Paki shop - OFAH

Recommended Posts

Posted

Got the complete box set of Only Fools and Horses for Christmas and have been enjoying watching them from the start. There have been 2 occasions so far (S1 1981) and S4 (1985) where Del has said 'Paki Shop'.

I was surprised to hear it even from an 80s show, I assumed that sort of thing was never said on TV (especially the BBC) even if it was commonly spoken among the general population.

It's funny how much it's changed in 30 years, nowadays there would be a huge uproar! In fact, I think it's edited out of TV re-runs now.

You ever seen Monty Python? ... I have their Flying Circus on DVD, and I highly doubt they'd get away with it now.

I have every episode of OFAH on DVD and I notice when I see them on TV (on Gold) that they cut parts.

You only have to look how times change though. I mean, the BBC used to ban music from getting played if it was drug related. Now look at music!

Times and attitudes change. Obviously certain aspects of shows will age better than others, but that doesn't detract from what remains one of Britain's best ever sitcoms.

In a good trigger moment he mentions Jimmy Savile during the seyance episode.

That's been cut out as well now

They censor drug references on the radio. So what exactly does this mean.

A lot of music seems to have direct references to sex and drugs, while certain artists swear a hell of a lot (I like Lily Allen but she is a prime example)... I didn't realise they censor drug references, I rarely listen to the radio anyway. However, they used to ban songs a lot for having a link to drugs when it wouldn't exactly be direct.

I guess that's how society changes throughout history. Same applies to television. As mentioned in this thread, programmes like Only Fools wouldn't be able to get away with some of the stuff they did. Same applies to Fawlty Towers, and as I mentioned, Monty Python. But those three programmes are among the best the World, let alone Country, has ever seen.

Are you kidding?  The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, NWA, Led Zeppelin etc... All hugely popular musicians in their time, all make drug and sex references in at least a couple of their songs, often more.  Drugs and sex in music is nothing new.

I Think I am the biggest fan in the country haha, I watch it everynight before bed and have done for about 3 years haha, It's quite sad really, but I've watched the box set what feels like 4000 times...

The episode 'From prussia with love'

Where a German Girl called 'Anna' goes to stay with Del and Rod as she has been kicked out of her home after becoming pregnant to the owner of the homes son, Spencer.

Del boy see's this as an opportunity as the girl would like to return to germany after the birth, So del boy decides to flog it to Marlene and Boycie as they are trying to have a "Chavie"

Long story short, The find out that the fathers parents were west indian, and boycie says at the end "Too right the deals off, THE BABY'S BROWN!!"

Wouldn't get away with it nowadays...

Even in the 80s the word paki wasn't really acceptable on TV. I suppose they got away with it because that's how a lot of people spoke in those days.

Oh yeah I know that. I initially posted without realising the radio censor particular lyrics.

Also, I'm trying to enhance the word 'direct link'... 'Baby let me follow you down' (Dylan) was banned. Where's the link? Likewise, 'Strawberry Fields' by the Beatles... I've just looked down a list of every song the BBC banned, and can't find direct links in certain songs.

I know it's hard to understand what in trying to say.

Baby Let Me Follow You Down is pretty blatantly all about getting some in.   As for Strawberry Fields, though it's clearly the product of drugs, there's no obvious lyric specifying illicit material or activity that I can make out.

Sorry that an over-eager MOD has merged my topic into this one, yes it concerned Only Fools but I didn't want it to derail the thread about Trig.

Thought I'd read some of the comments elsewhere. Now a lot of the thread doesn't make sense.

Well done that Mod! :appl:

It's a bit ridiculous really. Mentioning Jimmy Saville, really? Are we supposed to pretend he never existed? Is mentioning Hitler banned as well?

Obviously the show is outdated in some ways but I don't agree with censoring what is basically history. As far as British television history goes Only Fools and Horses is right at the forefront. It is what it is, it's an old show, and the characters are not real people. We don't have to agree with what they behave like (they were bloody crooks for god's sake), it's a comedy show, it's a story, it's not an opinion on races or TV presenters.

The characters are what they are, and the show is what it is. It's embarrassing to pretend that certain things didn't happen. Maturity is all about accepting the past and not necessarily letting it affect the present and future.

Even shows like Friends are cutting bits out now.

Didnt there use to be a TV programme called 'Mind your language'? Based completely upon racial stereotypes if I recollect? I think that was banned in the end?

Just what i was going to say. Amazing what people thought was ' funny' in the 70's.

I think the show itself is not racist but just contains racial humour imo

Alf Garnett was another classic 70s bigot, never found him funny the West Ham supporting twat
