.

The only player with a lower passing accuracy than Vardy over the season is Kasper.

On average Nugent attempts 27 passes per game, Vardy attempts 18  and Kasper 24, so to only complete 67% of 18 passes is pretty shit.

Spot on.

This lad's work rate is phenomenal... but, when the chances come they have to be taken more frequently.

Believe me, when push comes to shove, the two missed today could be big misses.

Facts don't count when Nugent is involved.

Point proven that Nugent was better than Vardy today bar work rate.

If this was Vardy nothing would be uttered about it. Just the fact that he shown great determination "something Nugent doesn't do". lol.

Quite a large 'bar' considering there was little to choose between them otherwise, as they were both average.
