I am Rod Hull Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Put a fiver on India at 16/1 a few minutes before Cook got out. It may not come in but them there odds were too good to leave alone.
Matt Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Well done to Cook, can't complain, but one swallow doesn't make a summer and he needs to build on that.
purpleronnie Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 but one swallow doesn't make a summer My last gilrfriend thought otherwise.
surrifox Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Shame he couldn't get to a hundred, hopefully Ballance will. Great to see the crowd give him a standing ovation, whatever you think about his captaincy he should still be considered as a fine batsman who is close to being England's top scorer in Test cricket.
Grandad. Posted 27 July 2014 Author Posted 27 July 2014 Quite glad he got out before the ton, in a weird kind of way. Credit to Cook, he dug in massively and carved out a good innings, but if he hit a ton a lot of people would of been like "he's back in the runs, that's why he is captain blah blah.." for me this isn't job done, he is still not in the greatest of form, hopefully this 95 will push him on for the rest of the series and realise he still has a lot to do!
Grandad. Posted 27 July 2014 Author Posted 27 July 2014 Fully expect Olympiacos to beat us tonight with how our pre-season is going.
StanSP Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Fully expect Olympiacos to beat us tonight with how our pre-season is going. Cook should definitely go if that's the case. That'll be the final nail, I think.
Grandad. Posted 27 July 2014 Author Posted 27 July 2014 Cook should definitely go if that's the case. That'll be the final nail, I think. Haha. And I wonder why I get banned from the Leicester section..
Captain... Posted 28 July 2014 Posted 28 July 2014 I think it made a big difference for Cook to just come out and bat, without the pressures of coming in after a day in the field. He had nothing on his mind other than putting bat on ball. There was no scoreboard pressure or missed chances to weigh on his mind. In the last 3 tests we batted second and he failed. It would have been nice for him to get the century but really the score is enough to just quieten down the detractors, but the real key will be winning the test after a good start, which means no batting collapses, a good attacking display with the ball and if they are getting little from the pitch, then this is where a good captain finds ways of getting wickets, breaking partnerships, that includes giving Balance and Root a twirl, if they go after them then they might get a top edge going for a big slog. We also can't just bowl Broad and Jimmy into the ground, we need short sharp blasts of aggressive bowling from those 2 and Jordan. Not long spells of tired dross. Woakes is an odd selection, unless he has been brought in to be the workhorse, as we don't seem to trust Ali to tie up one end. Will be interesting to see what Cook does, he may be a little more adventurous after getting a score in the first innings.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 28 July 2014 Posted 28 July 2014 Kudos to Cook for choosing to bat mind, Dhoni sounded like he would've had a bowl which would've turned out to be a howler of a decision. Nothing in this pitch at all.

Captain... Posted 28 July 2014 Posted 28 July 2014 Does anybody else want to see a few wickets to fall so we can unleash Buttler on this attack. Or would anyone promote him up the order see if he can take the game away from India playing with some intent. It won't be easy to take 20 wickets and we should give ourselves as much time as possible.

No. Knowing our luck this summer, Buttler would come in, caught on the boundary for 6 and then we have a mini collapse, just keep going.
Captain... Posted 28 July 2014 Posted 28 July 2014 No. Knowing our luck this summer, Buttler would come in, caught on the boundary for 6 and then we have a mini collapse, just keep going. Fair enough, that wicket changes things, rotten decision that exactly why we should have DRS. Let's see if Root plays a bit more positively with the pressure off.
marko Posted 28 July 2014 Posted 28 July 2014 Absolute stinking decision! Missed it by a bus ride. It's time for the ICC to impose DRS on India and the BCCI. The sport's governing body can't be held to ransom any longer on the matter.
Grandad. Posted 28 July 2014 Author Posted 28 July 2014 I know Ballance has hit a big score but that is an absolutely shocking decision. Dhoni is an embarrassment as captain, for such a good cricketer this lack of DRS and appealing at everything in mass is embarrassing the sport.

Agree, if they have doubts over hawkeye, then that could be optional, but for decisions like that it is so clear nonsense to not use it.
Grandad. Posted 28 July 2014 Author Posted 28 July 2014 156 or not, the commentators should not be allowing that to go unnoticed, shocking umpiring that.

Well they should do what this journalist did and go to Sony and see it first hand. http://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2014/jul/15/hawk-eye-england-india-drs Far more accurate than the human eye.
purpleronnie Posted 28 July 2014 Posted 28 July 2014 Yep, but it works both ways, bell should have been given out when he was on 0.
StanSP Posted 28 July 2014 Posted 28 July 2014 I hate that India don't use DRS - paves the way for awful decisions - but it's not like every decision goes India's way. England have some luck too.
marko Posted 28 July 2014 Posted 28 July 2014 Yep, but it works both ways, bell should have been given out when he was on 0. The difference is that the Bell one was fairly marginal - even Dhoni was off miles down the leg-side. Ballance didn't get anywhere near that delivery.
purpleronnie Posted 28 July 2014 Posted 28 July 2014 The difference is that the Bell one was fairly marginal - even Dhoni was off miles down the leg-side. Ballance didn't get anywhere near that delivery. But it would have been appealed and the correct decision made so it's all the same.

There is no excuse whatsoever for them not to use it. The predictive element of Hawkeye is proven to be accurate to under one millimetre at the stumps - theree is no way a human eye can match that. Even if India don't want it, England should still be able to utilise it and India just have to go with the umpire.

I agree but just find it interesting that were screaming for it now but not when bell was not given out.
