leicsmac Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 Personally think Kerrigan will get taken apart. I'd much prefer Batty or Briggs in the side. I think they'd get taken apart too, and Batty is hardly a name for the future. Crap situation all round, really. We really do miss Swann.
RowlattsFox Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 A return for Bopara... Don't really follow county cricket but has Morgan scored runs this season or is he picked on name? Not seen him perform for England in any form for a while. Neither Cook or Bell have performed all summer, the youngsters need the senior ones to help them. Root, ballance, robson and even Ali have scored runs at some point this summer. Problem is at the minute they are all learning international cricket at the same time. Lack of a spinner has really upset the balance of the side.
StanSP Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 There was a time where I thought Root and Ali were there for the long haul. All's dismissal was nonsensical though. Utterly mind boggling. If you don't duck, you don't put your bat in the way of it . Very happy for Sharma. Some bitter, or at least biased (?) hate towards him just cos he tore through England. Granted England's batsman didn't help themselves. Also credit to Dhoni and Sharma for persisting with the short-ball tactic. Happy to concede X many runs but eventually it'll pay off and how it did. Jadeja running out Jimmy was unbelievable. A run that wasn't there and gifted Jadeja the last laugh.

Three matches left yet People are right to be annoyed, England shouldn't be being bounced out by a bowler of the quality of Ishant, he's very very average on a World stage and with a bit of patience on a day 5 pitch at Lords you shouldn't get yourself out. My team for the third test. Cook Robson Ballance Bell Root Morgan Buttler Broad Bresnan Anderson Kerrigan
Corky Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 Sharma is just average, and looking around Twitter Stan, apparently Indian supporters weren't too enamoured with him before this Test.

Jadeja running out Jimmy was unbelievable. A run that wasn't there and gifted Jadeja the last laugh. Not at all. Sharma is an average international bowler; Not particularly fast, doesn't do a great deal with the ball and his wickets cost him nearly 40 runs-a-piece which says it all. He didn't have to earn a single one of those wickets today. Complete brainless batting gifted him every one. If Prior had swayed out the way of the ball he hooked down the fielder's throat and seen off the next ball, it's very likely Dhoni would have taken the new ball and abandoned the short pitched approach. England only have themselves to blame and after winning the toss on that pitch, they should have gone a long way to winning the match on the first day, but some poor bowling wasted a golden opportunity.
Narborough_fox Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 Where's James Taylor in the terms of the international frame? Always liked him as a batsman and never really understood why he hasn't had a proper run in the test team. Still only 24 as well.
marko Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 Prior is taking a break. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/cricket/matt-prior-steps-away-international-3892888
Bobby Hundreds Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 Great player, our best ever wicket keeper batsman. Shame it had to end like this.
marko Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 Great player, our best ever wicket keeper batsman. Shame it had to end like this. He's said he's not retiring, but it'll be extremely difficult to come back and re-establish himself, especially if his replacement performs well.
Guest MattP Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 Thanks for the memories Matthew, Auckland will never be forgotton. Onwards and upwards, time for Jos.
StanSP Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 Great player, our best ever wicket keeper batsman. Shame it had to end like this. Genuine question - where does Alec Stewart rank for you? He was always struck me as a solid wicket-keeper batsman.

