I go to a boardgaming night every Wednesday at the La Vida restaurant (upstairs) on Northampton Street. We play a varied games including Catan Dominion Pandamic and Magic games.. New members are welcome. The restaurant also do decent pizzas and pastas. You just need to pay £1 towards new games and the first week is free.

I always try and play games I have not played before. One Camelot involves different characters based around King Arthur and one is a saboteur who tries to make a quest fail. A few are deck building games like Dominion.Pandamic is crazy.

I think they are Section 31 and have a facebook page. I will double check.

Yeah, played Camelot - it's very difficult to beat the saboteur.

Have played a lot of board games throughout the years. It's a bit on and off now. Gets tough gathering friends and family alike for an evening of gaming, sadly.

Great games I would play again any day include:

  • Junta (Such a devious and fun game)
  • Pandemic (+ expansions, excellent coop game that's a bit Scotland Yard-ish)
  • Settlers (+ expansions, classic and a must have in any BG afficionados home)
  • Game of Thrones (even if it's unbalanced when played < 6 players)
  • Revolution! (Superb short-ish games that's all about double-bluffing)
  • Carcassonne (So simple yet ultimately quite challenging)
  • Space Alert (Brilliant little coop game that has innovative gaming features. Exhilirating and challenging stuff!)
  • Smallworld (Very cool game with superb replayability + expansions)
  • Tammany Hall (Again, simple setup, very complex at the end. I still don't think I've played a game without making a pretty grave error along the way)
  • Risk Legacy (You like Risk, but think it lacks depth? You should go for this! A board game that you and your friends literally shape over 15 games before it's fully developed)

And many more, that I will probably list along the way...

When i lived in Singapore i loved playing board games, they have have these cafe's where you rent a booth by the hour and you can pick any of there 100s of board games to play, also bring food and drink to your table. it was great fun :)

I'm guessing hand jobs came free with the hour booth rental, sounds seedy.

I  have probably met her.

Played Smallworld and Seven Wonders and one where you have to escape an island that's being flooded.

A good party one is werewolf. One narrator a werewolf and villagers. The narrator tells the story with the villages sleeping (shut eyes) and one villager is killed by pointing at them (werewolf eyes are open) then the villagers pick one to be hung until they get the right one or there is just the werewolf left.

It's a good night and friendly people.Never realised there were so many expansions and varieties to these games.Muchkin has a few different types.

If anyone wants to come along it starts anytime after 6pm.

Just thought of another. Escape from  Tokyo with monsters.

Used to play a pirate game called Buccaneer. No VHS tape though just pieces representing diamonds and rubys. May still have it but with pieces missing. Got one called Escape From Colditz.

There's a Game Of Thrones board game??

There is! It's a political/war game where you play one of the great houses. It's in the same vein as risk but less luck-based, definitely one of my favourites. It's 3-6 players but it is quite a long one, probably looking at 2-5 hours depending on how many players and turns you get through.

Use to play this when I was a kid, not sure we used to play it properly though...

Heroquest_GameSet-board-game-complete-co

You want to look at Descent: journeys in the dark 2nd edition. It's an awesome dungeon crawler. Like hero quest but updated and more polished

I'm really surprised so many on here are into 'niche' board games. I didn't think the two demographics of football fan and board gamers would mix.

I've been steadily building up my collection:

Ticket to ride

Smallworld

Descent

Settlers of Catan

Suburbia

Pandemic

Forbidden desert

Coup

The resistance

Machi koro

Jaipur

Space hulk

Anyone mad for Star Wars like me? If so if you've not heard of or seen x wing miniatures then look it up! It's an awesome dogfighting game.

Also for really good and entertaining reviews check out:

7 Wonders is a genius game for the way you can get 7 people playing simultaneously without much downtime between turns. I don't actually own that, it's my bro-in-laws, but I bought him the wonders mini expansion and we like to play that fairly often.

But if I have to talk about one or two games that we play the most... Ticket To Ride and Dominion. Between myself and my other bro-in-law (I have 6) we have all the games, maps and expansions.

How about co-op games Haydos? Actually, isn't Dead of Winter co-op? Recently bought Jamaica which I like and have you tried Formula De? Seem to remember seeing you post in the F1 thread.

Before I go on I'd recomment Shut up and Sit down as a review news site, the guys on there are really enthusiastic and have got us playing a fair few.

We're due to play 7 Wonders this week some time, I haven't played it for about a year but I remember it working really well first time round and it has great mechanics. We actually played Race For The Galaxy last night which I'd also recomment. Really simple, good fun and played through in about 1.5 hours with 4 players.

I'm trying to get a couple of different games that fit different niches. Love Letter and Carc are two really simple ones I enjoy.

Dead of Winter is 'semi-co-op' I think. You can play it completely co-op where there is no deserter/traitor but it makes it slightly easier and depending on your preferences It can be just as fun. With the deserter card in play there's a certain chance someone in the group will be dealt it at the start but nobody knows whether it's in play of not....So to win you first of all have to fulfill the group objective and then your own personal objective whether you happen to be good or bad. The deserter objective will tend to sabotauge the group and the 'good' objectives will be things like have a certain amount of food in your hand at the end or have a certain amount of people at the base.

Very good game that I'd suggest watching a review (I think there's one on SU&SD) for. It think it's out of print for now due to all the pre-orders going straight away but you can pre-order for the next run which is due soon.

I've not played a Formula 1 game, no, I'm a bit on and off with Formula 1 in general anyway. In terms of other co-ops...I've played Pandemic once and that was good fun. A lot of these I've only played once so I'd like to go through them a bit more but we keep playing new ones.

If you want to get kids involved there's a light one called 'Escape From The Temple' I think. You listen to a CD and a game lasts about 15 minutes. You follow certain cues and timers on the audio track whilst frantically rolling dice over and over to try and get certain combos so you can move around and collect things. At certain points you need to get to safe areas and by the end you need to escape with your treasure. We're all in our 20's and it was still a good laugh going for things and trying to communicate what you're all going to do without knowing how long the timer has left.

Risk can be enjoyable but long nevertheless.

Monopoly is a favourite but only very occasionally. Love a game of Articulate, too.

Why not Scrabble :( ?

Articulate is an amazing drunk game. Me and a few mates have a bit of a weird sense of humour/way of communicating but we're all on the same wavelength so it works and just gets more hilarious the more you drink.

Nothing against scrabble, was just trying to aim it at the games you won't see on the shelves as WH Smith because there's a load of amazing games out there but most people rarely get further than Monopoly which is a shame.

Another /r/boardgames frequenter!

How have you found Suburbia? I'm looking at getting that or Keyflower at the moment. The SUSD review on hex-laying games sold both of them for me but I'm not sure which to order first.

Ok maybe not the Savile game.

Risk was always quality, and I've got fond memories of playing Snoopy Come Home, as a young child at my Grandparents. Ahhhh Nostalgia.
