Euro 2016 Qualifying

Make no mistake, Police Scotland are going to apply very heavy control next month.

I remember last time England came to Glasgow. It was awful. I came out of work in the city centre and they were fighting in the street outside Central Station.

The law won't underestimate the potential for trouble this time.

Given the referendum, there's potential for zoomers from up here ("the 45", sigh) wanting it to kick off, too, for political purposes.

Much as I usually relish a competition on the field between the sides (it''ll never mean more than 1996, though), I hate the idea that any trouble around the forthcoming game has the potential to sour relationships between the country of my birth and the place I call home.

I'd just rather it wasn't happening right now.

A draw would have been a fair result.

Both teams lacked quality in the final third.

Quaresma came up with a bit of quality and Ronaldo put it away.

Why the hate for Ronaldo? It's Nani who I hate, the useless cvnt.

Because he's bigged up as much as he is, yet he was kept quiet by some distinctly average players by public standards. Granted, I'm not positively inclined because of his on-field persona which I don't like. Nani isn't any better, but he isn't as good either.

Ivan is supposedly banned from all fixtures after Italy away.

Imagine being banned from your national team's fixtures but having the gall to stroll out onto the pitch while a riot is occurring lol

I guess it doesn't take much gall when the authorities/police/stewards allow you to.

Think it still takes some personally.

Going to be hell for the English fans going to Scotland, not going to be able to have a booze before the game and I doubt you will the day before.

Glasgow is a dangerous place.

I wrote a right long reply out to this that got lost online. \but the gist of it was there used to be 25k england fans members not 6-7 years ago and there was no trouble then really.  Now theres 7k ish apparentley. To be in the members club you cant have so much as a police caution. We're collecting tickets once there after showing ID so cant imagine many undesirables getting to the game. Certainly for those who have tickets though itll definitely be a 'keep your head down' trip

Reports emerging of the penalties imposed for the Serbia v Albania debacle....

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/oct/24/serbia-albania-euro-2016-uefa-sanctions

- Serbia awarded a 3-0 win for Albania refusing to continue the match (Albania set to appeal, understandably)

- Serbia deducted 3 points (for lack of crowd control, presumably)

- Serbia also ordered to play next 2 matches behind closed doors

- Both countries fined

All could benefit Denmark and Portugal in the group, ultimately....

Serbia win, but are deducted 3 points. So they come out of it with 0?

It's a weird one, but I guess they still have +3 to add to their goal difference, which possibly could be a decisive factor.

Haha! Unbelievable, players being attacked on the pitch by fans so refuse to continue playing. So they lose the game. Incredible decision.

But the incident was started by Albanians.

It's pretty fair. Neither get points, Albania lose a bit of goal difference but Serbia have to play behind closed doors.

If by "started" you mean the Albanians running at the Serbs who were trying to remove the banner, grabbing etc, you have a point.

If you mean sending the drone-controlled banner on in the first place, they have yet to identify who did that, haven't they?

The probability is that it was some Albanian fan, even though their fans were banned from the match, but I suppose in theory it could have been a Serb seeking to provoke a confrontation....unlikely, but possible.

They originally thought it was the Albanian PM's brother, didn't they? Surprised they've not managed to identify the culprit. If it wasn't an Albanian VIP, presumably the suggestion is that it was an Albanian fan in Belgrade but outside the stadium (or inside the stadium incognito, but that would take insanity, not just balls!).

I suppose it's a simple way to give neither side points and not have the hassle of trying to shoehorn a replay of the fixture into the schedule. It just seems odd that the Albanian team/FA are punished for the actions of Serbia's fans.

Serbia need a ban from football, the national team or their club teams seem to be in some form of trouble on a constant basis.

Again, it was started by Albanian fans taunting the Serbians even though they'd been banned from attending.

I'm no fan of Serbia's support but they were provoked in a particularly inflammatory way.

Give the three points for Albanian fans provoking the Serbian fans then. Holding the players accountable for the situation seems wrong to me. It's all semantics anyway I suppose as the outcome is just, I just don't like the way the end result was achieved.

If we want to argue about who started what, we can look at the build-up to the game and the actions of the Serbian fans up until the drone incident.

The bottom line is that the Serbian FA failed to control their fans.

People just want to blame Serbia for everything don't they?

Someone connected to Albania clearly started the whole thing flying an offensive flag, the Albanian players on the pitch then started the mass brawl because a Serb player politely pulled the drone down and then to finish off they even refused to finish the game even when told it would be behind closed doors.

Personal opinion and given the circumstance I thought the Serbian security did a cracking job of controlling the crowd considering what could have happened.

To say the Serbian authorities controlled their fans admirably must an awful wind-up. And there's no way the stadium was safe enough afterward for either the players, the fans, or the police, or that the players were focused enough to continue.

I'll say it again: what was going on on the pitch was hardly any royal rumble until the Serbian fans got out on the pitch. And by the end of it, the two sides had stopped fighting and the Serbian players were even protecting their opponents from the fans.

The Serbian fans were behaving so poorly up until that point--bad enough that they could have gotten their FA slapped with penalties even without the post-drone nonsense. But now we have to excuse everything because they were "offended" by a flag.

Serbian fans invaded the pitch and assaulted Albanian players, which is more than enough justification for Serbia to forfeit that game, so I think this ruling is a disgrace. And if known hooligan provocateurs with criminal records can brazenly cause trouble in Serbia during a Euro qualifier, then UEFA can have no confidence that Serbia will "control" their fans in the near future.

I would feel bad for the Serbian players (who by and large kept cool heads and were disgusted by their fans' behavior) if any penalties hurt them, but I would shed no tears for Serbian fans and the Serbian FA.

I did wonder why the Albanian lad went and grabbed the flag. Shame people can't just get on with the game for 90 minutes, go and have a scrap in a field away from people and the match if you can't just watch the game.
