Vicki Vixen Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 Southampton is a long way from the peak district. I'd be surprised if he went anywhere that wasn't commuting distance from Sheffield, unless its an offer he can't refuse. He seems too attached to the area.
bluebeau Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 I don't think Nigel would need reminding that he saved Southampton from relegation, only to be sacked as soon as the season ended. Their loss was our gain because he joined City & has done a great job since. I also think that he would be hard pressed to find a better chairman & vice chairman than the owners of City. They seem to be behind him & supporting him 100%. Nigel will not be leaving City, so let's just relax & watch out for the new talent that he will be bringing to our football club.
kyleolly Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 Thanks for everything Nigel, Welcome back Neil Lennon!!
Richard Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 If you honestly think he would, then stick a few quid on 66/1 http://www.betfred.com/Sport?events=3326106.2
Fox in the Forest Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 Less money? Huge budget? What evidence is there to support that? If he goes to Southampton he gets one of the best youth set-ups in the country, a group of incredibly talented young players who unlike ours are proven in the Premier League (and he could move three or four on for more than we'd get for our entire squad if he wanted to). Anyone who thinks we're a better job than Southampton right now is kidding themselves. First post, so please be kind! ;-) Regarding youth set up's, just take a look at this seasons's U21 Premier League Development Squad table: http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/matchday/barclays-u21-premier-league-tables.html?paramYouthStage=NATIONAL Suggests that our older youth set up is just as good as Soton & with Rudkin heading up the Academy & Beaglehole running the U21's and the investment being made show's that we're very serious about our youth. So far has produced: King, Schlupp, Moore & Hopper (although yet to be proven). I can see a few others stepiing up & getting loans to L1/Ch teams in the coming seasons - Panayatou, Blyth, Pearson etc. We've also made the cut to the top division next season (and not just "scraped through") as the 22 splits into 2 leagues with relegation/promotion. The young future is looking good for the longer term. Not quite sure why NP would want to abandon this project; especially as his son is one of that squad (& recently on loan to Carlisle). It''s the U18's that need working on next (finished bottom of the U18 PL - Soton mid table).
ronnup Posted 27 May 2014 Author Posted 27 May 2014 We are not on par with Southampton for youth set up. Bale Walcott Ox Shaw
LCFC31 Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 We are not on par with Southampton for youth set up.BaleWalcottOxShaw We created Taft.
Fox in the Forest Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 We are not on par with Southampton for youth set up. Bale Walcott Ox Shaw No, maybe not yet, but we're heading in the right direction & the addition of Barmby in the last week or so shows our intention even further. I remain really positive about our Youth & now we've cemented that Cat1 status; the next 2-3 years could really be interesting. Taft. Ha!

The point still stands though, Southampton are bringing through very talented young players who in a lot of cases wouldn't look out of place at the biggest clubs in the world, we've brought through a few players who might cut it in a Premier League relegation battle and a shit load who will go no higher than League One football. I'm not saying it can't improve, but to a manager who has limited allegiance to either club Southampton are a much better option, and that's a huge factor.

leicesterisme Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 Did they not sack him after he had kept them up? I'm sure he wont forget that.

I don't think I agree, Mark, primarily because you aren't looking at the whole picture. Since Liebherr Snr's death, tensions had been very slowly building between Cortese (largely responsible for the club's rise, with Liebherr's money) and Liebherr's daughter, Katharina. Katharina has reportedly no interest in football, has ousted Cortese, has let the manager leave, is selling all their best players and has shown no indication she'll invest. It's exactly the sort of mess Nigel would likely want to avoid, being a fairly pragmatic guy with previous (Mandaric) who now has a very settled board. If Top and Vichai deliver to expectation, we could very well be the new Southampton and they could very well be the next Leeds. A lot depends on Katharina Liebherr's management of the club over the next few months.
Hack Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Anyone think they'll be interested in Nige? And would he go? Yes.He has to be a candidate if he is not yet signed by us.
Hack Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 That job has David Moyes written all over it IMO. That is a good call. Or Spurs original target Frank De Boer

I think it's a bit early to decide that no money is going to be invested, or to say that the money from sales won't be reinvested. He only left a few months ago didn't he? Has she even had a transfer window? Maybe it would be a bit of a risk, but it strikes me that taking over a club that has already established itself in the Premier League and that should be able to continue to pump out players that we could only dream of singing would be a wise move.

I've just got to jump on this (one of my pet hates, nothing personal! ). If you are referring to the likes of Luke Shaw, Lallana, Ward-Prowse, Callum Chambers et al, then this is simply not true. I look at the Southampton squad and NO ONE - not even the more seasoned pros - would be good enough for the likes of Real, Barca, Dortmund, Bayern, PSG or Juve. We have a wonderfully biased view of home-grown talent here in England. There is nothing wrong with that in principle, but the cold hard truth is that apart from a very few outstanding talents (Barkley stands pretty much alone in that category), there is a superior quantity (and quality) of talent being developed outside of these shores due to the grassroots set ups and the talent pathways that they have. Why do you think we have so few English players in the Premier League while practically no English players playing in any of the European leagues? Goodness me, even the FA have finally accepted this and are genuinely trying to make things better. Ok, their ridiculous reserve league idea is daft, but the point is that even the governing body is spending time and effort in figuring out how to improve things. Don't get me wrong, I wholly agree that Southampton is a shining light among the Premier League and one of the best clubs when it comes to bringing through "yoof" - but to claim that they have a conveyor belt of players capable of playing for Champions League-winning teams is rather odd.
Brizzle Fox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 According to the Independent they want Poyet. Has some sort of release clause in his Mackems contract who will probably struggle again next year. Also still lives down south
Ric Flair Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 14/1 for the drop. Lallana, Shaw and a few others all leaving.
Master Fox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Feel sorry for them. The monopoly of the Premier League continues. It's a bit like when MON left us for Celtic. If Top is serious about us ever breaking the upper 5 satan club strangle hold, then we can't let clubs like Man Utd or Spurs do what they've done to Southampton. Back to back promotions then brilliant in the prem only for w4nker clubs to ruin it. Sad times.
Guest Col city fan Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 He'd be mad not to go to Southampton if given the chance. Have to agree.

If we do alright this season then it's always a battle the 2nd season to maintain it and even if you do then you end up in the same boat as Southampton. Don't worry though, we'll go straight back down so we won't have such injustices!! Hahahaa
Babylon Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Don't worry though, we'll go straight back down so we won't have such injustices!! Hahahaa Problem is then we'll have wank like Hull picking off our best players... rather succeed and have £20m bid for players from United
