Stadium expansion

Still early days I know, but this was the owners plans when they took over, it mentioned they want to expan the stadium capacity to over 40,000 if we gain promotion to the premiership. I know currently we struggle to get high end of 20,000's but i'm sure if we keep the run going we will soon be seeing a full house at the KP.

We can sell out the big games in the premiership but you think we need a expansion? or 32,500 is more or less about right for our club if we gain promotion....still early days but I just remember what the owners 3 year plans were when they took over.

I think there is potential for our ground to reach around the 55k mark??

There is absolutely no point when we would only consistently come close to 40k if we were a 'Champions' League side

32500 is big enough for any team out of the premiership. With a few seasons in the premiership I could understand them bumping it up to 35000 but not 40000. If we were to come down again we'd look like Middlesbrough as people would clear off again.

Steady on mate we haven't got promoted yet, I don't think there's any need to rush in expanding the stadium. In my opinion we need to at least have a couple of years in the premier league before considering an expanding. Besides isn't 40,000 a bit much?! we don't want the scenario of having 10,000 or more empty seats every week and having to increase the away allocation.

No need, the only way we possibly would is if a billionaire took over and we were guaranteed Premier League football every season along with Europe. Even then I doubt we'd justify an increase up to 40k.

32k is fine, possibly 35k at a push.

Middlesboro, Wigan has a poor following, maybe the area is more deprived

I'd like it done, it would at least stop the stadium looking identical to every other 30 something thousand bowl in the country

Yet it would cost millions to build and it's money we would be unlikely to recoup unless we hit European football. Still at least it looks good...

Got to be done with financial justification or we are pissing money away.

Agreed. I think original plans were to made to increase the size to 42,000 (http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=824179c935503a0b087f70c6150aed7).

I thought the original plan was done with the expansion in mind.

But that is not it he say's it's his idea not a real plan.

If they do expand they have to double deck the Kop and east stand not just build up and back.

Then you will get some noise in the place for certain.

We'd just close the upper tier, surely?

No need to expand. Redeveloping SK1 to SK4 for a Safe Standing area when legislated for could potentially increase the capacity to 36-37k.

They should have little flaps in the seat and holes under each one filled with chemicals that you could can drop your guts and urinate into during the game so you don't miss any of the action. They have them in people's houses in poor countries so I don't see why not in a football stadium. I'm sick of missing goals when I'm having 1 of my 3 (on average) match time craps

Hows that work you still get the seated area you get now with safe standing.

Then they put up a bar and lock the seat back.

Safe standing will not increase capacity only expansion will increase it.

I obviously know we need to be in the Premeir League and need to make use of it, thank you, I am just saying It'd stop out stadium looking like an Identi-kit

The ratio of rail seats to a normal seat is 1.8, so you're nearly getting double the amount of seats/ standing capacity for the same amount of space.

I think it's only the east stand that can be expanded as a lot of the structural work and foundations that would be needed to support any expansion were done at the time the stadium was built.

Average attendance was 31k when we were last in the PL. Think there's definitely a case to be made for a small expansion if we look secure in the top division. Could probably be achieved by the introduction of Safe Standing though.

It would be a seriously stupid idea to expand the stadium unless we were showing promise in the prem for 3+ years. Firstly I can't see us selling that much more than 32,500, secondly we could get relegated at any point, thirdly the money would be better invested elsewhere.

Posted

There's never going to be a time when it would be safe to do this. Clubs like LCFC, under the present financial structure of the PL will always be one season away from relegation no matter how well they are doing.

You could argue if they are going to do it do it quickly whilst there's a good chance of filling it and getting some money back.