Guest MattP Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 As an aside has there ever been a bigger bunch of glory supporters in cricket than the Indians? Hardly see them all summer then they all turn up on a day when they might win. Worse than the Aussies.
Grandad. Posted 21 July 2014 Author Posted 21 July 2014 Ali Robson Ballance Root Taylor Morgan Buttler Jordan Plunkett Anderson Panesar Now that's a little drastic don't you think?
Hirsty The Blue 94 Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 Now that's a little drastic don't you think? Very much so, and rash as well. But our 'big experienced players' ie Cook, Bell, Broad, Prior are out of form. Let these boys have a break from cricket, go score a shedload or take wickets for their counties and come back to the test team refreshed next April if they impress. Just letting them flounder out in the middle is no good for us or them, and a pasting at the hands of the Indians could write off a few of their test careers. To change that original line up I would put Lyth in for Morgan and open him, dropping Ali down to 6. Only positive to take from the summer is the maturation of Root as a top class middle order batsman, could be our new Collingwood in being able to score tough runs. Ali and Robson have shown some promise but lack maturity and experience that will come from playing more test cricket,
Brainy Posted 21 July 2014 Posted 21 July 2014 So we're going to chop and change our number 6 again because he's not a good enough spinner? Bopara, Morgan, Bairstow, Root off the top of my head since 2009 alone? He's not in the team as a spinner who bats, he is a batsman that can bowl a bit of spin. I think people genuinely think someone was gonna walk in and carry on in Swann's footsteps. Not a chance. Wouldn't even be surprised if we were trying to tempt him out of retirement. So far he's not been any worse than some of the more experienced pros. On batting form alone this summer i'd say only Ballance and Root should have their name cemented for the final three tests. Robson and Moeen have done well, Moeen especially has stuck around in a few tests so far. Biggest problems at the moment are Cook and Bell, and there's no way they're gonna get axed. I think all four newbies (including Root even though he's been around a while) have scored hundreds this summer, and the two experienced guys haven't. Depending on the pitch for the 3rd test Cook Robson Ballance Bell Root Ali Buttler Jordan/Spinner Broad Plunkett Anderson The two batsmen most deserving to be dropped will not, understandably so I guess given the inexperience of the other batsman.
Hirsty The Blue 94 Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 Where's James Taylor in the terms of the international frame? Always liked him as a batsman and never really understood why he hasn't had a proper run in the test team. Still only 24 as well. Allegedly him and KP didn't get on at all, therefore whilst KP was in Taylor wasn't going to be. Not sure how many first class runs he has this season though.
Captain... Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 Not surprised about Prior, from what they were saying yesterday he is a broken man. Buttler or Bairstow? I'd pick Buttler he would give us some firepower and him and Morgan could give us some serious momentum lower down the order. The spinner situation is tough swann is irreplaceable but we need someone who can bowl a lot of overs and keep it tight give some respite to our seamers, Monty would be the obvious choice if it wasn't for his fielding and previous misdemeanors, Kerrigan got the yips, Tredwell, Briggs, A. N. Other, untried in tests. I would bring in Buttler for Prior, then pick a front line spinner if it is Monty then I would bring in Morgan for Ali, if it is an untried spinner I would keep Ali in for his batting and as back up spinner and we can go with spin from both ends. Then one of Plunkett, Stokes, Bresnan, Onions, Finn... for the third seamer, whichever is best suited to the Rose bowl conditions.
Guest Col city fan Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 Far better today, exceptional bowling performance. Do you still think that English cricket is in a good place? I think it's fookin dire.
Guest MattP Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 Do you still think that English cricket is in a good place? I think it's fookin dire. Did I say that? It's in a transitional period no doubt and we are clearly struggling to replace a group of high quality players we have lost. That happens when you lose a considerable amount of players from a team that were the best in the World. There is some talent there no doubt but it's going to take some time. The lack of a front line spinner is killing us, I feared this with so much limited overs cricket ,spinners nowadays seen to have to adapt to be containing bowlers rather than aggressive rippers and captains don't seem to want to give them fields to take wickets as well. We got some tough times ahead no doubt.
Guest MattP Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 U really can't understand the calls for Monty either, every county report this season seems to indicate he's finished.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 Genuine question - where does Alec Stewart rank for you? He was always struck me as a solid wicket-keeper batsman. 2nd best.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 22 July 2014 Posted 22 July 2014 The lack of a front line spinner is killing us. It's not harming SA and the Aussies too much mind, just think our quicks have lost the plot somewhat since last summer.
