As an old Bedfordian I struggle to criticise Cook, but although some of his captaincy has been made to look worse by dismal displays by a lot of his team mates, on top of the fact he had to somehow deal with the departure of two very influential players in Trott and Swann, he simply has to go. I miss the old days where the pressure was off him and he could just bat. But those days are long gone, and as long as the burden of the captaincy is on his shoulders he's never going to return to such form.

His involvement in the banishing of KP and his refusal to give in should not be regarded as 'bold' it should be regarded as stupid. A critic put it well yesterday when he said 'he only sees what he sees'. It's as if he cannot see his form crashing infront of his eyes. It's as if he can't see that he's only picking his mates. He's a wonderful batsmen on form and a decent slip fielder, but a terrible captain. Piers Morgan is a total bellend but he's right. English cricket needs a rethink and they should build the team around our best, exciting players. To sack KP is absolutely outrageous, and something needs to be done before it's too late

This bring back KP campaign is utter shite. In the last 2 years prior to his 'sacking' he averaged 29, not exactly set the world alight. People say form is temporary etc and he has scored 8000 test runs, but so has a certain Alistair Cook who seems to be public enemy number 1 at the moment,

Add that the fact to he is a complete knob, the amount of fallouts he has had at Hampshire, Notts, England (1st and 2nd time). As well as Strauss calling him a cvnt, and he seems like the most calm and mild mannered chap of all time. If Andrew Strauss calls you a cvnt, you probably are one.

Finally he will be 35 before the next time he would be playing a test match after this series, it is not exactly a forward thinking move looking at the future to bring him back for 18 months, 2 years maximum to take up a spot of one of the younger players like Ali who can grow into a fantastic player.

Cricket is very much a game that works in cycles, we were very entertaining under Vaughan, very successful but dull under Strauss and now feeling the effect of that by losing the backbone of our side over the last year. The Aussies were really shit for a few years, and it took a rebuilding job after the old guard (McGrath, Warne, Ponting, Hayden, Langer etc) retired to get back to the top. We just need to move on from the past, instead of clinging onto it by looking to bring back a has been show pony.and build for the future. My only question is whether Moores is the bloke to take us there.

This is spot on, he spent his last 18 months in an England shirt playing reckless shots and holing out to long on out for 20 odd runs.

Totally agree about Moores too, it all seemed a bit 'jobs for the boys' when he got re-employed.

Fit right into this team then...

KP clearly isn't the answer, unless he can get his head down and score some big runs in County Cricket, but even then his age and attitude make it a backwards step, unless we bring him in as captain. Him and Moores worked so well together last time.

Not long to go now, just another year until we are turned over by the Aussies and we can shove Moores out and get Lehmann in

KP got a trademark glitzy 20 odd in a glorified game of baseball, which is his 2nd top score in 10 innings.

It is clear he doesn't want to play test cricket again, else he would be getting his head down and scoring runs in the long format for Surrey. Instead he is happy to milk the cash cow, and fair play to him as very few cricketers earn as much as him. Just wish his annoying mouthpiece Piers Morgan would fvck off.

Impressed you got all that from me saying Straussy boy was up KP's arse..but well done, stoked up the debate.

I like KP, couldn't give a toss about his off the field stuff (rose tinted specs) because he's a bloody good batsman when he's got his eye in. Fair play I don't think he scores as many runs has his should in all formats, which is harsh because I think he's scored a fair few in all forms of the game to be fair to him, but he is just that good.

People can sit there and say he's bad for engkand, he's bad for the team as much as they like but England are a better batting team when KP is coming in at number 4. England went through one of their most successful periods ever whilst KP was in the side so he couldn't have been that bad for the team!

He's an abrasive personality, he gets under people's skin, I think that's why I like him so much, he's an arrogant so and so but he's good at it, and he winds the opposition up as well which I think is nothing but a good thing.

Whether he plays test cricket or any form of cricket for England again or not is irrelevant. He's been a great servant to England over the years and I respect him for that.

Piers Morgan knows what he's doing, being in the profession of journalism myself I know how easy it is to stoke up a debate and he's had more practise at that than anyone. I don't think he believes what he's stating half the time, he's just stirring the pot for a reaction.

I largely agree, he has been a great cricketer for England, and has played a few of the most memorable innings I have ever seen an Englishman play, and it is no coinscidence that when he was at his peak we were the best team in the world. But like you I feel he could have been more. I think he played on his reputation too much by going out and attempting to play every shot he has every innings and feeling he has to entertain, which was sometimes at the detriment of the team scenario.

I just don't see how he can seriously come out in the media and say he wishes to be selected again to play in test matches for England. If he did he would be netting and playing regular 4 day cricket. instead of just turning out to play a happy slap T20 game now and then. Even then it is not as if he is looking in any sort of form in these games either, so if he really took attempting to play for England again seriously he would have played county cricket instead of collecting millions playing in the IPL.

Of course Morgan is riling up a debate, but it is constantly undermining anything that England are attempting to build. KP should really announce his retirement and move on from England to collect his money in T20 across the world for the next few years and let England move on without Cook, Moore et al's being pressured by his shadow and media storm that follows him.

Come on mate...does Kevin Pietersen really strike you as the sort of bloke who thinks he's got something to prove? Does he bollocks.

I know exactly what you're saying and to an extent, if it was any other player who had been dropped on the basis of form, you'd be absolutely right. However KP has been ousted out due to politics which have taken place behind the scenes, nothing to do with his performances for England. Everyone knows he's still one of the best batsmen in the world and could still more than capably do a serious job for this England side.

You answer your own point to an effect, he himself knows he's good enough to play for England, he's got nothing to prove to anyone, his stats tell you everything you need to know, so why should he go out and fight for his place in the test team?

I'm sure he has come out and said he wants to play test cricket again, who wouldn't? But no amount of runs he gets in the championship are going to be of any use to him regarding England, he's not wanted and he knows that. So what's he going to do? Strain himself and go out and field for 160/170 overs over 4 days and bat a bit, or go out, whack a few, make a shed load of money, be done in a couple of hours and still be home In time to put his kids to bed? I know which one makes more sense to me.

KP is clearly a difficult person to play with, but he was a great batsman. You can forgive him being an arse if he is winning matches, but he has not delivered a match winning innings since Nov 2012, he has played 14 tests since then.

Do you stick with him hoping for a ever rarer flash of brilliance? Or do you bin him off and give younger players a chance.

His form since being sacked by England has been awful. He was terrible in the IPL, and hasn't scored very well for Surrey in the T20 either and hasn't played any county matches.

Thanks for the memories Kev but your time is up.

Great start. Hope they can push on.

Weird having a Test match start on a Sunday.

I saw SSN were reporting on poor ticket sales for this test and i'm not sure who they were interviewing but basically he was putting the poor sales down to the fact it is starting on a Sunday as opposed to it being due to England being poor of late. I would have thought a Sunday start would have boosted sales, as less people at work, more people have a chance to go - especially for the 1st day.

I don't know what they are charging but I would think it's more to do with England being poor of late and/or price.

Well it makes sense to have at least two of the days over the course of the weekend. Nothing like an all dayer on a Test match Saturday.

Assuming they're trying to appeal to the fact it's school holidays with this one.

Ticket sales might be poor due to the fact there are already southern-based Tests at Lord's and The Oval in this series too.

Shame he couldn't get to a hundred, hopefully Ballance will.

Great to see the crowd give him a standing ovation, whatever you think about his captaincy he should still be considered as a fine batsman who is close to being England's top scorer in Test cricket.
