Corky Posted 21 July 2014 Share Posted 21 July 2014 Ironic that its the more senior batsmen who have been most disappointing. Not going to rain today just have to hope for some sort of amazing rear-guard battle like against the Aussies in 2009 at Cardiff. It's still winnable with the right mindset. You can score five an over without taking risks, find the gaps, play it delicately to pick up twos, that's what the Indians did yesterday. 214 in 90 overs is not insurmountable. There's no way this is going to be a draw - if we are still batting by the end of the day it will mean we have won.

Priority has to be not losing a wicket though, get to lunch with Ali and Root still at the crease and another 60 on the board (going at 2 an over) then we are back in the game, 2 wickets down and a 100 runs on the board at lunch, then it is very finely poised, any more than 2 wickets down by lunch and it is game India, unless the Burnley Lara makes another cameo. Captain... Posted 21 July 2014 Share Posted 21 July 2014 From the sounds of it Prior needs to be dropped too, not just for form, but sounds like he is a broken man physically. Bell never has been captaincy material, neither is Jimmy, Broad is the only possible choice of the current squad, which is worrying. Does anyone else think Root is being groomed like Cook was to be captain, obviously in about 5 or 6 years time, and we are destined to make the same mistake over and over again. Captain... Posted 21 July 2014 Share Posted 21 July 2014 Forgot about Morgan, with no more KP it would be great to have an explosive batsman like Morgan down the order there isn't really anyone in the team that can dominate the bowlers. So Morgan in as captain for the ODIs, and potentially back into the test squad as vice captain, could work, I think it would take the pressure off Cook having someone other than Prior as vice captain with a bit of experience, and Prior has to focus on his glove work if he wants to retain his place. Bobby Hundreds Posted 21 July 2014 Share Posted 21 July 2014 Eoin Morgan for VC and possible captain is a good shout, somewhat unfairly never been given a good crack at the test side. Maybe we just need to get a specialist captain in the side a la Mike Brearley. Speaking of Morgans, I wish Piers Morgan would find himself on the wrong end of an American gun atrocity and stop with his incessant KP arse-licking and England derision. It's painful stuff. I'd set Brett Lee on him again.
surrifox Posted 21 July 2014 Share Posted 21 July 2014 Give me a credible candidate to take over and we'll talk, but at the moment apart from Broad in the T20s not a single person with a central contract has any captaincy experience. sadly though, Cook himself has no credibility as captain either. He is by far our most accomplished opening batsman and we need him to go out and do that. He is burdened by a record of successive defeats in test series as captain and something needs to be done to change the approach of the team. At the moment England are losing all the key sessions in matches ( the match (and quite possibly the series) may be lost as a result of the immediate post lunch session yesterday) Since you have mentioned Broad he appears to have quite forthright views on field placings etc when he is bowling to the point where he appears to be overruling Cook and in a way undermining him. You are certainly right that there is a lack of candidates but then the central contracts system appears to militate against bringing in successful players with captaincy credentials from the county circuit into the cosy set up. Brett Lee must have been bowling off about 18 yards for some of those deliveries

Captain... Posted 21 July 2014 Share Posted 21 July 2014 Fvcks sake Ali, that spoilt my prediction, Root showed how important this is and just wore the short one, stand there and take it. Good start to the day, if we had got to lunch with no more wickets down and 70 runs on the board it would have been perfect. Now we need to get through the new ball unscathed no room for error. Grandad. Posted 21 July 2014 Author Share Posted 21 July 2014 We still have 4 batters who have the ability to score runs and Plunkett and Anderson have proven they can bat and dig in. Not a lost cause yet.

Corky Posted 21 July 2014 Share Posted 21 July 2014 This shouldn't be over, we still have plenty of batting. Just show some mental strength, front it up and don't look for excuses. Those two appeared to bat pretty comfortably for 30 overs this morning bar one ball so make them work for the wickets.
