There is footage of the crash but the director chose not to show it, which indicates how bad the crash was/looked.

Well that's stupid.

There is footage of loads of drivers having horrific crashes in the past (including drivers being on fire or thrown out of the car and dying) etc that was shown on TV and is now viewable on Youtube.

I mean, who hasn't seen Senna's crash and head drop?

Hopefully Bianchi pulls through but for me they shouldn't censor it.

Watching this back on the BBC, two things.

One, they should have started the race an hour earlier, the rainy conditions making it so dark. Not enough light to race safely.

Two, the BBC commentary team are novices when compared with Sky. Brundle and his team right on it as the events unfolded. It took until the race was red flagged until Coulthard knew what was going on.

The FIA ought to have the final say on when races should take place if adverse weather conditions are forecast and shouldn't just have the power to give "recommendations" to the race promoters/organisers, whoever they are.

drivers have raced in worse than that and there werent many spins during the race.

The chances of a car crashing in exactly the same place as another a couple of laps later must be massive.

hope the lad is okay

Pictures below may be upsetting for some.

A picture taken of Jules seconds after the crash: http://i.imgur.com/ZAwsv0J.jpg

The top of the car took a huge amount of damage.

Another one showing his helmet: http://images2.corriereobjects.it/methode_image/2014/10/05/Speciali/Foto%20Gallery/17507881_MGZOOM.jpg

Seems to be a little dent.

Without wishing to sound insensitive, looking at that he's lucky it didn't take his head clean off. Seems like he hit it side on which might have saved his life.

Christ you weren't wrong about the BBC. Just catching the end of the highlight programme and they still had no clue Bianchi was out the race let alone where he'd crashed by the time the race was called off and the drivers had parked up!

More sad news, former F1 driver Andrea de Cesaris has died in a motorcycle accident.

Holds the record for most starts without a win. Remember him nearly winning at Spa in 1991 in the 7up Jordan .

There are now reports saying that Bianchi is suffering internal bleeding and is now on artificial respiration. He may have to have a second surgery.

I remember when Kimi had a massive off at... I forget the track, earlier this season, and one of the barriers was dented, so they refused to restart the race until the barrier had been fixed for safety reasons. So that's a safety issue, but having a massive tractor a few feet off the increasingly slippy track at the spot a car span off 2 minuted previously is fine? Imagine if a car had break failure like Hamilton did qualifying earlier this year, instant death. Things are not looking good for the lad from what I can gather, and seemed to have a bright future with Scuderia.

Always thought, and certainly not the only one, that the tractors coming on to the circuit is bloody dangerous, and in an age of the sport where some what seem quite stupid and pointless safety rules are in place, to have this going on most races it was always going to end in tears. Hopefully the lad will pull through.

It's pretty crazy that they would allow a truck to be stationed on the outside of a fast, blind corner, especially in these conditions. I'm so glad that no marshals were hit, we could've had multiple fatalities today. As a marshal, I would never go over the barriers in that situation.

It's always going to be a risk having rescue equipment in close proximity to the track. Remember some years since, when Charlie Cox cartwheeled off the track, (Thruxton)?? in a touring car race, and clipped a JCB that was there as part of some track improvement work!

Thankfully Cox survived, but his injuries finished his career. Trouble is, you need heavy recovery kit on hand to remove marooned vehicles. The option is to have the safety car deployed after each and every significant 'off'  !

I think that may be the only safe way. At the club I marshal at, a red flag is put out after serious crashes. Sure, it can be annoying, especially when there are multiple cashes in a race but driver/rider and marshal safety have to be the primary concern.

I think it's highly likely. They all take the same racing line, so if there's a puddle on it and they aquaplane, they're going to end up in the same place.

Fingers crossed he pulls through. He's lucky he wasn't decapitated. Kind of puts my bet I lost on the race into perspective.

Given the conditions and the corner in question, the safety car probably should have been out whilst they cleared Sutil's car, but hindsights a wonderful thing and accidents do happen!

It appears that both crashes occurred because of the amount of water on the track but given most of the teams were on intermediates and not full wet tires, im not sure how the people like Massa can say the race should have been stopped.

Similarly, with the start of the reason, for someone to come in and change straight to inters, it renders the question of what is the point of having full wet tires if they can't be raced on?

Edit: I should add i hope Jules is OK and can come back from this horrific accident.

His head hits and is pushed under the truck. This is worse than I expected tbh.

Raced SCCA for about 15 years (not sure if there's an equivalent over there, its Formula Ford for generally old people with no talent whatsoever). We tend to just leave the cars where they are when they stop or shunt out - if there is a severe risk to other drivers we full course or red flag the race to remove the vehicle and certainly before any slow moving equipment goes inside the fencing / barricades.

It's incredible to me that a crane, with that profile, was on the track with cars going by at any speed. The risk of Sutil's car in the tyre barrier was surely much less than having that vehicle in any way inside the barricades without the cars completely stopped or on the other side of the circuit behind the safety car.

Absolutely shocking.

Agreed that it is much, much worse than I expected and I'm frankly amazed he is still alive but have very, very little hope for any true recovery.

Hoping this doesn't come across as insensitive but I wonder what Marussia are going to do looking forward.

They have their first home race this weekend - do they race? Do they replace Bianchi?

I've no doubt Rossi will drive
