Wenger: "I wouldn't have signed Welbeck if I had been in the UK"

Not sure if he has been misquoted (haven't seen the actual press conference footage), but if true, how very odd.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he would not have signed striker Danny Welbeck on transfer deadline day had he been in the country.

The 23-year-old left boyhood club Manchester United in a £16m switch to the Gunners while Wenger was away in Rome for a charity game.

Wenger said: "If I'd stayed at home he wouldn't be here now."

He refused to elaborate on that but added he initially wanted Welbeck on loan with an option to buy.

Really do think he's losing it.

He's not nearly the man he was a decade ago and it's a shame really because he's one of the best managers the Premier League has seen.

The question must be asked  that is " why wasnt he at his club managing the ins and outs on transfer deadline day?"

Because Refereeing a charity game in Rome on Deadline Day is so much more important, keep up..

Watched a couple of videos the other day of Arsenal from 10/15 years ago. Unbelievable really. The team was ridiculously brilliant and talented... The forward line of Pires, Bergkamp, Henry with the likes of Viera sat behind. Still the best I've ever seen live I think.

Why wasn't he there and why were people going over his head making transfers? Could be a sign that the board have lost faith in him. Everyone knew they needed a striker, except the manager, so it looks like they went over his head and got one anyway. Could be the beginning of the end for him. Strange thing to come out with whatever the case.

Good point.

Wouldn't surprise me if Wenger has come out with this just to have a dig at the board.

In all seriousness I think Welbz will be a good signing for Arsenal.

He's not good enough tactically to win the league again. Arsenal will have to replace him sooner rather than later because he's not the manager he was, it'll be a shame because he's the second best manager the premier league has seen.

Seems to me that he sanctioned Welbeck on loan with a view to permanent. Man Utd possibly said no to the loan and wanted a straight transfer. The board/whoever was authorising the transfer then just went ahead and sorted the permanent transfer.

If he can get a run of games upfront and get himself a bit of composure in dangerous positions England could have a real dangerous strike force on their hands in Sturridge and Welbeck. I never though i'd be saying that 3 seasons ago!

Maybe he wanted him on loan only and Man Utd wanted to sell.

Maybe he thought he could get Welbeck on the cheap at some point in the future (anyone know when his contract at Man U was due to expire?)

Maybe he knew the asking price so in his mind, they would never sign Welbeck.

Strange deal. If the board did go over his head and agree the signing, arent they paying too much for a player that doesnt score frequently and will probably be used as a wide forward rather than an out and out striker?

I find it hard to believe he said that.

Probably let slip somewhere he'd have preferred a loan deal and the press have twisted it.

They have twisted it, indeed.

Via The Telegraph:

Wenger had not expected to sign Welbeck until early on deadline day and had initially only thought it would be on loan with the option of a permanent deal.

“I thought when they bought Falcao they had to let somebody go,” said Wenger. “I was not aware of the start that he would be available, it was quick, but I had no hesitation to do it.”

Welbeck signed a five year permanent deal and, asked if he would initially have preferred a loan, Wenger said: “With an option to buy yes. In the end, when it was a permanent transfer or loan with an option to buy, I was happy to buy permanently."

Asked to clarify if that meant he favoured a loan, Wenger added: "At start of day, he was only available on loan. At the end of the day, I agreed.”

Of deadline day – and the criticism of his trip to Rome – “Wenger said: “If I had not travelled that day, Welbeck would not be here. The coincidence made it. If I stayed in my home, Welbeck would not be here. I will tell you that story one day. That is the truth. We are in 2014, you can always be in touch.”

When he was pressed on what he meant, Wenger added: “The advantage of that day was I got up at 6am and was available the whole day.”

It seems like Wenger is hinting that had he stayed home, he would not have been awake at 6 am, but being awake so early gave him a head start on transfer business and/or the opportunity to get information about transfers before any rival clubs.

This is a man who spent £10m on Wiltord.

Wasn't it Wiltord who scored a winner at Old Trafford that practically sealed a title? Worth £10m alone.

And signed shortly after scoring the winning goal in a European Championship Final..
