If England do bowl us out for that amount, they'll quickly add another 150-200 and put us back in to bat again to chase 300(roughly).

We'll be making you chase considerably more than 300.

If we put you in before tea tomorrow 300 in 125 overs would be easily achievable.

Has the follow on been avoided yet?

Need to clear up the tail early morning then give the bowlers a couple of hours rest before going again.

Worried we'll run out of time.

This is a tough pitch for the bowlers, to get 8 wickets when we have one seamer injured in Broad, one ineffective in Woakes, one erratic and wayward in Jordan and a part-time spinner is no mean achievement.

We'll miss Anderson so much when he's gone.

I think Jimmy is v underrated even with his stats. By far and away the best English bowler of the last 20 years and probably in the top 3 English of all time.

Worst case scenario we need to be give ourselves at least 100 overs to bowl at the Indians with 350 on the board. No point in being conservative with the deceleration and setting them a whopping score. Needs to be a tempter of no more than 4 an over which will tempt the Indians to win the game, not just block out.

Thing is they don't need to win the game, we do, a draw and they are 1-0 up with 2 to play, whatever the scenario when they bat again they won't be chasing the win, that is why I would enforce the follow on if we have a chance. We have 4 seamers, one half decent spinner, 2 part timers in Root and Balance (who looked pretty tidy at Trent Bridge) keep rotating keep the players fresh, 90 overs in a day, 20 each between the seamers and 10 from the spinners is hardly a massive ask, if it starts to turn then we can look to use Ali and Root more.

Obviously depends on the weather and conditions and how long it takes to get the next 2 wickets, if Broad and Anderson are steaming in first thing and getting swing with the still relatively new ball, then I would also be more inclined to bowl again, if they are getting nothing from the ball and pitch looks flat, then you might as well bat again and hope for some assistance tonight/tomorrow.

Big call Cook, but first lets get those 2 wickets.

Well, Dhoni out for 50 in the first 10minutes. That's the end of that. Unless Pankaj and Shami want to upset the apple-cart and get a century-odd stand lol

Honestly can't see why we haven't enforced the follow on here. A draw is a bad as a loss in this situation and surely bowling again maximises the chances of victory?

The only reason I can think of is because Anderson and Broad are knackered and need a break, but they've had a nights rest and got the final two wickets quickly enough this morning...

Got to get a move on then. Need to be bowling by middle of the afternoon session (would give us 135 overs to bowl them out) so 35-40 overs to work with. Need at least 150 from those and 200 would be ideal.

Still think the follow-on should be enforced pretty much all the time unless there is a really, REALLY good reason not to. Honestly don't get the recent trends of teams not doing it.

Well done Jimmy. Great bowling on a batting pitch and a five-fer on your birthday. Happy birthday.

239 lead as it stands before England bat again. Wonder when they'll declare. At lead of 400? How much rest will they give the bowlers?

Could be Cook's test if this decision proves to be the right one.

You've basically got to bat very quickly and not get too bogged down and gradually get runs. It's effectively one-day mode which gives me confidence we could chase something big.

We shouldn't be fvcking batting again in the first place.

Can anyone give me a good reason why we are?

There probably is no good reason mate.

Cook wanting to make sure he bats India out of the game, the fact this is such a quick grueling series he doesn't want to burn Broad and Jimmy out (maybe Jimmy won't be banned), give himself and Robson some care free time at the crease..

If India only need 3 an over, say 400 lead in 130 overs then with India's batting line up they may be tempted. If they win the test then they can't lose the series which would be a big carrot.

No chance what so ever they could chase 450 down mate.

Not with Jimmy Anderson in his form and Ali/Broad bowling with confidence.

If the front-line seamers weren't as good, then I'd heavily disagree (I agree with you at the moment). Let's just see how England's innings goes now. So much speculation and it's turning in to a brilliant test-match!

I don't think they will, but we need to leave them with a situation in which if they bat out the overs they can win the game. No point putting loads on the board with not much time.

India are already out of the game, and I'm not sure how much rest 4 hours is going to change things for Broad and Jimmy in terms of their overall bowling ability in the future.

Just think the drawbacks vastly outweigh the benefits.

If India only need 3 an over, say 400 lead in 130 overs then with India's batting line up they may be tempted. If they win the test then they can't lose the series which would be a big carrot.

You could invert that though, if they follow on, they could be tempted to play shots to try to set England a target of some kind, and even if they shut down nearly 6 sessions is a long time to survive.

Given England got us out so early, I'm surprised they didn't make us bat. There's no way we would have made a challenging target for you and I don't think Anderson/Broad would have got that tired. There's enough bowlers in the England side to look to anyway.

We would probably have only reached your first innings total with our 2 innings and could only see England needing only 50-100 runs to win the match after our follow-on.

Anyway, I'm speculating again and it's all pointless lol.

Sorry Stan..

But I don't know which Indian cricketer infuriates me the most?

Jardeja, Dhawan, Dhoni and Sharma are all wankers.
