davieG Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 More than 650 suspected paedophiles have been arrested as part of a six-month operation targeting people accessing child abuse images online. The National Crime Agency (NCA) said the 660 arrested included doctors, teachers, scout leaders, care workers and former police officers. More than 400 children have been protected as a result, the agency said. Arrests were made across the UK and the majority of those held had no previous contact with police. The NCA said 39 were of those arrested are registered sex offenders. Charges already brought range from possessing indecent images of children to serious sexual assault. The NCA stressed that none of those arrested is a serving or former MP or member of the Government. Examples of those arrested include: A doctor, who has been charged and remains in custody over images of child abuse A grandfather who had access to 17 grandchildren, two of whom alleged abuse by the man. He was taken into custody A foster carer, who was caring for a 12 year old, was arrested. He had no previous convictions or allegations of offending 'Dark net' NCA deputy director general Phil Gormley said the crackdown involved images accessed via the so-called "dark net". The "dark net" refers to content that does not appear in normal search engines and users often use virtual currencies to avoid detection. According to the Internet Watch Foundation, less than 1% of its content is hosted in the UK. Mr Gormley said sex offenders should understand they cannot avoid detection while using the internet, even the dark net. And he added: "Some of the people who start by accessing indecent images online go on to abuse children directly. So the operation is not only about catching people who have already offended - it is about influencing potential offenders before they cross that line. "We want those offenders to know that the internet is not a safe anonymous space for accessing indecent images, that they leave a digital footprint, and that law enforcement will find it." The investigation involved 45 police forces across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and saw "unprecedented level of co-operation," the NCA added. Officers have searched 833 properties and examined 9,172 computers, phones and hard drives. Targeted offenders Chief Constable Simon Bailey, the national policing lead for child protection and abuse investigations, said: "During this operation, we've targeted offenders accessing child abuse images. "Police must continue to use a range of investigative techniques targeting all forms of abuse if we going to protect children and bring offenders to justice. "Chief officers are committed using all the tools available to them because nothing is more important in policing than protecting vulnerable people". Claire Lilley, head of online safety at the NSPCC said the operation had rescued children from abuse. But she added: "Industry has to find inventive ways of blocking the flow of such horrendous pictures which are only produced through the suffering of defenceless children - many of who are not even old enough to go to school. "So while this operation must be rightly applauded we should view it as yet another warning sign that far more needs to be done if we are to stem the sordid trade in these images, which are often used by those who go on to abuse children."
Bayfox Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 Don't know why but I read this as 606, must be a stuart hall thing.
Guest MattP Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 All I want to know is when 'Kitty' is being brought in, we all know he's done it now go and get him.
MikeyT Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 It's paedogeddon. This made me laugh far more than it should have.
Alf Bentley Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 It's paedogeddon. Biggest massacre since Paedoloo, the occasion in 1819 when dozens were killed or injured while soliciting minors in a Manchester public toilet. I apologise, but blame Bovril as a bad influence.
Darkon84 Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 All I want to know is when 'Kitty' is being brought in, we all know he's done it now go and get him. This. It's glaringly obvious. I get the feeling that with someone like that, as with Savile, it probably won't come out until his death. He perhaps knows too many people that he could drag down with him.
Webbo Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 For legal reasons, no naming names nor making accusations please folks.
Rincewind Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 Yes your highness. Yes seriously it could be a bit dodgy for us.
Guest MattP Posted 16 July 2014 Posted 16 July 2014 Well I suppose it keeps Sharon's husband Dave out of the papers who has just been told he has to pay the bedroom tax. Of course you won't read about that in the mainstream papers. There are none as blind as those who can't see, it reminds me of the two weavers who promised an Emperor a new suit of clothes.
davieG Posted 16 July 2014 Author Posted 16 July 2014 Leicestershire Police has arrested nine alleged paedophiles as part of an “unprecedented†nationwide operation to track down people who trade in indecent images of children. The force announced this morning that it had arrested the nine men as part of Operation Notarise, which was led by the National Crime Agency, (NCA). The NCA said 660 people have been arrested by forces across the country throughout the six month operation. They included people who had unsupervised access to children in the course of their work, including doctors, teachers, scout leaders, care workers and former police officers. Leicestershire Police arrested the nine suspects over the past six months after the NCA handed over their details in April and May. A further five people’s computers have been seized and are now being analysed for illegal content. The suspects have been released on bail while officers continue their investigation. None has been charged with any offences. However, police have imposed bail conditions on them to ensure they have no contact with children. It believes the measure has “safeguarded†38 children who might have come into contact with the men. In some of those cases the force has contacted the children’s parents to notify them of their suspicions. Chief Superintendent Stu Prior, head of crime for Leicestershire Police, said: “This operation is just one part of our work to protect children from abuse. “It represents about a fifth of our current workload of investigations into the possession or distribution of indecent images. “Paedophiles and those interested in extreme pornography need to know that the internet is not a safe place for them. “They will leave a digital trail which we and our partners can follow. “We are unable to disclose the tactics used in this operation, as we will be using it again in future work.†The national operation targeted people suspected of using the internet to gain access to indecent images of children. The NCA said it believed more than 400 children across the UK have been protected from harm as a result of the arrests. Some 39 of the 660 arrested people were registered sex offenders, while most were unknown to police, the NCA said. Phil Gormley deputy director of the agency, said: “This is the first time the UK has had the capability to coordinate a single targeted operation of this nature. “Over the past six months we have seen unprecedented levels of cooperation to deliver this result. “Our aim was to protect children who were victims of, or might be at risk of, sexual exploitation. “A child is victimised not only when they are abused and an image is taken. They are re-victimised every time that image is viewed by someone. “Some of the people who start by accessing indecent images online go on to abuse children directly. “So the operation is not only about catching people who have already offended – it is about influencing potential offenders before they cross that line “We want those offenders to know that the internet is not a safe anonymous space for accessing indecent images, that they leave a digital footprint, and that law enforcement will find itâ€. Anyone convicted of possessing indecent images faces a maximum sentence of five years. Anyone convicted of offences involving making, taking or distributing indecent images faces up to ten years in jail.
